You bought your first Tesla, now you need to figure out your home charging options. In this video, we'll do a home charging speed comparison between a 15 amp circuit and a 50 amp circuit. Now obviously the 50 amp circuit is going to charge your Tesla Model 3 in less time, but how much faster is it? Maybe the better question is do you need to pay an electrician upwards of $1000 to have a new 50 amp circuit installed, or can you live with the standard 15 amp outlet you already have in your garage?
There are a variety of home charging options for your Tesla. You can go with the standard NEMA 5-15 outlet that most everyone has in their home, or you can upgrade to a NEMA 14-50 outlet. While both will work, what you need really depends on your driving habits, and that will determine if charging speed and time really matters.

Wife and I encountered just this situation when we transitioned from an ICE/ICE to a EV/ICE and finally to an EV/EV household. One NEMA 14-50 on a 40amp circuit was plenty to keep the EV charged regardless of how much we used it during the day because within a few hours, it would regain all that energy back. Then we added a second EV. When the second EV came along, we had an electrician wire in a second NEMA 14-50 and both cars are happy. Super easy to "gas up" the cars from home anytime.

That's the way to do it. I'll be honest, in our situation I haven't run into any problems using the 15 amp circuit for most of my charging needs, but it's nice to have that 50 amp when needed.

I have the rwd model 3 also. My commute is about 30 miles a day total so I could probably get away with the standard 15 amp plug. I found that instead of range anxiety I was having charging anxiety as I would essentially always need to have it charging when home. I very much recommend upgrading to a 50amp line if you are able, you will have a ton more flexibility and won't really have to worry about your state of charge. Save your receipt from the electrician, this is a capital improvement on your home

Luckily we have both, so I don't have to worry about that charging anxiety. Agree with your point, if you can afford it, that's the way to go. Didn't think about the capital improvement, I need to look into that.

really great perspective once again! maybe its easier to think of it is way . if driving more than 10 km a day then its worth getting one. and the 50 amp is more reliable than going to superchargers most of the time

I've found that if I drive 45 miles, which I think is roughly 70 km, I could live off the 15 amp circuit. That drive uses around 17% of my battery, and will typically recharge in under 12 hours.

I've had a BMW i3 for 5 years. I have a 32 Amp charger and the factory 110Volt 16 AMP charger. I do 95% of my charging on the 16 AMP charger for a couple of reasons. The BMW can't be set to stop at a certain percent. It will always go to 100% unless you stop it manually. The 32 AMP would always hit 100% overnight so I just use the 16 AMP and in the morning usually find the charge between 50 and 80%. Plenty for my commute. in addition, I think this slower charging is better for the battery. My 32 AMP charger has spent more time charging Teslas from visiting friends than it has my car. BTW, my garage shares a wall with my kitchen so my 32 AMP charger shares a circuit with my oven. I installed it myself. In theory I should not use the oven and the charger at the same time, but this has never been a problem.

I probably do 90% of my charging off the 15 amp circuit, but it's nice to have that 50 amp as a backup. Just takes a bit of planning if my wife is also charging, I just switch them up before going to bed.

Lmao. People. I went to home Depot. Bought 300$ worth of shit ran my own having never done it before for a 50amp. Easy.

Wonder how a 20-a circuit would affect things. Many garage outlets are fed with #12 wire allowing for a 20a outlet. Swap out the mobile charger pigtail for a 20a and you’ve got an inexpensive upgrade to 110/115 v charging (although minimal?). 3:14

I've wondered that as well. Need to see what kind of wire I've got running and determine if that's even an option.

I've got the LFP battery in my Model 3, and that battery chemistry likes to be charged to 100%.

Different type of battery chemistry. Your Model Y has a Lithium Ion (NCA/NCM) battery while my Model 3 has a Lithium Ion (LFP). This difference is why my battery likes to be charged to 100% vs the 80% - 90% for your battery.

@@mywifestesla wow thanks. But why do they have different batteries? Is the model y have the newer battery tech

@@walterwhite1 The LFP type in the standard trim is made by the Chinese company whereas the battery in the long range is made by Panasonic (although they were assembled by the Chinese company as well) The battery in the performance trim is made by tesla in USA
