I never thought about the amount of engineering goes into a "simple" vehicle.... All of the crash allowances, human conveniences, sound deadening... To be an engineer to design and build cars is a MASSIVE undertaking... That they are able to design and build a car in a matter of years is amazing to me... Thank you Sandy and team for putting these videos out there to help the every day man understand more of what it takes and think differently when building...

Video went on a little bit longer! Win win. Jordan and Kevin your insight to my Model S just brilliant. When I say my model S my current 2014 125,000 uk miles owned from new P85. I engineered in big auto world wide 44 years so got to see a number body in white and pretty much have had most interior/cover panels off my car, I was just interested. As you say there was a good deal of legacy auto in the early S. A good deal of water leaks too, California dont do rain! I specified the no sunroof just black roof option on my white P85, didnt want the C of G to go up carrying glass and mechanisms and cant say seeing the UK grey sky whilst listening to whistling wind and suffering leaks was appealing, plus my cream interior meany they would put in cream Alcantera roof lining, stilll looks so good. Never driven another S that does not have a sun roof but I and others who have driven my car say my car turns in sweetly, my guess is the lower CofG. Anyways still suffered slight leak in the left rear corner of the non sunroof. I took off the rear interior hatch pannels slit a piece of pipe fitted in over the flanged edges of the internals of the roof and a pipe out the boot floor, worked! It was only ever leaking in a cup of water but didnt want my Alcantera staining. The other leak/s was the blowouts / flow through vents in the sides of the boot floor letting in water from the rear lamp gutters, some siliconed on plastic diverters solved that. I can see the improvements in the new body compared to mine and Ive a Plaid on order as well as a Roadster.......still a massive Tesla Fan. What will I do with my P85..................Pick up conversion?

Apologies if this was explained elsewhere, but something that has been really troubling me is the thought of an accident with the new casting in the model Y. It’s great for accidents that are severe because the occupants will be protected. In smaller collisions will the car be totaled at a lower threshold because of the casting? If it will be totaled, will this likely increase insurance prices? Also will it just take an extremely long time to get your vehicle repaired because you have to reassemble the car with the new casting?
@imconsequetau5275
@imconsequetau5275 2 жыл бұрын
In "minor" front accidents only the front section of the rectangular tubes will crush. These can be cut-off and replaced. The back ends of these tubes are wrapped with additional metal so that area stays intact longer unless more energy must be absorbed. Still, I think even if the complex areas of the castings are still intact, the vehicle may be a write-off due to the large number of other damaged components: fenders, hood, auxiliary systems, radiator, octo-valve, steering, suspension, etc.

3:35. Structural adhesive. I’ve been speculating that the Cybertruck is basically 2 or 3 mega castings (front casting, passenger compartment casting or stamped/welded steel, and rear casting) bolted together, and that the ‘exoskeleton’ stainless steel panels will be glued to these castings. So it was nice to hear of the strength of adhesive in an automotive application.

Back in the 1990s, the German motorcycle manufacturer MZ commissioned a British designer. He used three aluminium castings for steering and rear suspension mount joined with aluminium tubes bonded into the castings. The company welded the joints because they refused to believe the adhesive could do the job. They failed on costs but worse the welds caused the tubes to mis-align. Some welds cracked in use causing warranty problems. The company refused to consider new technology and went broke as a result.

I would realy like to know what will be provided for the autobody people specifically if you get into a front corner accident will they have full precast partitions to cut out the damaged section and weld in all new sections . My thinking is I can't stand the thought of writing off a fender bender and offering aftermarket parts that a good body man with a tig can fix to new specs.

everyone keeps talking about the front and rear castings... casting casting casting... but the thing is that tesla's casting machines also induce extreme pressure to the molten metal... to me this is a grey area between casting and forging and if I had to bet, id bet that the metallurgic properties are kind of mixed.... the benefits of forgings are achieved ill bet(granted its speculation) but the casting benefits are the shape of the casting/forging.... i think its genius, and as far as slip... im not an engineer(im NDT) but i think in some respects zero slip at connection point "A" leads to zero slip at "Z" but if i had to guess a ten thousandths of slip at "A" leads to upwards of .125" slip at "M"? "R"?"Z'? they add up and angular misalignment only gets worse over time right(time distance) if you were called out i would resort to the idea that the manufacturing plant is the product and the "PRODUCT" IS ALWAYS ITERATING!!!!

Yet another content rich video from Monroe. You don't have to be an engineer to enjoy these but if you do enjoy them, it is because you are intellectually curious. I find myself looking forward to these VLOGS and they almost never dissapoint. Great work Team Monroe and keep em coming.
