I often use Speedtest, both on Macs and mobile devices. One thing to be aware of - Speedtest (and, I think, all the other methods you describe) do use up data! I was in Dubai in Feb 2022 and decided I would use Spreedtest to check the 5G performance, with my (UK spec) iPhone 12 Pro. Result: 877Mbps download, 158Mbps upload. Great result! But it also swallowed up 1.4Gb of data, which given that I was using a visitor's sim with a 6Gb data bundle, was not quite what I wanted....

Few things your missing. I heard no mention of making sure as to what type router your connected to and if it is 2.4g, 5g, and if the router is b, g, n, ac, class. Yes Cat6 is the best test, but as many do not wish to spend the about Mac want to the adaptor most Mac users are on wireless. Also distance plays a huge factor in these tests when doing it over wireless.

Gary - thx for the intro to the networkquality command. However, the info on networkquality parameters is incorrect (at least in Ventura 13.1). Running with NO parameters runs the upload and download tests in parallel. Adding -s makes them run sequentially. -v requests verbose output. -h provides command line help.

Well, another very good tutorial, but .... Some routers (or modems) like my mesh network has a speed test feature. I assume the firmware runs in the mode that is ethernet connected to my modem. This is theory avoids "impedance" introduced by the home network, including the wifi .... just sayin'

@macmost Жыл бұрын
I don't know of a way to do that. Usually it isn't an issue as the speed on your local network will be greater than the speed from the router to the Internet. Plus, whatever the advertised speed of the local network is, that's usually what you get since there's no competition for the network besides what you are doing with it.
