Seriously? Your problem is that Harley is doing too much and that they should hold some of their tech back? After WAAAAY too long they finally released a modern motor with four valves per cylinder and your reaction is that they're doing too much? They should've done this years ago. Maybe that way they wouldn't be in their current predicament. I just hope Harley can recover from this downward swing they're on because I'd rather not give my money to Indian. I like Harley because of its heritage but that doesn't mean I want my bike to have ancient technology. Harley used to be the best motorcycle producer in the world. It would be nice if they could get back there.

I like 4 valve per cylinder, but I think their problem is trying to work 8 valves with 1 cam. If they stuck with 2 cams it may have been even better. I've heard some of them are having cam issues

funny thing is that the milwaukee 8 is so similar to yamahas 113ci engine from the raider and stratoliner. And yamaha released that engine more than 10yrs ago. Harley shit on their costumers. Overpriced and old tech. But people still adore them it’s like religion. I like harleys don’t get me wrong, I like all bikes in general but it’s just too obvious. Hence, kawasaki’s vulcan 2000 had a freaking 125.3ci and that was back in 2004 and it came in stock with the bike. Such a shame that yamaha discontinued their cruiser lines.

@@Twincam808 it's not shitting on their customers if they're making what their customers want. Does a Yamaha Raider make more power than my 96 twin cam, yep. Does that bother me? Nope. I don't own my Road King to race. The twin cam does everything this bike is designed for, cruising and touring. Plenty of power for going down the highway at 90+. Raider is a cool bike, I'm not downing it at all. Just because a Harley doesn't put out as much HP or torque as X bike doesn't mean it's inferior. The HD offers a unique riding experience, that's what their customers buy.

EITMS = Engine Idle Temp Management System. Basically cuts off the rear cylinder at idle to keep temp in check. Some call it "parade mode" Also, the M8 CVO touring bikes are shipping with a serious 117ci power plant these days. Also, mounting from the right is a technique long used by motor officers to keep them from mounting/dismounting into traffic. Who cares how you get on the bike lol Keep doing what you're doing, God Bless and Ride safe.

Dave Murphy you are correct. I don't know what temp it activates, I'm sure it's different through the years/models but once a bike has reached a set temp, it kills the rear cylinder. The dead hole comes back on with the blip of the throttle, at least on my bike it does. I know "Parade mode" isn't the technical term, but I've heard it referred to as such in certain circles.

I’ve had a dozen bikes over the past 35 years and currently ride a 2017 Street Glide Special. It is simply a fantastic bike that is great for a quick ride in town or a 300 mile spin through the New Mexico mountains. Very few bugs with the tech and smoother shifting than a lot of previous HDs. There are a lot of great bikes on the road but I’m sure loving this one.

It stems from equestrian etiquette always Mount from the left side that's why the kickstand is always on the left side that way the bike is angled towards you when you're getting on
@tomb.8485
@tomb.8485 5 жыл бұрын
MAYNARD -1 It wasn’t etiquette, it was a necessity. Most people are right handed and in old times you would wear your sword on you left side for easy access. If you mounted your horse from the right side your sword could hit your horse, causing it to buck. So mounting from the left side of your horse became the norm. Since everyone was mounting horses from the left, when motorcycles came along they put the kick stand on the left to tilt the motorcycle that way since it it easier to mount into the lean and not try to stretch over it.

I liked the 107 in the road glide. It was very smooth and powerful. I rode the street bob and felt like it didn’t want to rev out at all. I was actually curious if it was gonna blow. Then I got on my Dyna street bob and realized why I love my bike so much better. I think the softail needed at least a stage 1 and maybe it would feel better. Also didn’t feel like the chassis was leaps and bounds better either

I had a pre-Rushmore 103 Streetglide, I currently have a Rushmore 110 Streetglide. I've had M8 bikes as loaners when my bike was in for servicing. I think that if you have a stock pre-Rushmore 103 Streetglide and jump onto a stock M8 107 Streetglide you'll notice a whole bunch of improvements. The motor responds better, the suspension front and back is better, the ABS works better, the airflow management is better and the list goes on. I think it's worth the upgrade cost. But nice as the new bikes might be, I'm always glad to get back on my Stage 2 110 CVO with front and rear Ohlins.

I bought the ‘17 Road Glide with the 107. Loved it. Took trips by myself to FL and such. I was not bringing my wife along on the longer trips because of a lack of storage space. She wanted to come along so I finally broke down and traded the Road King for a ‘19 Limited with the 114. Now, I can’t stay off it. I have 8,800+ miles on it in about 4 months. LOVE IT! Getting 50+ mpg’s on trips where I ride 55 to 65 mph. Even at 75 to 80 mph, I get 47 mpg’s. The power is NICE. No, it isn’t a GSXR. But, it will jump from 0 to 80 in a heartbeat. Tons of fun!

My 2019 Road King's 114 motor is just as smooth as the 107 and noticeably quicker. Being able to ride them back to back really makes the differences in smoothness power and refinement really evident. Generally you get on from the left, so you're not applying excess pressure down onto the kickstand. From the left the pressure goes more to the suspension. A bad angle from the right may put more pressure on the kickstand.... and you get on horses from the left too, traditionally.😁

Having rode a motor on the police department, we train to mount from the right. Mostly because of vehicle traffic approaching on the left when making a traffic stop. Hold the front brake and mount from the right, I cant really function any other way. I can usually spot other LEO's riding by the way they mount and the way they stop, motormen never place 2 feet on the ground..never. Only right foot on the ground at stops, leave your left for gear changes. Ride safe all.

what does only putting one foot down at a stop have to do with shifting? when you stop you should be in 1st gear, you aren't going to shift to 2nd until you get moving
@tonyc2912
@tonyc2912 6 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Law. When coming to a stop, if needed, your left foot is always available to shift gears. Haven't you ever downshifted and all of the sudden needed another gear, like 2nd? If you rode a motor at slow speeds all the time in city traffic you would realize the benefit. Its training the left foot to always be available on the left floorboard near the shifter. That's the way my PD trained. Been riding for 20+ Years on police motor and over 40+ years overall. Not saying that others are trained differently, LOL, I also think they trained us all that way to look uniform during parades and events. All motor cops with right foot down. Im retired now, and will ride this way until I need a trike. Ride safe
@dh2392
@dh2392 6 жыл бұрын
I put my left foot down. This allows me when stopped uphill to hold the bike stationary with my right foot on the rear brake, clutch engaged in first gear. Then when the light changes I roll on the throttle, disengaging the clutch until I feel the bike start to pull, take my foot off the rear brake and away I go. I fail to see how putting the right foot down in this situation would be advantageous. Also, roads often slope so that one side of the bike is a greater reach to the ground than the other, sometimes dramatically so. Learning to put either foot down allows you to put your foot down to the high side, whichever side that is.
@kennethlaw5216
@kennethlaw5216 6 жыл бұрын
Tony C no I have never needed to. Every Harley I have ever riden is very fast in 1st gear. Maybe police bikes are different? But I down shift when slowing down so I'm always in the gear I need to be. As fast as Harley are in 1st gear if you are putting your foot down in 2nd it shouldn't be down yet anyway.

I think you missed a few key points between the 103 and 107. Namely heat generation, the 103 will cook your right leg and sterilize you in traffic on hot days. The 107 shuts the rear cylinder down (that’s EITMS), also has water cooled heads on the Ultra line which helps a lot in traffic situations with heat. I’ve owned a Road Glide Ultra and Ultra Limited now both 107 and it helps a lot on those particular rides . The 107 also loses some of the character of a Harley especially at idle. It does not shake nearly as much, so the 103 has the more old school Harley vibe. Both are butter smooth once any revs are applied. As you note, power is improved on the 107, also it’s ability to low rev and power out of lower rev range. I can get mid 40’s MPG on mine just taking it easy so more power and fuel economy is nice. Sound is roughly the same, the pipes sound better on the 107 once the bike has a few miles on it. Mine has 25k now and I think it’s loud enough, especially for touring. I also think the look of the 103 was better. The 107 is not bad though not a fan of the massive air box stock, but once that is removed it looks sharp. Overall, the 107 is superior in most every way, and I’ve enjoyed the many miles I’ve racked up with this engine. Not one issue yet.

I think the reason people prefer mounting from the left side is the bike leans to the left when on the kickstand, so you don't have to raise you leg as high in the air.

Motorcycle Safty courses teach to always straddle the bike from the left only troopers mount from the right cause of traffic safety. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I'm glad that someone out there also using the 2" tie down straps. Here in oz, they are 50mm but same thing, same application. I've seen those "Bike Tie Down Straps" you can buy from a dealer saying they are all you need, BUT, BUT, I've seen brand NEW ones fail and have cause damage to a bike, NO thanks, I will stick to the 50mm ones EVERYTIME. Cheers.

I have a 72 FLH then I bought a 02 FLSTC. I sold it and got a 98 FLSTF and after riding the 02 for about a year I was surprised how much more power and speed it had over this 98 Evo. Both are bone factory bikes. I am looking for a twin cam Electra Glide or Road king now.

I never thought about it. But I’ve been riding since I was four. I’m now 57 and I get on from the left. I guess it’s because it leans that way on the kickstand.

@FranBunnyFFXII
@FranBunnyFFXII 6 жыл бұрын
Not really. If you compare production and actual product cost Harley is about in line with where they should be. Sportster is right in line with the yahama bolt, for example. A bike made specifically to compete with the sportster. Sportsters are cheaper and ride better than Indian Scouts. Harley's M8 softails are relatively cheaper than indian's similarly specced bigtwin line up, and Harley's genuine accessories are also cheaper than indian. Ducati, Triumph, Yamaha, Indian, Victory, Honda, ect. When you compare spec for spec, Harley is just about middle ground on prices. The only bikes that are made that have a better real world value are Honda's Fury/Chopper style 1350cc Vtwins. Those a pretty good. But at the end of the day, most of harley is pretty fairly priced overall.

FranBunnyFFXII If that's your thing, cool, but Harley has never done it for me personally. I liked the Rocker but that's a unicorn and priced accordingly. I do like the Indian Scouts but I'd rather find a nice used Japanese garage queen that some guy bought to be cool and was too scared to ride. My first bike was a 2003 Honda VTX1800 leftover that I bought new in 2005 for $8k. I can get a VTX, Raider, M109, M90, or half a dozen awesome cruisers for under $5k with almost no miles. Fuel injected, water cooled, and tons of power. Or I'm actually considering a 2014 Valkyrie for the crazy discounts on them currently and I like the modern cruiser look. Sure... They're not Harleys but I don't care about being one of the 'cool' kids. I'm never selling it anyway so resale doesn't matter to me. Honestly, the whole Harley rider attitude in my area turns me off the brand too. If you aren't on a Harley, you don't even rate a friendly nod. Anyhow, stay safe out there.

Had Honda's my whole life before my current Harley, and Harley's fit and finish is better than Honda. Even BMW uses some chintzy looking components. Perhaps because Harley makes only bikes, and not cars, musical instruments, mowers, audio equipment, etc. they need to sell bikes so they put quality switchgear, paint, etc on their bikes.

The EVO is loved because it's so damn reliable and you can build it up for massive amounts of power and it's still reliable. The shop I used to work in, most of customers had EVOs that the owner Rick built. Solid and powerful motors that he put together. I love the EVO myself, but technology and refinements have come a long way to making things better...but I hate Twin Cams and how unreliable they were if you did any type of motor upgrades.

The mounting tradition is just that, a tradition that came from riding horses as you always mount a horse from the left (because ancient soldiers carried their swords on the left. If they mounted from the right they would sit on the sword. Since I’m right handed, I find it awkward to mount a bike on the right, especially those that have an aggressive lean on the stand.

Police officers usually mount from the right - that way they are safe from the traffic, while the bike is not started. Normal riders should mount from the left - when they sit down, because of the body inertia its easier to stand up the bike.

I used to mount from the left side like everyone else. A family friend, who was also a NJ state police motorcycle cop, saw me do that and yelled at me back when I was 18. He said NEVER use the left side because that's the side traffic is traveling. One day, you'll be broken down on the side of the highway, you'll forget yourself and you'll step away right into the path of an oncoming car or the car will swerve too close and hit you. From that day on, I always mounted from the right side, even if I'm safe in my backyard. And he was darn right! I'm 50 now and I've seen numerous times were guys/gals almost got clipped from the left side. Always keep the bike between you and the cars.

How to improve? Bigger lean angle, decrease weight, more agility while still keeping the Harley look and feel. I love my 05 Spring classic and will never get rid of it but if they could get some better ground clearance and agility that'd be the big next step.
