It's just amazing to see how Tesla is handling all those situations. I'm Driving a Skoda Enyaq and Volkswagen is 10 years behind! My car is losing tracking of lane lines and would just drive in the next tree if I wouldn't intervene....without any warning. The software Volkswagen is delivering, is just bad. Yes, Tesla is pushing the limits, but other companies should try to get somewhat on that level.

Yeah, technically you can say it's getting better, but the ways it still screws up is very disconcerting, and you have to be biased to say it's really making progress. The progress on the underlying fundamentals is miniscule per update. Something is definitely rotten at the core. The fact that Tesla can't solve phantom braking in either version despite being such a huge deal in the media and with owners means something is rotten in Denmark. I would like to be a fly on the wall to understand what's really going on in the core of their team. Is the core problem the data they have as an input just isn't good enough and isn't going to be good enough from the current cameras and their positions in the car, or is the software core rotten, and it needs yet another complete rewrite, or both? All software just does 3 things: 1) Input data, 2) manipulate the data, and 3) output data. That's all every software in the world since the beginning of software does, period. So which of those 3 things is Tesla not getting right?

In Canada slowing down for a blinking yellow is what is stated to be done on almost every web site I can find. Just because you learn some bad habits does not mean that is what the car should do.

You should do some controlled edge case tests at some point. Like look for a quiet street, park a car there and have someone throw the door open as you drive by on FSD. Or place stuff on the road and see if it avoids things, it cant classify. Or stuff like that.

Hey Chris, on the programming bit, the reason it seems like there is regression is because it's learning with ever increasing input and conflicting scenarios. It's actually not a product of programming, more of a product of learning/understanding.

The yield signs are the least of its concerns for roundabouts right now. Single lane ones like the ones Chris does are ok, but I have 2 lane roundabouts near me and they are a disaster. The care literally drives them illegally.

There are a couple intersections in my area that have yield signs where the other traffic directions have stop signs, and that seems to confuse FSD. I think it can see both yield and stop signs, and has a hard time knowing which one to obey. It also stops way too far before certain yield signs, but not all. I haven't figured out what conditions cause it to do that.

We have lots of wrong map data where I live and it has been a real issue for me. It will get in wrong lanes, switch out of a lane for no reason, and try to change lanes into the shoulder. I hope they can rely less on map data for lane assignment and only use it for deciding where a turn is.

@6:50 I have seen the exact opposite, where the car insists on following nav data despite what it can physically see. Constantly trying to turn from straight lanes and go straight from turn only lanes because the nav data is out of date :( To address your "how do you not use the map" the problem is for example by my house there are 3 lanes, 1 is straight and 2 turn left. This is a recent change. Previously there was 1 left and 2 that went straight. The car using map data still thinks both right lanes go straight, despite the fact that one of them is actually a turn only. It physically can see it is turn only, and even shows the right symbol on the display, but still thinks the lane can go straight based on the map data and almost always attempts to use that lane to go straight (because the proper lane has more traffic). This is why it needs to let what it SEES trump what is in the nav data.

I have done some study and work around machine learning and AI development. I can say, without a doubt, speed/acceleration is part of the profiles as an adjustable/controllable property. So I would expect each profile to have an undocumented slew of properties/features that are varied without saying so. I wouldn't be surprised if after Level 3, Tesla adds a customizable/learned profile that you as a driver train and it shows all the metrics/properties used.

Hi Chris do you have any two lane roundabouts in your area? I haven't seen any YTer record that. I have tested on my own in my area and it handles them very badly, but I also know everyones experiences differ. Here, in Florida, the proper handlign of a 2 lane roundabout is to enter using the proper lane based on your destination; right lane can go right or straight, and left lane can go straight, left, or u turn. Once in the roundabout you do NOT change lanes, and you exit the roundabout in the same lane you entered. You also yield to BOTH lanes on entering. When FSD does it, it will enter at random lanes, change lanes in the middle of the roundabout - sometimes even just drive in the middle of the lanes lol - and exit using different lanes. Its overall a hot mess for me sadly. I don't know if anyone else has different experiences as I Said I've not seen anyone on YT with multilane roundabouts.

Prior to 10.11.1, the thing I disliked perhaps the most about FSD are the turns where most intersections have 90 degrees turns, but on right turns, it doesn't turn sharp enough so usually, the car moves left before making a right turn and since the turn is not sharp enough, I'm usually in the middle of the street when turning into a 2-lane street. A left turn is the opposite and while you don't quite need to make a 90 degree turn since there is more room for the turn, it is cutting the turn too sharp especially when there is no divider on the road. I was almost sweating it because there was a car making a left turn in the oncoming road. I have noticed that where there are multiple right-turn lanes or multiple left-turn lanes, it turns as expected, so I don't know why it can't do that where then is only a single right-turn lane or single left-turn lane.

Just purchased a 2018 Dual Motor, Long Range Model 3 with FSD and as far as the FSD goes, I'm not greatly impressed with it. I'll have to check what version it's on but the previous owner had it set up to automatically update. I've been driving on a 4 line divided highway and have had several weird things happen. Even though I have the route it will sometimes try to pull off the road when it sees one of those long turn off lanes leading into a parking lot or business. It will automatically signal and move into the left lane for no reason (no cars or objects near). When passing it doesn't move back into the right lane as it's set to do. It see traffic signals perfectly but a flashing yellow light at an intersection will have this thing thinking its going to turn red so it slows hard before I press the accelerator to drive through. On a major highway it started to miss a very easy off ramp and has missed the speed limit signs several times. I would have thought FSD was far better than it is but then again, it's brand new to me so maybe I'm over expecting? It also hits the brakes for no reason and slows down like it sees something. It's all just odd to me.

The thing about "relying less on map" only means that the car doesnt use the map as much for getting an understanding of the geometry of intersections. That is all it said on the release notes. Of course, people are taking it to mean whatever they want lol

Hey there! Thanks for doing these videos. I am a FSD Beta user however, I am still on 10.10.2. It has been over 4 weeks since I have had an update. This version is terrible for phantom braking. County and state roads are the worst. I just turn it off if anyone is driving behind me. I get concerned that they will think I am brake checking them. Road rage is real. How bad is it you ask. I have a 30 minute drive on state road 32 in Indiana to see my daughter and her family. It is not uncommon for the car to phantom brake 15 to 20 times in that distance. The conditions don't seem to matter. Bright sun at high noon, or overcast with no shadows, late evening with long shadows, with traffic or me alone as far as the eye can see. Any idea if my lack of an update is common or should I start feeling like a step child. I report (camera button) each occurrence and wonder if the Tesla FSD team is just tired of the constant reports from me. They are only constant because the problem is constant.

I would always try to stay to the latest version when possible and slow down a little doing reports (I don't own a car). If you are worried of someone behind you saying that you are a bad driver when really it is the car then you could try putting a note on the back of the car letting them know it is self driving. For example. " *Sorry if this car causes issues, it is in self driving beta. If needed, I do take over when it causes issues, sorry for the inconvenience* "

You’re not alone. Even though phantom braking issues have improved from when it used to do it literally every half block or so it’s still extremely bad. Before I got FSD beta, when autopilot was less complex I ghosted my foot over the brake pedal waiting for issues to occur. Now phantom braking is so bad you have to partially ignore the brake and ghost the accelerator pedal to prevent getting rear ended and that’s a huge problem and safety concern. FSD beta is pretty widely used now so it’s likely your reports are being overlooked. I’ve had it sense the first batch after safety score was implemented so I’ve seen a lot of updates. I have specific issues that happen every single time on specific turns during my routine drives and have reported them every single time and after what 10 updates? The problem still hasn’t been fixed.

Echoing everything you said here. My daily commute is 100 miles round trip with 30% on county, two lane roads. The brake checking behavior is bad and with no provocation or consistent artifacts. I use it daily for about 5 miles then disengage. Prior to FSD Beta, (standard autopilot with FSD) it performed flawlessly on these roads. The software seems to be juggling bad behaviors and not improving. This beta tester is unhappy.

What does a flashing yellow light mean in Canada? In the US I don't see it being much different. A flashing yellow light means you should drive with caution when approaching and moving through the intersection. So for the Tesla to slow down this is totally acceptable. It even says to slow down on many web sites when you look up what to do with a flashing yellow.

They'll release HW4 with upgraded cameras end of this year. Then announce regional Neural Nets in 2-3 years time. Then launch.

17:35 Tesla is running their autopilot with a neural network in order to facilitate machine learning so "technique changing" isn't quite how I would describe it. From the perspective of the developer, the neural net is a black box. You put in the input values (the cameras and additional sensors) and it spits out your outputs (steering, acceleration, etc.). The developer doesn't actually know the neural net's behavior (until the neural net is tested in real-world situations) because the developer didn't directly hard-code a bunch of decisions for it. The dev gave it a bunch of training data and the neural net learned its behavior from that training data. In that process, it does its best to adjust the weights of each connection between its neurons to match each example it was given as closely as it can, but the success of that training can never truly be perfectly validated for something as complex as driving, but we can gain some degree of confidence after a whole lot of testing in the real world. Also, I don't mean to say that the devs don't know anything about the product they've made. After thousands of hours of work, they certainly know a whole lot about it and have learned some tricks to tweak different behaviors and such, but they still can't ever truly know its behavior in every given scenario because the neural net acts as a layer of abstraction. It's great for getting the computer to "program itself" since it would be entirely impractical to hard-code an autopilot program, but it makes it much harder to understand the behavior of the autopilot and predict its moves. You can't take some scenario where the autopilot failed and go: "Oh, that's because of this one weight on this one synapse" whereas if your hard-coded program has a bug, you can point to a specific line (or several lines) of code and (sometimes) easily fix it.

@@AudiTTQuattro2003 Quite. There's no way to validate it for every situation. I mean, a neural net is supposed to basically emulate a brain, so it's just like a human learning to drive in a way. I mean, we learn to trust other humans to drive and do other complicated tasks in our lives, so I think we will learn to trust these systems as well (it's just a question of if we will trust them before they are ready I think)

For Bridson the reroute came in late and the car was too close to the turn. Good abort but the reroute algorithm is not good. It calculates way too slow and by the time the route comes back it is too late for the turn. This has been an issue for a while. Telsa needs to fix their routing algorithm to take this into account. Surprised they haven't yet.

I’m on 10.10.2 still. Have had it sense the first batch of version 10 after safety score. With each update I’ve grown less and less excited and hopeful for improvements. In 10 updates I’m still seeing identical issues that I’ve seen from the beginning of version 10. Simple mistakes at specific points where it fails 100% of the time and has not been corrected with any updates. I’ve basically convinced myself that when I get this update it will likely be more of the same

I wonder how they're collecting data for snowy conditions. Seems like it would be tough to label manually. You'd probably need to label once without snow and then localize a snowy video to that and transfer the labels or something...

From what I see, it would be nice if the car didn't round the corners of the left turns so much. Human drivers do that sometimes, but most often we pull straight ahead just shy of the lane we're turning into and then turn hard left to make the turn. I thought that they said they were going to do that.

The "long slowdown" after dropping in to a slower speed limit has been driving me crazy. I take over, slow down, and report it every single time it happens, but it has consistently happened in every release since 10.3 for me. It seems like it wants to accelerate really fast, but hardly wants to slow down at all.

Interventions and interventions are getting at very low levels. This is great. I guess the next challenge is fixing that goofie behavior. I see a path to success.

Chris I just sold my Model 3 with FSD Beta and got my Model Y LR. I know you went through this but was there anything you had to do to get the FSD beta on to your new car? I miss it soooo much! I put in the request in the car, but I no longer have the tesla safety feature in my phone app, so I worry I won't get it back.

Dunno if it's the camera angle, American driving or the car, but it looks like it is cutting corners a little tight for comfort, especially when crossing traffic. It also looks like it is trying to drive at the maximum speed allowed instead of driving to conditions, there should probably be a setting for that somewhere..

Hi. I noticed that you are using yoke on modelY. Be careful with the yoke. It messes up how the airbag work, it relies on the wheel to react against it. Franz von Holzhausen mentioned in his last interview (spike's car radio) that it was tricky thing to reengineer airbag because of the yoke for model s/x. I think it would be worth to mentioned that on your videos.. because thats quite significant trade off...

It was re-engineered. What’s your point?
@athli
@athli 2 жыл бұрын
@@envisionelectronics It was reengineered for model S&X. So there is decent risk that if someone watches these yoke retrofits and thinks its good idea to put yoke in their model 3/Y.. they are likely loosing some of the safety. And did not see anyone mentioning that.. So should be clearly stated as trade off..
@athli
@athli 2 жыл бұрын
Afaik some of these yokes for model3/y are literally amended existing model 3/y wheels. And I did not realise that it might be impactful for how the airbag interacts with the wheel.. until Franz mentioned that..
