@@ichigo19870 Tesla's system is only Level 2, which means constant monitoring is required. You have to agree to a disclosure every time you enable FSD for your driver profile. Mercedes claims Level 3, which means you can take your eyes off the road (interstates only). That's absolutely crazy to me, especially after seeing how poorly the Mercedes system performs. Quite contrary to what you said, I think it's the Mercedes system that will result in more deaths. I'm sorry if you got hurt by overzealous Musk promises 7 years ago, but that doesn't mean that Tesla Corporation claims FSD is autonomous. They don't claim that at all. Mercedes-Benz Drive Assist (Distronic): in this video - Functionality: Drive Assist is a hands-on system that provides excellent lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control. - Autonomy Level: It operates at Level 2, which means the driver must keep their hands on the wheel and remain ready to take control instantly. - Coverage: Drive Assist works on freeways, but only on those that are mapped and approved. - Annual Cost: There is no additional annual cost for Drive Assist. Mercedes-Benz Drive Pilot: this is what should be compared to Tesla FSD - Functionality: Drive Pilot offers a taste of autonomous driving, but with limited functionality. - Autonomy Level: It falls somewhere between Level 2 and Level 3. While it allows hands-free driving, the driver must still be able to take over when requested. - Coverage: Drive Pilot is currently legally allowed only in California and Nevada. - Annual Cost: Drive Pilot comes with a high annual cost of $2,500

Just want to point out (this was pointed out to me) that this Mercedes EQS is *not* equipped with the Level 3 autonomy system. Mercedes vehicles with that system have two dedicated buttons on the upper half of the steering wheel from where the system is activated. On this video there are no such buttons and the autonomous system is activated via central hub of the wheel. This means this system on Mercedes is more comparable to non-FSD autopilot, not to FSD. That being said, my 5+ years old Model 3 with AP2.5 hardware and old software stack does MUCH better job driving autonomously than this Mercedes. I would be extremely intrigued to see a one more drive with the Mercedes Level 3 system on this very same drive.

They *were* the first to have a Level 3 system. But as the SAE document that defines the various levels states, "While numbered sequentially 0 through 5, the levels of driving automation do not specify or imply hierarchy in terms of relative merit, technology sophistication, or order of deployment. Thus, this taxonomy does not specify or imply that, for example, Level 3 is “better” than Level 2." As an example, Tesla's Level 2 FSD (Supervised) system is far, far better than MB's Level 3 Drive Pilot in almost every category. The main difference between Level 2 and Level 3 is that in Level 2, the driver must be able to take over immediately when requested; while in Level 3, the takeover can be delayed-for instance MB Drive Pilot allows 10 seconds for the driver to take over. This is trivially easy when all vehicles are moving in the same direction at

Few things to note: 1) Tesla had 0 interventions 2) Tesla has the ability to perform both right and left turns (protected and unprotected) 3) Tesla was able to navigate itself without any lane markings required. 4) Tesla has the ability to stop at traffic light, stop at stop signs (including properly yielding to prior vehicles stopped at stop signs) 5) Tesla has the ability to anticipate pedestrian intention 6) OH! and did I mention, Tesla processes this all now via Neural Net. Now, the question is.... How on Earth did Mercedes a) get approval to call their systems a Level 3 (L3) and b) which agency allowed Mercedes to advertise this? All these other companies, including BlueCruise, are claiming "HandsFree" driving whereas in the real-world Tesla's system is an order of magnitude more advanced than any competitor. Also, thank you for your post, editing, and your dad's input. Edit: I understand that Mercedes had once stated that the L3 is only applicable when on highway and 40km/h or slower. @@ichigo19870 I’m pretty sure those whom replied under this specific thread of conversation know this. My issue, imo, is with MB allowing media to run with the L3 label; it’s extremely misleading and irresponsible. Let’s say Omar had only used basic Autopilot vs MB’s system, it’s still evident that Mercedes still couldn’t keep within its lane - from drifting to wrong lane selections. Autopilot can achieve this as FSD simply unlocks the extra features mentioned in my previous post. Anyways, the real test will come with v12.4 when, according to Elon, the nag feature will be removed. Then in this case, Tesla can drive at highway speed limit with no interaction (including hands on wheel), whilst MB drivers can have this feature only going 40 mp/h or less on highway as long as conditions are favorable. I thought the same thing. But if they did it is misleading for them to compare current Mercedes software with enhanced autopilot which is not current Tesla software (FSD supervised is). But, even so, I had enhanced autopilot before I got accepted into the FSD beta program in the first tranche 3 years ago, and at that time it was more capable on a drive like this than what I’m seeing the Mercedes doing in this video.

Just confirming Omar, that this Mercedes car is not a Level 3 equipped EQS Sedan? So would a more fair comparison be Tesla Autopilot vs the Mercedes Driver assist? I just did 500km driving in my Tesla Model 3 2021 with the legacy Autopilot software stack (FSD is paid for on my car but not available here in Australia yet), and I had several disengagements with trouble lane changing and over taking trucks on the highway. I do also acknowledge that Tesla FSD you can enable anywhere (almost) and it will perform really well, while Mercedes Drive Pilot L3 can only be enabled on certain roads with very constrained variables (daytime, no rain, lead car, etc.

This is not a L3 equipped Mercedes. L3 Drive Pilot cars have two extra buttons on the steering wheel and blue indicator lights that turn on when Drive Pilot is available. Unfortunately a completely pointless comparison. Besides that: the Mercedes L3 system is approved and drivers are actually allowed to do something else while it‘s active. In a Tesla, the driver always is in charge. No matter what Tesla tells you: if you crash, it‘s your responsibility.

I think a big thing to consider as well is the time of day that's being used between the two devices. My vehicle has some lane assist technology, and it does best during the middle of the day, when the Mercedes is driving. My lane centering system struggles when driving directly into sunsets, which the Tesla is actually doing the entire time. So the Tesla theoretically should be working harder due to poor lighting conditions, and lens flare caused by direct sunlight.
