Tesseract are like 1 of the holy trinity of Djent/modern prog metal (the other 2 being Periphery & Monuments). Not literally but all 3 bands have been very key to the genres & funnily enough are all linked through different members throughout the years...Guitarist of Tesseract, Acle & Monuments guitarist John Browne were in a band together long ago named "Fellsilent" & previous Monuments vocalist Chris Barretto was also the vocalist for Periphery for a time before they got Spencer. There's also links with "Intervals" & "Skyharbor" (2 other awesome bands) through means of Dan Tompkins & awesome drummer Anup Sastry. Skyharbor's record "Guiding Lights" is a fantastic musical journey of a record. 👍🤘

I feel like Tesseract is simultaneously well known and not known at all, they don't get as much attention as they deserve. Spiritbox has referred to them as an influence and you can hear some of those chugging bass parts in their songs that are in a lot of Tesseract's songs. They mesh the guitars and bass in such a unique way. They recently put out a live album with a lot of their best songs on it, and they sound better than they have in their whole history (especially Daniel Tompkins' vocals) so I'm really excited for the new album they're working on. You should check out their performance of Nocturne from the PORTALS album.

Daniel Tompkins has one of the prettiest male voices in "metal". I would highly suggest Earthside feat. Daniel Tompkins "A Dream In Static" for a great prog-metal ride. Heavier than this. A really great video also.

'King' by Tesseract is an absolute must. It has everything. Amos, the bassist, is absolutely incredible. Honestly indescribable basslines and sounds he can get out of that thing. Periphery and Tesseract are 2 bands that i've ever found that genuinely do not have a bad song at all. Check out literally anything from them, but yeah, do King first

This track has Martin Grech on guest vocals....hes the one with the wavy black hair. Brilliant guy and crazy talented. Theres a live studio version of the whole band and you can geek out over Amos Williams incredible bass tone.

I've been waiting for a new material about a couple years now, but I still go back and listen to their entire discography from time to time, most especially their album "Altered State".

I bet you’ll be surprised and extremely happy if you continue to look into TesseracTs discography. “One” and “Altered State” are my favorite two records from this band. Hexes is an interesting song to start with, but it doesn’t really show you everything they can do. Each album is pretty unique to be honest. All have their own moods you could say. “One” is super heavy while still being atmospheric and melodic kinda like periphery/monuments but unique in its own right with some of the best rhythm, and breakdowns I’ve ever heard, with Dan Thomkins singing. (Same singer as Hexes) The best songs are Concealing fate and Eden but all are good. “Altered state” has Ashe O’Hara, only clean vocals on that record, dude has such an angelic voice, in contrast with the heavy guitar, it’s sooo good. Legit masterpiece in my opinion. Awesome rhythm and atmosphere in this album aswell. Tbh this album should be listened all at once but I know that’s probably not possible, but I’m serious haha. A good start would be the video on KZbin “Altered State Live in the studio” (it’s not completely live, it’s mixed and post processed like the studio recording, the video is just cool and it’s a good intro to the album) Anyways, If you’re going to listen to more of TesseracT, Songs from “Polaris” and “Sonder” should be left for last in my opinion, as I feel “One” and “Altered State” are more quintessential records. I still love Polaris and Sonder tho TLDR - Highly recommend the albums “One” and “Altered State” I hope next reaction is concealing fate 1-6!!!!

Never heard TesseracT described as math metal. Definitely huge in the Prog/Djent scene though. They aren't really a band that I like any individual songs from, but I enjoy sitting through their albums and just vibing with them. That bass tone at the end was absolutely beautiful *chefs kiss*

In some ways I would call them theatrical metal. Many bands use complex patterns to portray excitement but I find that Tesseract uses decisive patterns to portray moods. It doesn't have to be complex or anticipatable, so long as it's well thought out.

Glad you liked Tesseract! They are one of the best. Totally unique, altho the “Godfathers of Djent” are most certainly Meshuggah. As they started the sound in the 90’s. Tesseract are an late 2000’s interns of Djent for sure. A lot like Birds is really cool, just checked em out! Really almost nothing like Tesseract but the vocal approach is a bit similar sometimes. Is that an older Beyerdynamic? Love those mics!
