We just got PTO today from our provider, PG&E. We live in Nor Cal, El Dorado Co. We had our final inspection two weeks ago. I was very surprised it only took 2 weeks. We opted for 1 power wall and a new 9.4 Kw system. However, I think I am going to add a second PW at the end of summer. Tesla initially told me 2 was the way to go but I did not want to have to finance anything.

After being switched to NEM 3.0, I see why you would switch to battery backup. I’m still on NEM 2.0, so, I’m getting full price for the power I generate (not on PG&E). I don’t have many power outages, though that is a possibility in an emergency. My solar system is a few years older, started in 2011, and is using Enphase microinverters, so I’m glad to hear your system was compatible with Powerwall 3. I don’t have a lot of wall space for Powerwalls, and the distance between yours was eyepopping. I would have to install inside the garage, or one inside and one outside the garage wall. I thought I was all set with a 4Kw Solar system, but the City Utility is planning three double digit rate increases in the next 3 years. So, I think it’s time to upgrade, especially if the City changes over to NEM 3.0.

That's really cool! I haven't seen a review of a system like this yet. I don't know if you post KZbin videos, but I'd be interested to see how it works. So is DC converted to AC at the IO8M then converted back to DC to store on the battery? If it's going straight to your house does it bypass the inverter in the Powerwall? Depending on your use case, that could be more efficient in the long run! Anyways, super interesting setup you got there.

Wow 20k for just battery install I installed a EG4 18KPV and 2 EG4 14.5 KWH batteries for $10k. We AC coupled the inverter to the existing micro inverter system, and I added a critical load panel now if my power goes out I have several hours of battery power as well as my solar continues to charge even when the power is out. The EG4 system cost about $8500 I had a local electrician assist with wiring it up we got a permit pulled I did all the installation he did the wiring his charge was only $2200. I can add more batteries for $3600 each from EG4 minor permit pull would be all that is needed.

Thanks for the informative video. I have a 8.91kw system and want to put 2 PW3 and everyone is telling me that i need to add panels. Is that correct? Do you produce enough power to fully charge both batteries? Do charge both batteries to 100% and also discharge them to 0 daily? Can these 2 batteries have enough juice to charge the Tesla?
@TeslaTipsTrips2 ай бұрын
Your system is larger than mine, and my 2 Powerwalls are charging fully from my panels daily. Keep in mind it changes throughout the year for solar production. Two Powerwalls are 27kwh, so no, it won't charge a Tesla vehicle with over 60kwh capacity. Also, you charge the Powerwalls from the grid as well, when rates are cheaper, like overnight. You can even have Powerwalls without any solar, so I'm not sure why someone told you to get more solar panels. Thanks for watching!

My dual Powerwall 3 system went live less than a week ago. Using Tesla solar too. Still waiting for final inspection to sell back to the grid but we’re already about 70% PW/solar, 30% grid. Like you I’ve been mesmerized by the app. Two questions: 1) sometime the app shows power being discharged to the grid. Since I’m not approved for the yet, what’s actually happening to that power? Is is turning my meter back? 2)At night the Tesla logo on my PW3s light up, but one was brighter than the other. Does that mean anything? Thanks!
@comicrandomness32893 ай бұрын
For #1 you won't get that energy back. It's gone. Even if you're meter goes backwards Edison doesn't begin to keep count until after pto. To be fair that's Edison and I don't know if other electric companies are different.

As I look at the specs for the Powerwall 3 I assume it can't power the entire house, including the AC, at the same time. Does it have any sort of load managing system that prevents all of the loads from running at the same time if the power goes out?
@TeslaTipsTrips2 ай бұрын
It certainly can handle the entire house, including AC. For our house running as normal, with AC, it uses about 10% an hour. Without AC about 1% per hour.

@TeslaTipsTrips2 ай бұрын
Because I had existing solar. They don’t disrupt that.
@bladerunner1458Ай бұрын
You could use any solar collectors for the Tesla power wall three. There is a certain minimal DC input that you do have to provide. Also, you could connect multiple solar array to the power wall three. The DC from the solar collectors is converted to the proper DC voltage to charge the batteries. This is a more efficient set up.

As it stands, on cloudy days I turn on the grid to charge whatever the sun didn't get a chance to. As you say though, just reworking when you run your clothes and dish washer, if you can, will make it work though in off grid.

Just got quotes from Tesla and their installer, Freedom Forever as I live in the south and they contract their installation. That said, I've got a 5K sq home in the rural south, and wanting to get as much "grid independence" as possible as I don't think the grid will keep up with demands in the next 3--5 years where I live and likely to see rolling blackouts, and perhaps longer periods of outages. That said, they think I can get by with 2 power walls, and panels to support them however, I'm wondering if it's not worth doing 3 power walls to maximize capacity and assure longer independence from the grid. I also have a 24KW Generac, whole home generator that runs on propane which is nice because I'll have 4 sources of energy in total, pretty cool!
