We have now put 25,000 miles on our LR AWD Tesla Model Y. What a better time than now to do a review with so many miles.
We have owned this Tesla Model Y for 11 months now and the 25k miles are broken out between 8,550 miles of road trips, and 16,450 miles of commute and every day driving.
How has the Tesla Model Y held up during these last 11 months? What has gone wrong, and what has gone great?
Overall, this review is focused on the true cost of owning the Model Y for 25k miles, the maintenance required, my favorite features, as well as the must have accessories.
We have traveled far on 4 road trips now, towed a 3k lb plus trailer, camped in the car, and so much more. I am excited to share with you the unbiased full review of this amazing electric family car.

I am a automotive painter. Bumpers not matching is normal. Some colors or worse then others but normal. It's not a tesla problem. Take a drive around any other dealership and you will find new cars with the bumpers not matching. Even in a body shop we can paint the hole front end or rear-end with the bumpers at the same time out of the same gun, same painter and same paint. And like I said some colors will not match perfectly.

I picked up my Model Y on December the 13th 2020, and I use it for business (sales and service in Pest Control), as of today March 6,2021 I have put - 7823 miles on my Mr. Frost. What I have noticed is that it does much better on range when in Chill mode than when in Standard. I think the car is amazing and it is a joy to drive, just wish the basic autopilot had lane change functionality. Hate that I have to exit autopilot when moving out of the way or having to over take. C’mon Elon, give us that functionality.

What happens when the warranty runs out, that is the major question. How expensive are the repairs going to be during a 10-15 year period when the upfront cost of the vehicle is already so high. Longevity has not been tested.
@BeardedTeslaGuy
@BeardedTeslaGuy 3 жыл бұрын
It’s the most valid question of them all. So far we only have the model S for reference and it has been known to hold stupid miles in longevity. We like to think the 3/Y can do the same, but only time will tell

If you have a model 3 p be extremely careful on ice in those factory tires. I am in alabama got mine in Aug. Under 40 degrees they get hard... meaning no grip compared to 60 or 70 degrees. I am waiting on my all weather set to be shipped.

The reason the tires were "terrible" is most likely because they are summer tires. In anything other than really cold winter conditions summer tiers are the best. I used to live in Houston Tx and now live in Dallas and I run summer tires on my car all year round and love them. Except when we had that snow storm a few weeks ago. During that time I had absolutely no traction at all. But I love summer tiers for their grip. Also you said "30k miles on a gas car doesn't sound good" it all depends on the tires. Super sporty summer tires usually last around that maybe a little less (usually i get anywhere from 20k to 30 miles)

My white paint was perfect when my Y came at Christmas. Only issue so far is that the paint as already almost completely gone off the little bulge at the bottom of the rear door just in front of the rear tire. We live in the country and the gravel roads have taken a toll. I did expect this from seeing other people mentioning it and yes I did see some stick on 3M type product that could be applied but they seemed expensive and I don't think they would last very long on the gravel so one day I'll have to get some paint work done or a wrap or something before I sell it. My dually fenders do the exact same thing to the paint on the gravel roads. Just the nature of where we live I guess

Comparing to a well equipped Honda Accord that averages 30 MPG combined and 50 dollar oil changes, I still don't see the value for a commuter car. The staggering Tesla depreciation is still outweighing the cost savings, but I think the gap will shrink over time. Tesla is definitely a solid company and their cars are quite nice.

After 4 months with our Tesla we are very disappointed. The car brakes hard and it is dangerous because there is no apparent reason for it. The cars auto high low beams go from high to low beam constantly. We drove 15 miles and the lights went from high to low and back without any oncoming traffic on a dark road at least 100 times. It’s alarms go off with nothing around and brakes for no reason. On auto steer on the highway @ 70 miles per hour it hard braked several times for no apparent reason I’m talking 70 to 40 in seconds. We now don’t use cruise control, auto steer, auto head light dimmer. These cars are not cheap and all the options they come with should work and not be dangerous for other traffic or us. There are many things we like but these things mentioned are dangerous. We will probably sell it and find an alternative that we can test drive first before laying out thousands.

The phantom braking has gotten worse in recent updates. Just know that software will improve this, and it just takes time. I understand the frustration though, I hate phantom braking. I find near Semi's on the highway it freaks out so I know to keep my foot near the pedal in those situations.

Your energy cost computes to 4.7 cents per mile. My Honda Insight averages 5 cents per mile and I can top off in 5 minutes without having to search for a charging station on a road trip. If your battery fails it’s a very expensive repair. My hybrid battery can fail and the car will still run on the engine. Then there is the cost of the car. Your Tesla is about double that of my Honda. I’m not seeing much economic upside for a Tesla over a modern hybrid.

@@BeardedTeslaGuy Understood. For me (an owner of German cars for 20 years) I am concerned that the dealership says that the only thing the Tesla will need is new tires and brakes. I have done a ton of research on the Tesla vehicle because I am looking at making a new car purchase. The Tesla definitely needs more maintenance than tires and brakes! don't want to be one of those "unlucky" individuals that need repairs because as I understand it they are VERY costly when out of warranty. And I am not one to get a new car every 5-7 years. All that being stated, it is truly a beautiful car. But, because it is an expensive one too I would like it to be a bit more consistent and reliable in terms of quality and longevity.

@@laloajuria4678 the research I have done shows that some of the parts on the car begin to wear after a while and need replacement. The cost comes in when the car is out of warranty and the replacement parts and labor are very expensive. For example, I own a mercedes but it is rather old and outside of warranty so I no longer take it to the dealer for repairs. Tesla owners will not have this option which will leave them vulnerable to high repair costs...

How much are repairs once you're out of warranty. That's when the whole "cheaper than gas cars" may change, since with a gas car you can take it to your local mechanic, and with an electric car you have to use Tesla service and pay for that premium. I'm not criticizing, just working through things in my head.

Would you still wait on the EV credit if looking to buy right now? I am absolutely itching to buy a Tesla finally and the Green Act is now 1 month out and has zero movement. Just curious. Thanks! As a separate question, does autopilot kick off when changing lanes if you don't have FSD? The one I test drove changed lanes if I held the stalk down and I still cannot figure out what feature that is because the previous ones with FSD did not require the stalk to be held but just pressed once.

@@BeardedTeslaGuy I can't for the life of me figure out why it was making me hold the stalk instead of just click it. I agree about the EV credit, its just so hard to keep waiting! I take forever to make up my mind and once I do I'm ready to rock. Haha I have read that the EV credit only offsets tax that you owe at the end of the year rather than being a credit/refund against total tax liability for the year. Have you seen it put that way? It doesn't make any sense to me and I could change my withholdings to make sure I pay more at the end of the year but I never owe $7k at the end, in fact I usually get a little bit of a refund. Which according to what some posters have said, that would mean I'm not eligible for the credit anyhow, but like I said that doesn't make any sense at all to me.

I’m, well, that’s pretty inaccurate. Here in Indiana, we just increased the gas tax to .175/gal. I had to pay an EV fee at registration of $150. If an average person drives 12k miles, I’d have to be driving a 14 mpg vehicle to pay the same in taxes via the pump. Now look at the MPG of your car and tell me who’s paying more in road taxes...

On the final portion, my model y said 13% was left with about 25 miles to get to my brother's house and I began to really sweat if we would make it. navigation calculated my arrival with 11%. then about a half way, a warning was flashed up saying 'there are no known charging facilities within range of your batterie's ability to get you there.' There is a real big area in middle south Georgia where there are no charging facilities. Not to fear, trusting Tesla, i rolled up in my Brother's driveway with 11% as Tesla said i would.
