Excellent review Dave, you really are the gold standard when it comes to motorcycle reviews. I think anything above 200kg should be called an adventure tourer and not a dual sport, but that’s a matter of definition I guess. Anything is a dual sport in hands as good as yours. Gave it a brief test ride recently and this bike is much more offroad capable than people seem to think it is. Cheers from Norway

"Oh jeezuz!.......Ooomph!" That's why we love Dave's videos, the honesty remains despite the editing process. No doubt about it, a desirable bike. It does seem as though it is an Adventure/Tourer as it's so good on the tarmac - comfortable, good handling, plenty of power - but, in your opinion, it's also very capable in the dirt: So maybe it's not a dual-sport, maybe it's the motorcycle industry's first true triple-sport.

I took one for a test ride last week, coming off my KTM640, this thing was a revelation to me. I’m certainly considering the next step and putting down $ on one. Mucho power (more than enough for me), comfortable, great on the twistes, very planted on the dirt, ok the windshield was a bit crap, would like a gruntier sound, but as a long distance tourer with serious off road capabilities…I think it will be a considerable challenger to the market. It also felt so much lighter than my 640, yet I know it’s heavier. Great review Dave 👏👍

I like the Norden 901 more than the 901 Expedition but feel dumb paying the same price for it. Any comments or point of view will be appreciated! I want to buy a mid-size adv motorcycle and after watching your videos, analyzing and comparing the different brands and models out there, the bike I like the most for me is the Norden 901. If I buy it, I would add the taller windshield, gps mount, center stand, heated grips, stronger skid plate. So, now my issue is that with those additions the bike would end up costing me almost the same as the 901 Expedition which has those additions plus a couple of other ones. (I don't need the rack and panniers because I would prefer/need an SW-Motec rack and bigger panniers and I feel I'm not as an aggressive and technical off-roader to take advantage of the Explorer mode). The main reason for me preferring the standard 901 over the 901 Expedition is the height of the bike and that I expect the standard model handles better on-road: I ride 80/20 On-road/Off-road. I'm a 51 years old, 1.77 m/5'9" male. Intermediate-advanced (not expert) rider. Have owned: 1997-2000 BMW R1100GS, 2006-2014 Aprilia Caponord 1000. Any comments or point of view will be appreciated! (No demo bikes available in the dealership in my city nor other cities near me).

So my take away from this is the bike is let down by its suspension and tires and to make it a good off road contender. You’d have to spend a ridiculous amount of money to make it as capable as an 890 that’s cheaper to buy in the first place. I don’t see any reason to replace my 10yo 990 Adventure R that I contend is a more capable bike IMHO with the 901 that’s full of nanny controls. Keep up the great work with your videos! Love them!
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV2 жыл бұрын
Bill there's a management specialist called Steven Covey and he use to describe communication as a bucket set between two people. Everyone communicates into the bucket and the listener only takes out of the bucket what they want to hear. So Pirelli STR are tyres are excellent dual sport tyres on hard pack, dirt and black top. They are not good in slippery mud. You don't have to spend a ridiculous amount of money on the rear suspension to get it to an acceptable level. I've owned two 990s. Loved them. But let's be clear, for a whole host of reasons the 890 or 901 shit all over them. Nostalgic journeys are great but there really is no comparison between a 990 and the latest models. Yes, a lovely bike to ride, that makes you happy. So stay in that lane.
@howlinhog2 жыл бұрын
Mine just arrived April 28 and I've done two short rides. It didn't take long to realize that this bike may well be the best I've ever owned. Fuel slung low and quick shift with awesome power makes for a very fun bike. Looking forward to some technical riding. I'm not missing the 690 yet. I loved the 690 but the cost of adding things like cruise control and a power pod with windshield made me sell it and order the 901. Besides, the 690 had one very uncool side effect even with a Seat Concept seat. It would put my whole groin area to sleep within about twenty miles of highway riding. Imagine stopping for a pee break and being not sure who you're holding onto. I found out that was a serious health risk so that was that.
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV2 жыл бұрын
You may have spinal probs I'd seriously suggest seeing a doctor. That is not normal. And the Seat Concepts works a treat.
@howlinhog2 жыл бұрын
@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Yes, I probably should see a doctor. I can already tell the 901 isn't going to be a problem though. I know that doesn't change any health issues I may have. But the 690 is gone and the 901 is in the garage so no turning back now. If I'm being honest with myself i do more hard pack non technical than anything so the 901 fits the bill a little better. Time will tell.

Interestingly I too have come off a 690 onto a 901. What it made me realise (but already knew) is that every 'adventure' bike is a compromise. A bike cant be great on both the dirt and the bitumen. What has impressed me so far about the Norden, is the beautiful engine (bucket loads of smooth linear power delivery) and perhaps most surprisingly how light weight it feels. The low slung fuel tanks are a game changer, I 'm surprised other manufacturers have not picked up on it. The low centre of gravity allows me to tackle far more challenging tracks than I though I ever would. Unforunately after 4 weeks and 1,800km my Noden is off the road because of a clutch failure, Husky are replacing under warranty but some parts are not available till September. Not surprisingly I've told Husky this is totally unacceptable and suggested they take some parts off a new bike in the warehouse. I'm waiting to hear back from them.
@kevinlancaster57142 жыл бұрын
@@HusabergBill Ouch! That really sucks with the clutch. All of the pannier racks were back ordered from Husqvarna and then I discovered that the Husqvarna part number was the same as KTM. Ordered it from the KTM dealer and already have it installed and my Giant Loop Around The World panniers are hanging pretty as you please. My point with that long intro, (sorry) was that I'm betting the KTM clutch parts are identical also. Maybe even aftermarket. September is wayyyy too long to be waiting.

@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV Roger that. I'm going to see if anything entered the airbox. I'm pretty impressed with the performance of the rear tire that came standard on this bike. When you look at the tread design it doesn't exactly inspire confidence on the trail. But it made it through the mudhole and was able to grip in sections of dirt that brought the front end up. The offroad setting turned this bike into a monster in the dirt. I like machines that are better than me. Kinda like a very accurate rifle. When you miss, it's your own fault. That's the 901 in a nutshell. I haven't bottomed it out yet, so we'll see how that goes in the future.

Hi Dave, another Great Video as usual. The Norden is really growing on me very fast. I think I’m positive it will be my next Bike. Mostly what has me Sold coming from a 1200GS Perspective. Is it’s Agility, how Light the Bike Feels, and the Off Road Performance. I don’t think it would have been possible to go through what you did on a GS, without dropping it a few Times. It’s just so Top Heavy you can’t hold it on a Slow Technical Trail. That is what has me Sold the most on the Norden. I can’t imagine how good the Norden would look if the would have kept the High Front Fender, with a better looking Light and Windshield. But like I said it is growing on me. I think the only other Bikes I also like are the T7 Yamaha. The Yamaha 900, and maybe the Honda CBX 500 maybe. Yamaha really seems to be stepping up their Game, and are really Advancing leaps and bounds, except for the T7 Suspension. Anyway, Thanks for all the hard Work you do in making these Videos. "Is it more of an adventure tourer?" I always thought that was the whole purpose and history behind adventure bikes going way back to the BMW R 80 G/S and perhaps a little before. Not bikes to play on in the woods or to pretend to be a rally racer but to travel distances across whatever terrain you may face along the way. Of course people have been adventuring/travelling on two wheels long before that marketing term was used but nevertheless, but it's only in modern times (70s onwards) we have manufactures specifically catering to that. Dual sport is something else entirely. Which sports they 'play' I'm not sure. 😉 Great video as always.👍🏼

I really wonder how hard or expensive the Norden is on service intervals & maintenance. Also the reliability. My colleague had a 790R (previously he had a 990 SM, a 690 sm and a 990 SMT) but traded the 790R for a Yamaha because of oil leakage issues and he went trough several tft screens, al covered by warranty but he just didn’t trust the bike anymore. Now I’ve had a 990 Adv for about 10 years and 70.000 km. It’s expensive to maintain with short and expensive service intervals but I didn’t had any major breakdowns with it. I never rode a 17, but I know there were recent suspension improvements in the latest Hondas and that is what we tested. If your new Norden is the 2023 model it will have better suspension.

Is there another brand that would be half way for the suspension, quality and price wise

Yes definitely. You'll need to research.

ha ha, had to put that in. It doesn't need much to get that rear over the line and more balanced with the front.

I can appreciate the time you put into the videos Echidna Whisperer! Good viewing, the bloopers make it better 👍 I might be a little Bias, but if you have $34K ish to drop on the top model... I think your adventure ride would be better if you bought 3 X 300 Rally's and brought along two mates for the rides 😂

Ha ha, if you could get them. I've been trying to buy a 300 for months, they're just not available.

Great review Dave, always make a bike test into an interesting story. The bike itself looks great, however not disinflation to the KTM890 I can’t get over that awful engine noise and lack of exhaust note.

If Husky packaged the XPLOR suspension in a Södra Länder the price could be more compatible with Adv R.

Dave, the quality of the filming and editing together with the sound tracks gets better and better. I rate your productions as some of the best content in the motorbiking KZbin world. Well done. As a newer adventure rider have you thought about a book of your favourite rides in NSW. It is really hard to work out where to ride and the grades of different rides. I think a book would be a great seller.

I found it difficult initially. Then rode it. Then thought to myself you could can take these shocks with you when you change bikes and sell them second hand at a good price.

The language that you use for riding this bike in the dirt (e.g., "it's OK as long as you pick your trails and then go slow") is quite similar to comments you made about the KLR650. (I had just watched that one.) But then you say it's underrated in the dirt? Confusing. But wait...if you just add a $9K suspension (what???), all is well. Why not just get an 890R? And agree with Husky's characterization of this bike? Anyway, you guys are great but this one threw me.

I found the seating position canted me too far forward and legs forced into too much of an angle. .. and I'm only 5 ft 7 . Engine good but it's a bit parallel twin ish and a bit sewing machine. Wind noise awful. It does wheelie well though. Suspension was brilliant. Overall I actually preferred the new Turaeg 660. Only road Miles tho. Current bike is a 1290 SAS
@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV2 жыл бұрын
Handle bars have six adjustment settings, I'm sure you could have got that sorted. As for the seat there are two seat heights with 20 mm difference and then you've got the taller and shorter seat foams available.
