TEST ALTERNATOR WITHOUT METER

This test will show if the alternator is working...when you take battery cable off with the engine running, if the engine dies the alt. is not working. This test will work on any auto.

Never do this. It could destroy your computer on a new car. An EASIER WAY is to just put a screwdriver near the center of the alternator axl on the pulley. If the alternator is good the magnetic field will pull the screwdriver near the alternator. If not magnetic your alternator is bad. If it is magnetic your battery is probably bad.

I've been watching videos after videos and every single one has turned it into a God damn , hey how are you, my sister and my mom said this, my dad died 3 years ago and I'm sad, I got the gear knob stuck in my butthole and needed to call the neighbor and have him pull it out. The river we swam in as kids is 5 inches deeper than it was then. Oh and by the way, start the car and then remove the negative cable and if it dies then you have a shit alternator and if it runs then you have a good alternator. Being an older woman, mechanics think they can tell me anything and I'm going to go for it! I tried what you suggested on a 1998 Lexus ls400. It worked! It kept right on running. Never do this , use a meter , you could destroy the electrical system buy alternator causing a spike throughout the system, the battery will prevent this from happening dead or good, I see this all the time and people this could be an issue that is costly. Do not do this. you would want to completely check the alternator for other issues , it may charge , but also can drain your battery when car is off, check cables for corrosion, thigh everything, battery cables check. Grounds and main grounds .

I went and got a refubished one from autozone so after my mechanic put it in he said it was showing it charging battery then i took core back to autozone and had them tested it.there saying now after i just bought it its not charging battery could be regulator.so youre right..i just got to find a voltmeter and test it myself

You have to bypass the voltage regulator then start the engine and if the alternator works. The regulator is bad. Hope this helps you out.

Yes it should work on all gasoline auto,s. Now i do not know about the Hybrid auto.All vehicles have to have some kind of electricity to make the engine run.

The computers on new cars can be sensitive to the power spike of the transfer.The alternator wil send more load when battery is unkooked causing a spike and on new toyotas the idle gets reset when disconnecting the battery and reconnecting. Thanks for the uppoad though i drive a 99

It's not really true if the alternator is fresh it won't fry it as long as you test it for a short period before the regulators get hot. You have to remember if your battery gets really worn down the regulators get really hot to support the low voltage. So taking out the ground is the safest way to do it as long as you don't let it sit too long without the battery 😉. I think companies have figure a way to keep the regulators from frying too early because batteries are not consistent with voltage.

Juan i get defective parts a lot. The alternator that you put on is Bad. That is my opinion. If you check it with a volt meter with the engine running the voltage should read 13.8 to 14.2 volts. Hope this helps you out.

I did this and my engine ran for about 3 minutes then cut out? This was after I jumped started it and went for a quick drive. My car keeps draining it's battery overnight but I'm not getting any dimming lights on dash and stereo/blowers working fine. Instead of a dead battery could I have a faulty battery? No, the engine has to be running to test the alternator, when the engine is running you should have 13.8-14.2 volt,s on the meter, let me say this, the alternator does not start the engine, what it does is keep your battery charged when engine is running.

Danny Collins thank you for responding back to me. maybe it’s not my alternator then. we thought maybe it was crank sensor but today my check alt light was flashing. it started for like two seconds and then cut back off. my battery is brand new. i drove it all day saturday, moved it across the driveway on sunday and monday morning it wouldn’t start. all the lights come on, it sounds like it’s gonna start but then don’t. thank you for your videos.

OK now I know more about what is going on with your car, the altenantor light coming on, that means your not getting proper voltage to battery, it sounds like the altenator is bad, but also the battery needs to be tested first. ps, the cranshaft sensor will have nothing to do with your problem! Hope this helps you.

@@dannyc8338 my alternator light never came on. The only reason I suspected a problem was when I noticed the battery gauge arrow on the dash was very close to L. I bought a new battery, tested it and installed it. The gauge still reads low. Took it out in the rain had headlights and wipers going and the wipers were slow, lights did not flicker. Tested alternator with my battery charger and it read out of normal range. Did the test you mentioned here and truck shut off instantly. Gonna go buy an alternator.
