Tesla Model Y Delivery Checklist

Wondering what to look for during your delivery of the Tesla Model Y? This is an overview of some of the items that it would make sense to check out during your delivery appointment. Based on my experience and the experiences of others, I have compiled some of the bigger items that you will want to make sure you check out.
There are likely to be issues on your Tesla Model Y when you go to pick it up. Just make sure you take the time to get the issues documented so that they can be addressed by Tesla. Tesla has historically been good about addressing issues after delivery, although, if you don't document the problem during delivery, it is not a sure bet. Take the time to review and document those issues now.

When I took delivery of my Model 3, it was a cloudy day and they showed it to me in the garage. I didn’t see a tiny missing place of paint on the edge of the frunk lid. Also the steering wheel was a little crooked when going straight down the road. I live 2 hours from the Charlotte Service center so I figured I’d bring it up when I was in the area again in a month. They didn’t want to cover the alignment needed to straighten the steering wheel but ended up doing it under “goodwill”. So pull the car out of delivery bay into sunshine when inspecting and don’t be afraid to drive right back if the alignment isn’t right. Better to deal with on delivery day than fight later.

100%. This is what I keep preaching about the delivery process. Make sure you bring it up during delivery. You won’t catch everything, but do your best or they’ll try to avoid fixing it.

I have now had my new Tesla a month and am thoroughly enjoying it. This is my first Tesla. The delivery process was great and I had reviewed the videos several times over the past few months. The videos were extremely helpful and I felt anxious but comfortable as I drove it off the lot. I have gotten use to driving and it was somewhat easy as it is a lot like my golf cart. I did report a few issues with panel alignment which I self identified. I did have a service visit and it went very well. Thanks for the checklist which I used at delivery as it was very helpful. I also sit in it and learn things about what’s available. I am a little bit of a “techie” and like to explore. I finally tried summon in an empty parking lot and ready to try self driving.

Picked up our Model Y today VIN 56XXX at Fremont site and went through entire checklist and more. Thanks. The result - few issues and pics shared via Tesla app - a) slightly raised right headlight and taillight, b) gap/alignment on right rear window, and detached plastic trim inside door next to seatbelt. All the rest of the items on the checklist were great.

This video freaks me out a little bit! I take delivery in 5 days. This video makes it sound like these cars are built by complete amateurs. Are these all actual issues that people are reporting or is this just a comprehensive list? Battery day will be exciting news, but whatever new tech is announced, it will not impact model 3 or Y. At least not for a couple years. If they have a new mega battery, it’ll go in the S and X first. With Tesla, if you wait for each new breakthrough to order, you’ll never order a car because they are always improving. 1.) Just picked up my Model Y AWD yesterday 5/27 from Buena Park CA. We were told pre-delivery issues needed to be reported within 5 days/100 miles whichever comes first. Unfortunately, by the time we got home after picking up family we returned home at 171 miles. We have the same fitment issues with the taillights. I would add listen to all of the speakers to make sure sound comes out and does not crackle. My coolant pump (heat pump) is pretty noisy but not sure if that is normal or not. It is much louder than I thought it would be.

Don’t worry, there are things that are obviously manufacturing defect. Things like paint chips and wear are going to be hard after the fact, but misaligned panels are not something that happens over time.

Yes of course, but with white, it’s hard to see them. The biggest one was mismatch paint on panned vs bumpers.

If you are a stickler for these types of things, with the sticker price, we all should be, I would probably hold off. I can live with the mess of getting this stuff fixed to have the car but many wouldn't. The Model 3 had many similar issues at launch and they cleaned them up over time. May be a good strategy to wait until they have addressed these issues at the plant.

Tesla's big problem at the moment is not their designs, which in some ways are brilliant, but quality control which is non-existent. The paint job on Model Ys is simply appalling, would be a disgrace on a car costing $16,000 let alone $60,000. The paint is too thin - 4ml instead of 10; some areas are bare; there is dirt in the paint; crude attempts to clean this up leave buff marks everywhere. Panels and trim are incorrectly fitted. Hatches don't open properly. Windows don't work. The frunk latch shows errors. Rear seats are not level and squeak. There are rattles everywhere. Owners vent their frustration on KZbin - three service visits in a couple of months with issues unresolved. I want their full self driving to help with frequent 300 mile trips, but I'm not sure I could cope with the consequences. I've been a Toyota owner for almost 40 years. I visit a garage once a decade for the few things I don't want to deal with. The rest of the servicing I do myself. Now if Toyota would just licence FSD and put it on a RAV4 Prime...

Gotta thank you for this list. Went to take delivery today, after Tesla had already postponed it last week due to a “fender issue” that was bad enough that they flat out stated they couldn’t let me take delivery but they would fix it... only to find today that there was still a 6 inch scrape on the front fender (not sure what they fixed, if anything), wipers did not work at all, one of the rear seat warmers didn’t work, a coat hanger didn’t close, tow hook was missing, and out of the 100+ teslas at the site, ours was the only one missing a front hood emblem. So we ended up unaccepting delivery and requested a new car. There were just too many issues that we did not feel comfortable with that particular car. Without this video, I would never have thought to check any of this stuff before driving off. I can only hope we have much better luck with the next one, otherwise I’ve got a garage full of accessories that I may have to get rid of...thanks again

I’m trying to wrap my head around why someone would want to purchase a Tesla with sooooo many potential or actual issues. I’m a loyal Lexus purchaser and have NEVER received a new car with issues like these. Furthermore, although Tesla is VERY expensive, the quality of materials seem rather cheap. Help me understand where the value is for the price.

well, there is nothing wrong with your position. Keep buying gas Lexus cars. I would not consider the finishes in the car cheap. Most surfaces are nice soft touch finishes. You are paying for a large battery and motor system that no other manufacturer is even close to releasing. Keep in mind too with an electric car, the operating costs are significantly lower than gas counterparts.

Electricity is cheaper than gas, and overall the EV is going to be more reliable. If you could count all of the moving parts in your car versus the Tesla, it's a no brainer. Then we already have a pretty nice charging network only Tesla can use. We can also use the other EV charging stations too, and there are more than you think already. Number 1 market is China. Europe already has laws which phased out gas cars. Any automaker who wants to sell internationally can't ignore this. I could go on and on. We get automatic updates almost every 3 weeks. These make your car better than the day you bought it. You can't say that without doing some major hardware upgrades with labor cost. My performance model can defeat most any car except for something that has to cost about $200K or more. The FSD is an autonomous driving program that improves, but the car itself is ready to handle this. Once that happens, the price on the car will appreciate...rightfully so. Then with Tesla becoming a Virtual Pwer plant, your car can make money 2 ways. On your property giving power to the grid, or to be used as a robotaxi. Like I said. I can go on and on. Tesla has changed the game.

I would say the technology and future thinking of the Tesla Ecosystem is so difficult to explain in a comment or even an in-person conversation but once you understand it, this spaceship-like-futuristic vehicle will blow your mind. Yes, there may be some minor build quality issues but the incredible experience of every other part of this vehicle is absolutely mind blowing and will far outweigh these issues that can be fixed. Once you buy one, it’s relevant for years and years because of the updates. A Lexus will be outdated in 1-2 years and therefore lose a tremendous amount of value. That’s not the case with a Tesla. I was a gas car guy until about a month ago. My buddies who have Teslas have been telling me over and over to just go test drive one before I consider buying a new gas car. My response was always “yeah, yeah, yeah” but now I’ve test drove many of them and have decided on the MY. I take delivery Monday 9-21-20 and I’ve never been more excited about a vehicle purchase. I would recommend just going to your nearest Tesla dealership and giving one a try. If it doesn’t absolutely blow your mind, I will be surprised. I was a doubter until a month ago and now I’m definitely a “Tesla Guy”. I’m surprised by this but super pumped about it. If you decide to test drive one, let us know what you think. Good luck.

Great list, I am recommending to clients and friends, any issues especially panel/trim gaps, paint damage, interior issues, DO NOT TAKE DELIVERY of vehicle until resolved. I know there is excitement to take it home, but you have lost the edge to getting items taken care of on your timeline.

Hey! One other thing. I heard that some of the early Y owners said the heat pump was real loud. Have you noticed that on yours? Sandy Munro said the noise is cavitation and can be fixed. Maybe that is something to add to the list.

They are all loud. The next batches are supposed to be coming with a foam cover to reduce noise. Reports are that existing ones will get a retrofit.

Every Tesla Y owner (or soon to be) should view the Munro Live analysis videos of the Y, as you did David, as well should anyone making observations on the Y. There are some scary things being stated on KZbin videos that could become safety liability risks. BTG, you’ve made helpful delivery inspection suggestions, and a written list would be great at the end for viewers to take a “screenshot list” to reference at delivery.

Honestly depends on the issues and how willing you are to live with them. I’m trying to share as best I can what the did fix and what they didn’t to help you decide. Tail lights appear to be a no go, but door alignment is hit and miss on adjustments. Lift gate is also hit and miss on adjustments. If it’s panel gaps and you can’t live with that, they won’t fix those. Just decide what’s most important and what you can and can’t live with. Talk to them during delivery to get a good feeling for a no BS assessment on what they will fix.

Actually great questions! Is it still worth it? YES! You just need to check the car over and make sure everything is good. As I have said before, Tesla is good about addressing issues in time. Due to the coronavirus, they are slow right now at getting parts so most of the issues that I had during delivery have not yet been fixed. Although annoying, I’m giving most companies some slack. Still confident it’ll all be sorted out soon. The money we have saved in gas alone has made it worth it!

You forgot the alignment of the rear seat top edges. The right one is higher when looking in from the trunk. A known issue that Tesla has yet to find a fix.

Bearded Tesla Guy my lift gates glass is curved and it’s kind of fall of with roof glass. 100% to trunk. The seal can’t filter any water. Wut they told me it’s in factory specifications. If I like to replace the glass, I have to pay for it on my own packet. I was like WTF.

Update: Didn’t dawn to me to check the loaner (Model Y) and it had that same slit. Still uncertain what it’s for but it’s there. Hey there! So your checklist was a lifesaver, actually went to go pick up my Model Y yesterday and left with a loaner. Question, at the 8:52 mark when you’re starting to talk about the back set covers, my center back cover had a cut/tear on the left side of that center handle. They called me back today saying that it’s supposed to be there for “latching purposes” but couldn’t tell me for what. Do you have this tear back there on yours?

That slit is there to allow a bar to pass through. Just fold down the center seat only and you’ll see what it’s for. Then laugh a little and smile

Greatly appreciate for sharing the Check List, which was very helpful. We checked the MY with yours, like getting a rental car at the Burbank Center. I discovered a few paint and alignment issues. Some paint issues There is a rattle in the hood, sounds like my HO 2002 EXL when rear seats are folded. MY is now at the Tesla Service Center for the last 7 days and ETA is 6/30. Hopefully, they will resolve the defects.
