This was really interesting, I just figured testing the piano just meant playing it. Cheers

Marcus, a wonderful instructive lesson, perfectly good for a layman to understand. And I don't mind its length at all - on the contrary, thank you for taking your time to make the video.

I like my piano to be slightly heavier so now piano technician made it heavier by letting the damper get off immediately together with the key. In your video you suggest that this is not favourable. Does it have any other (negative) effects aside from the action being heavier?

This is a great overview of where to start. I have a Bechstein Model 10 #98978 and was wondering where i can get a specs manual that can help for ordering the right felts, saddles etc. I live in a relatively remote village in South Africa, so when ordering parts it can be a challenge. Looking forward to more videos.

Hi Ken, I will allow my father to follow up with his recommendation. however, I think if you are working in a remote place and need parts and literature it is advisable to find a source for tools and parts you can rely on. Without needing to make big orders. Here in the US where I live (Texas), I use Pianotek for large order and Howard piano Industries. These two provide me with most of what I need. In terms of South Africa I know Howard would ship small parts. From the UK Fletcher and Newman as well as Hecksher & Company. Reblitz is a good manual to start with. There are specific literature on touch, hammer toning, restringing. Thank you for a great question, I'm sure there must be some other remote viewers out there. Greetings from Roberts Pianos Oxford, Evan Roberts

@@RobertsPianos Thank you for the information. I have contacted Howard by email for future cooperation and he is very helpful. I agree on the Reblitz manual. It's very accessible for the amateur. I have been considering getting Pianos Inside Out once I'm more familiar with the action and it's servicing, as this book appears very comprehensive. Thank you again for your time and all the good information you are making available for us 'out there'.

In these cases standard principles apply, Using the standard touch weights, and right techniques. As well as feeling for the amount necessary on this piano working one note to establish a template for the others. Evan Roberts

I have a Yamaha C3, and the downweight is about 65-68g. What can be done to reduce this?

I have an old Richard Lipp baby grand that has a touch weight of about 30g could be even less, but here is the thing, when trying to plays softly it does feel light, however when you try to play loudly it suddenly feels really heavy. What would be the likely cause of this? My guess is that there is too much lead weight in the keys which will make the keys go down easier but also at the same time increases the inertia making it harder to move quickly? What are your thoughts?

I bit late respond.. but what you may feel are "wippen support springs". Little springs at the back of the wippen that helps the wippens push upwards. This makes the piano feel very light when you are playing softly. If you play strongly, you will play faster that the spring can react. You get the full weight of the action.

With a different key design, does it make sense to measure down-weight on a digital piano using coins? For example, my piano is a Yamaha CLP-535, which I am using for early grades. This digital piano has key down-weights at between 70g and 90g around middle C.; mostly at the heavier end of that range. Yamaha service technician said it would be a big job. I really appreciate your videos. Thank you.

We do not have too much experience restoring digital pianos so his advice will weigh more than ours. On digital pianos, they are slightly different weights due to action components not being the same, depending on the model.
