As a canadian who has driven a 2 wheel rear drive truck for most of my life with no traction control at all, you don't just go in circles. Spinning tires = no traction. Don't spin your tires. I do live in a snowbelt and the average winter depth of snow is 42 + inches on the ground. I also regularily work and thus drive on barely maintained cottage trails in the winter. I did finally buy a 4 wheel drive because of that fact, but only use the 4x4 mode on the nastiest of them very occasionally, and never on a maintained road, unless and only for freezing rain conditions if I am caught out in it.

I don't want to dissapoint you or anything, but that 2 motor thing and traction control in teslas... It's called 4x4 in non electric cars..
@MattMerkle4 жыл бұрын
Yeah but this is done with two motors and no complicated differential, which tends to break after a few years. The number of trucks I've been in with busted 4x4 modes are incalculable.

Independent motors with *two* orders of magnitude faster traction response than an ICE (single) engine design? Yeah that's not the same, but similar goals. 4x4 is fine compared to none, but it's just what can be done with the relatively more rigid ICE design limitations. It's not this flexible or responsive to traction conditions. Both track mode and off-road mode are utilizing this flexible setup, just with different software settings that handle their respective road scenarios on demand. A computer is better at handling this task, responding constantly, in fractions of seconds, to changing road conditions, adjusting each highly responsive motor to accelerate, decelerate, regenerate, etc, and leaving the driver free to concentrate on the task at hand.

As a tech guy, I like seeing where Tesla and the electric vehicle industry is going. I also enjoy seeing the innovations and better energy sources. However as a mechanic and car enthusiast, I would never give up combustion engines for electric motors. I enjoy the satisfaction of installing a new part, or fixing something broken. It's satisfying and fun. It's also something I can't really get out of an electric vehicle. I'm not hating on people who drive electric vehicles, and I have nothing against them, they're just not for me.

2:19 Most cars would be able to handle that with correct winter tires. In Nordic countries there are magazines such as (translated) "The world of Technology" which does this kind of testing each year for new vehicles. Most cars get up the hill with no problem although sometimes the driving computer won't comprehend the situation and gets "stuck". Model 3 had problems with its front boot plastic cracking in cold.

Tesla is kinda bad in terms of bang for buck, or well it depends on how much you value the drive train. But they're very low quality in relation to the price. Still great cars, and I would definitely still want one.
@Funminotaur4 жыл бұрын
You can’t do a roadtrip with a tesla. You need to get to a supercharger like 5 times. A electric car is *not* more friendly for the environment. They need to make the batteries and after 5 to 10 years they need to break down the batteries. Most electricity is still made from fossil fuels. They just don’t want you to drive in a old volkswagen diesel from 1986 because they were made like tanks. They never brake down. If something breaks down, it’s super cheap to repair. People don’t buy new cars anymore because there old volkswagen is still doing fine. It’s all about the money. I can’t believe people don’t see that.

@@Funminotaur EVs have been proven time and time again to be more environmentally friendly. Even in locations primarily powered by coal.
