I drove the ID Buzz in Switzerland recently as a hire vehicle with the family. I was pretty impressed with it. Easy to drive, smooth and spacious. Perhaps it was the trim we had but my bugbears were: lack of rear opening windows, lack of good AC reaching the back seats. As it was the EU version, lack of additional seats I think is a dumb move (it's shorter). The inbuilt satnav was awful and its own range predictions were not the best. But generally I really enjoyed driving it over the alps and it never let us down. I'd buy one if I had the money and it had the extra seats.

30:27 Jesse’s reaction to Zac replying that the VW ID bus, higher price, higher trim version doesn’t have more range is absolutely hilarious! 53:32 is super interesting as it explains a lot of the challenges between virtual reality, as in computers, and reality. Seriously, the NYK channel is just about the best out there to learn about everything electric.
@jonevansauthor3 ай бұрын
I mean, it's not a VW bus, and I don't get why people are acting like it is. It's not cheap, it's got literally none of the style of any of the several versions people have nostalgia for, the driving position is in a completely different place meaning it's literally nothing like, it's useless as a camper, and everyone knows VW's software stack is a total joke. In no way is it in the same family as the VW Bus of yore, in the same way that the 'Mini' you see now, is a despicable cash grab and not a real Mini (look at them side by side to see the size difference and you'll see why it was called a Mini in the first place and isn't one now).

So far no one there has any answers and I feel that they don’t care. I’m out over 2000 worth of tools and it has affected my job. I will say my previous experiences at this center were great and the techs seemed more attentive.

As an Electrical Engineer, I can tell you for certain that an inverter (DC to AC) and a charger (AC to DC) are completely different in design and the parts they use, and that there is absolutely positively no way to simply run either one of them "in reverse" without letting out the magic smoke. The only reason I can think of to disable the bed inverter in one charging mode but not the other might be one of heat. If a part that is near the bed inverter gets hot in one charging mode but not the other. that could cause the bed inverter to also heat up, and that could be the reason why it is disabled in one charging mode but not the other. Also, if the Inverter and Charger are in the same enclosure as a single replaceable part, this would exacerbate the heating issue.
@tedoptional-p8l3 ай бұрын
As a Applied Computing person, (my twin brother is an electrical engineer), I can say that you are partly correct. What they are talking about is using the D/C to A/C converter/inverter to do both up converting 240 Volt A/C to 400 / 800 Volts and D/C to 240Volt / 120 Volt A/C at the same time. It was not designed for that. But there are at least two of them for split charging. Four, I think. It is a marvelous system. Remember that the Tesla uses both A/C and D/C motors.
@Treking3 ай бұрын
@@tedoptional-p8l What you say is true, but my comment was directed at Jesse's statement that you could "run that in reverse" in relation to the "inverter". You can not. The Tesla engineer called it an "AC/DC Converter" which is correct. It combines the function of an inverter and a charger and some computer controlled switching elements. The Tesla Engineer also said that the "AC/DC Converter" was not used during DC fast charging, so it was available for use as an inverter (DC to AC) for the bed outlets. So, to sum up, the inverter is part of the "AC/DC Converter", which includes a charger, an inverter, and switching. However if you ever were to run an "inverter" in reverse, it WILL let out the magic smoke. Sorry to be pedantic, but words do have meanings.

Zach and Jess: While I think the referral program makes sense, I’m hesitant to do so because of my concerns about the lack of Tesla Service Centers, the lengthy times it takes to get an appointment and the quality of their work. Despite seeing many Teslas where I live, I’m about 90 miles from the nearest service center. My service appointments have been on the average 2 or 3 weeks out and I’ve had to go multiple times because the issue with car hasn’t been properly fixed. Mobile service has been available but there have been instances where they don’t have the capability to fix my issues, cracked windshield and camera (cruise control). I want you guys to solicit other owners with similar stories and do a video to discuss this Tesla glaring shortcoming. Despite initial claims that Tesla’s are ‘maintenance free’, I have not found that not to be the case, especially when the cameras and electronic board go bad. I’m now hesitant to recommend a Tesla to anyone because of this lack of service options. My feeling is that service centers should be as close as Superchargers to customers. There are 11 Supercharger locations closer than my Service Center. Is it too much to ask for one within 50 miles where I live?
@richf36543 ай бұрын
I would say it's unfortunate that I have had to use service several times but it has always been good from my experience here in Pittsburgh.

14:43 don't understand why Tesla is making them? I worked at Bell as a co-op for a time back in the later seventies. One quarter I worked in a group where we ordered "data sets" (aka modems) for customers who wanted to hook their computers and/or terminal equipment up to their land-lines. At the time, no one was allowed to hook up non-authorised equipment (that is pretty much anything not sold by Bell) directly to the phone system. Bell had to control access to protect the system at large from possibly malicious (or system-circumventing) equipment. It also meant that Bell had a monopoly on the tech with little motivation to control costs, since they were all passed on to the customers. I credit Tesla more with concern over protecting the charging equipment and EVs from damage from misbehaving or sub-spec adapters than anything else, as the parallels between pre-1982 Bell and current Tesla are slim. As a sometime supercharger (I've made about 7,000 miles of long trips from Alabama in February, April and June this year, and value having reliably functioning superchargers on the road, so I am somewhat comforted that Tesla is supplying the connectors.

Tesla could engineer a version of Hardware 4 for earlier cars. Apparently there are physical differences in the sizes and shapes of the package, so this would take some work, but should be possible. They'd also either have to upgrade cameras or modify the software to use the lower res ones. We can always dream. HW4 showed up in Model Ys only a few months after I got mine. 🙂

SUGGESTION: To keep the supercharger reviews concise and systematic, there could be a template or list of things to say and in which order. Mention the list on every show so contributors can get it BEFORE making their videos. Example: Know the following before recording starts. 1. location in country , town, property 2. how many / what type / pull thru /etc 3. walking distance amenities 4.ease of access / special instructions 5. view / scenic / appearance 6. Keep it short and concise, make sure to shoot in landscape only, and pan around slowly to show the superchargers and everything around them.
