I put nano ceramic tint on the living room slide which is the passenger side if it was a car. I didn't see a difference. I was wondering if it was because of the factory tint? Anyway, all my windows have attic foil taped to them and I keep the blinds down on top of that. They hare just normal blinds. I could tell a big difference. It kept the rv very comfortable.
@OurRoadLessTraveled Жыл бұрын
We did this last year in San Antonio. We used clear nano. It blocks almost all of the radiant heat like 99%. You still get the ambient heat from outside, but the AC units are able to keep up a lot better. We did all our windows and it made a massive difference, we dont even worry will pulling the block shade anymore.

So the tint makes the objects cooler like your hand and the table. That energy is absorbed by the tint itself making it hotter. Interesting video.

I love that you do these tests. You try your best with the tools you have, yes you could do this much more scientifically, but that increase your cost and time immensely. Ultimately if you want to reduce heat transfer through windows, even the best residential/commercial windows you have to stop the suns rays from hitting the window surface.

In the house we formerly lived in the front door faced southwest, we had a full view storm door, DW likes to have the inside door open so she can see out. The afternoon sun starting at about 2:30 would be shining in that door and it was very hot. I went to Walmart and bought window tint for a car because that’s the only kind they sell. After installing the tint from the outside it looked like a mirror unless you got close to it. It drastically cut down on the heat coming into the house, I didn’t measure it (because I didn’t think to) but I could feel the difference inside. You could easily see through it from the inside looking out. They’ve quit carrying that brand now as I went to get some for our new house so I don’t know how that will perform.

Bonded=laminated, 2 glass panes (3mm each-ish) with PVB/ PVDF interlayer. Also sometimes called safety glass. I recommend being very cautious with applied films. They can retain heat or transfer it to the glass pane causing it to crack from thermal stresses. I have seen this happen in widows and spaandrel glass panels on buildings.
@kswaynes7569 Жыл бұрын
I agree about using caution with applied films. Replaced a large (98'X54") 3rd floor, West facing window, in Anchorage Alaska, after client used applied film to block the afternoon sun. It was an original wood, 1973, single pane window.

Also putting insulation bubble and pulling shades Down for a barrier creates another issue. It’s called no view and no daylight. Basically your living in a dark cave with no natural night. We did very dark tint. Can’t see in for privacy but can see out and helps keep it cooler inside while retaining your view and increasing privacy. It’s a win win win

Without going full egghead, the thermal conductivity of air as measured in SI units [Watts per meter-kelvin (W.m-1K-1)] is roughly .025 and varies with elevation and temperature. The thermal conductivity of glass is roughly 1.11 to 1.43. So the air gap between the glass panes slows the heat transfer considerably. There are tables showing these numbers for various materials. The science of heat transfer, Fourier's law, is fascinating. I wish Santa Clause would get you one of those infrared camera attachments for your cell phone, you would absolutely love it !! I used a Flir on (one of my many) job duties to inspect substations, MCCs, perform mechanical analysis, and building analysis. One of my favorite tools.

That is what a local glass shop told me when I asked about putting tinting on our living room window. We live in a hot climate, and he said it would make the window glass hotter. He said he had witnessed the tinited window gasket bubbling from the heat.

you should have measured inside and outside temp of the insulated glass in the sun. the heat gun gave a quick shot of heat so there was no time to transfer to the inside glass. test them both on the same day with same sun for a more accurate comparison between the 2 windows.

Very interesting test. Several years ago I had all of the windows on my Solitude 310GK covered with a ceramic film. Like you just demonstrated, I think the inside of the windows get just as hot as without the tint. On another note though, in the winter time when it is cold out and I am talking very cold, Wyoming and Montana COLD, as low as -44 last Christmas, BRRRRR, with the window film there is literally zero condensation on the inside of the windows. I still cover the windows with reflective bubble wrap but like you stated without a seal a cold draft is formed on the bottom of the window from the bubble wrap. In hind sight I wish I would have ordered a trailer with dual pane windows, because the cost at the time I purchased my rv was only 1200.00 more than the single pane windows. I paid close to 1500 for the ceramic tint. I also notice a huge amount of thermal heat transfer coming from the front cap on the 5er, very hot in summer and very cold in winter, makes me wonder if there is actually any insulation under the cap.

Wonder what would happen if mirror tint is used
@VH19846 ай бұрын
While it is true that ceramic tint causes the glass to become hotter - due to its absorption and reflection properties, this does not translate to more heat entering the RV. The opposite is true: by blocking and reflecting the heat, ceramic tint helps to keep the interior cooler, making it an effective solution for managing heat in hot climates...like Texas. While the glass is hotter, the overall result is a cooler interior environment, which is the primary goal of using ceramic tint.

Very “cool” experiment. I would assume if you don’t already have dual pane windows, it would be cheaper to add a second AC, assuming you have the wiring and cut out than replacing all of your windows.
@scottouellette5354 Жыл бұрын
A small suggestion would be to measure the glass and object with a thermocouple because IR temp reads have weird issues with reflective objects. Also it would be cool to see the temperature delta on say the table between a spot shaded by the tint a spot next to it that isn’t.

For an RV this isn't practical. The best thing is to block the sun from hitting your windows at all. Exterior shades, shutters, or a covered patio.

So shutters, exterior shades, and a portable covered patio IS practical to haul around in an RV? I use relectix covers on the inside of the windows which does help but also blocks being able to see out also.

Conduction vs Convection vs Radiation If you are not considering the difference in the effectiveness of heat transfer, and especially how we perceive heat (since we are self cooling), then you are only enforcing your own assumptions instead of trying to prove something scientifically.
