Left-hand traffic (LHT) and right-hand traffic (RHT) are the practice, in bidirectional traffic, of keeping to the left side or to the right side of the road, respectively. A fundamental element to traffic flow, it is sometimes referred to as the rule of the road. RHT is used in 165 countries and territories, with the remaining 75 countries and territories using LHT. Countries that use LHT account for about a sixth of the world's area with about a third of its population and a quarter of its roads. In 1919, 104 of the world's territories were LHT and an equal number were RHT. Between 1919 and 1986, 34 of the LHT territories switched to RHT. Many LHT countries were formerly part of the British Empire, although many were not, such as Sweden (which is now RHT), Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal and Suriname, among others. Conversely, many RHT countries were part of the French colonial empire. In LHT traffic keeps left, and cars have the steering wheel on the right, putting the driver on the side closest to the centre of the road. Roundabouts circulate clockwise. In RHT everything is reversed: traffic keeps right, the driver sits on the left side of the car, and roundabouts circulate counterclockwise. In most countries rail traffic follows the handedness of the roads, although many of the countries that switched road traffic from LHT to RHT did not switch their trains. Boat traffic on rivers is effectively RHT. Boats are traditionally piloted from the starboard side to facilitate priority to the right.

10:36 vs 11:10. While I have every confidence that programmers and AI will work it out, notice how similar the two situations are. At 10:36 there is a line of cars ahead in the marked traffic lane. If you don't go around these, your going to be waiting a long time. :) At 11:10, there is a line of cars ahead in the marked traffic lane. If you go around these, things might not end well. I suspect subtle situations like these may be what takes the longest to solve before we get true driverless cars.
@natedammerich1745
@natedammerich1745 4 жыл бұрын
I agree that there’s a lot of nit picky situations that will be VERY hard to sort out. But it seems like this situation wouldn’t be that hard. All they have to do is distinguish between parked cars and driving cars. The first situation the cars are in a line as far left in the lane as they can be with no signs of movement. Second situation they are all in the middle of the lane.
@erwile
@erwile 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you're right that a lot of situations will be tricky. I know that you just gave an exemple to illustrate what you mean, but this situation might not be a problem, because their neural net already detects if a car is parked or if it's just stopped. It's not implemented of course, and it doesn't mean that they've already trained their neural net to do these maneuvers, but if the neural net has enough context and exemple, it can do anything. I think that the car is mainly learning to see and describe the road. When it can recognize things very well, it's going to learn to predict things, like predicting that a pedestrian will cross. And then it will learn to react to what it predicts...

@juliocamacho8354
@juliocamacho8354 4 жыл бұрын
In the first situation, the cars are not over the sidewalk, and they are using half or more of the lane. In the second situation, the parked cars are mostly on top of the sidewalk and just the right tire invades the lane leaving plenty of space. I believe that's why the Autopilot behaved differently in similar but not equal situations. Ai must learn weird ways towns park cars in some laces.

I think there are major improvements here and there, but what we need to get from this is that the AI model used to drive in Europe is a subset of the one used in America. Given that it has been trained to drive in the latter, we can only expect a worse performance here in Europe. Things may only start to change when Tesla develop is R&D department for the European market.

While impressive that road reminds me of the last 50 miles I drive through lovely villages from Thirsk to Scarborough. I love driving it and find it relaxing and I know what the Car is doing under my control. Sitting like that on roads like that would absolutely stress me out beyond comfortable in a £40-59k Car on AB. I take it that you driving these roads filter back and improve the next guy experience in a Tesla? If Tesla want me to let AP drive the west coast highlands to improve the Data by giving me a model3 for a few months they know where I am. (Glasgow)
@erwile
@erwile 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're righ that AP is not made for country road (for the moment), and yes every Tesla helps collecting important data (if Tesla needs it) that will train the AP AI. I think it's like a game, even if it can be stressful, but by the time it becomes very popular, I think AP will work very well in this type of roads. I think if you control the speed limit it's less stressful, but I of course controling the car can be much more fun and relaxing sometimes...

How can it be 60 miles/hour on that crappy road?

You'd be surprised. A lot of this kind of area just have a NSL sign at either end and leave you to your own judgement.

If you didn't have these roads at 60, a large amount of the roads in the UK wouldnt be 60

In Norway on roads that are much higher quality and wider than those in britain, the speed limit is only 80 km/h (50 mph). That kind of annoys me.

In Italy too, road like this is 90 km/h, all the “provinciale” is like that

Looking at these roads gives me anxiety, in the US a residential road like those in the video is at least double the size

I wonder if autopilot would go over the line even if there is a car right next on the oncoming lane? Love watching Autopilot videos, Thanks.

Have to admit, here in the US that kind of road would be more like 45 mph, blind corners and a rather thin road, but we often get up to 70 mp on two lane roads out in the middle of nowhere, like montana, idaho and wyoming.

The slow-to-25 on that one turn happens right after going over a "slow" sign on the road. Maybe it uses those to help decide the corner speed.

How were the chargers at Membury? I plan to get a Model 3 before the end of the year and would be using those services a lot to charge as I won't have home charging.

Should’ve taken it through Badbury. Would love to see how autopilot works there especially when you’re having to guess if cars are coming the opposite direction through those awful narrow lanes heading into Liddington.
