Well, as violinists we don't use a particular tuning system, anyway. What we play is closest to just temperament, playing what gives nice ratios depending on the context. We aren't limited by frets of fixed keys. We play what's in tune with the passage itself. The Ancient Greeks went crazy trying to make this stuff work out, but unfortunately there's no perfect solution.

I agree with this video. Equal temperament is by far and away the most practical tuning for an instrument that is played in different keys. I do wonder, however, if a just intonation could be made to work with modern electronic instruments if the tuning dynamically adapted, while being performed, to modal changes in the music? It might be instructive to analyze the frequencies of an very good acapella group as they sing tight harmonies. Once you have an untempered instrument, like the human voice, you can make any frequency you like, particularly if you are not trying to match a tempered instrument. Do acapella groups tend towards just intonation or something else? How do they respond, intonation-wise, to modal shifts? Accomplished acapella singers all seem to share the trait of being able to listen very closely to other members of the group. The sound of acapella groups is, at least to my ear, quite different to listening to music produced with well tempered instruments. They also seem to manage modal shifts without sounding horrible.

So, my bass guitars are all tuned down to 432 on a small digital guitar tuner. The intervals are fine, everything is just slightly warmer. It sounds almost like tuning down a half step, or E-flat tuning. One of my old guitar players used to tune down similarly and when I brought one of my basses over to jam one night, I forgot to retune it back up to 440. We hooked up and found out that it was actually "close enough for rock and roll." Amazingly, it matched up pretty well and it was a little easier to sing to. I was originally a singer for the band we were in so many years ago and I remember thinking it was easier to hit the notes. Additionally, it added a darkness and melancholy to the grungy, dirty music we were playing. Since I had to figure out harmonies, and we were playing covers by bands that detune similarly themselves, it helped us get a dirtier sound. AIC used a lot of flat harmonies anyway, so did Soundgarden and Billy Corgan messed with his tuning as well. It even worked well for Jane's Addiction songs. Many popular bands get their distinct sounds from alternative tuning and when you tune down 8 hz it's sonicly like tuning down what we call a "half step" or tuning the guitar to E flat. Tony Iommi and Frank Zappa did a lot of this type of thing and the Seattle bands got it from their lesser known punk contemporaries like the Melvins and the Dwarves.

If it was the same, all of these rock entertainers and musicians would do it, so once again, you are drunk on your own bullshit logic. I don't know any rock musicians who play with a damned capo. It takes notes off the fretboard so it's limiting. I do know that these same musicians who never use a fucking capo have multiple guitars being handed to them in various tunings, sometimes the same exact make and model of guitar. Please stop needing to push your over-educated theoris on people when you know damned well they work much differently in actual practice... nobody wants to limit their fretboard unless they are playing folk music consisting of less chord choices. I tried listening to a few harsh metal songs I like in 432hz and I swear it lost all of its BITE! Some songs did sound clearer, with less distortion maybe, (which worked better with more melodic songs,) but it's that abrasive feeling I get when listening to metal that I love, when I need to channel my anger. This is going just by the vids on youtube claiming to be songs converted to 432hz. Some pop songs do sound easier to listen to at 432, smoother, not as sluggish as the original. But 432hz is definitely not for all music. Either way, it would be awesome to see more musicians step out of these established comfort zones and play around with tuning and weird combinations.
@just--harry Жыл бұрын
As those 432 conversions do just slow everything down, every instruments attack would be a little slower too which probably contributes to less bite

I noticed on a 432 vs 440 cymatics comparison video using sand with tones that the 432 tones and shapes appeared slightly softer and more free-flowing, compared to the 440 which appeared brighter and more rigid (sharper, I guess). It makes sense that different frequencies have their place depending on what is being expressed
@MrBuzzzzz27 күн бұрын
Um, metal music is designed to make people angry. That's why 432 took away its bite. You're backing up what we are saying, 440 is anxious and angry and 432 is serene. Metal heads have not yet evolved to a liking of serene, they enjoy all things negative.
@selenecelestial549827 күн бұрын
@MrBuzzzzz Lol, metal doesn't *make* me angry. The heavy drumming and tones soothe my anger at times, I also don't have to be angry to enjoy the melodic aspects of metal. But if I'm already angry and want a release for those pent up feelings, sometimes vibing with like music actually gives me the creative fuel I need to channel those heavier emotions into my own creative projects. It can also be exciting, like when you watch and listen to a loud thunderstorm that that makes you feel on edge even though you know you'll be okay. We aren't expecting the storm to be softer because it is what it is. There are also huge variations in the metal genre, some of it actually quite lovely, symphonic. It has definitely evolved over time. But it will always be a LOUD type of music, which is fine. If you were truly "spiritual," you would know that intense drumming, etc, can be very healing. Being into metal has not impacted my spirituality. Your judgement is repugnant. I still receive messages from spirit despite all the metal. 😜 Edit to add: been hanging out with metal heads at gigs for years. They are some of the kindest, well mannered down to earth people I've met. Many of us also enjoy many other genres of music. The idea that only 432h is acceptable is really limiting. I'm not convinced that any specific frequency is good or bad. It's the effect it has. Honestly, some of the most triggering music for me has been a lot of the mainstream crap. Can't go to clubs, they make me depressed. Metal gigs though! 🤘😁🤘

Adam, there's one important temperament that you are overlooking. It's called the Equal Ratio 432 Temperament (or ER-432). It works on the philosophical idea that all frequencies should be equal, tied in with the mathemusical idea that ratios should be as simple as possible. C = 432 (1/1) C# = 432 (1/1) Db = 432* (1/1) D = 432 (1/1) D# = 432 (1/1) Eb = 432 (1/1) E = 432 (1/1) E# = 432** (1/1) Fb = 432** (1/1) F = 432 (1/1) F# = 432 (1/1) Gb = 432 (1/1) G = 432 (1/1) G# = 432 (1/1) Ab = 432 (1/1) A = 432 (1/1) A# = 432 (1/1) Bb = 432 (1/1) B = 432 (1/1) B# = 432** (1/1) Cb = 432** (1/1) *Note the syntonic comma of 0Hz, divided carefully by 1 for each enharmonic equivalent. **Note that in this system, not only do you need to tune the normal enharmonics individually, but also notes that are technically enharmonics but usually irrelevant because they don't normally turn up.

In Iranian music (and maybe some other countries in the Middle East as well), we regularly tune our instruments a little flat or sharp (half tones, whole tones and also quarter tones) for different styles or just for transposing a song without making it different for the player. And guess what! We don't make it a big deal. As long as the ratios stay the same, it really doesn't sound different to the untrained ear.

To be completely honest though, aside from all of the metaphysical perspectives of it, I will say that 432hz genuinely makes an improvement to the way music sounds. The bass hits deeper, the treble sounds more balanced, and the highs sound more tamed. Drums thunk more. Rock and metal sounds heavier. Vocals sound a bit more angelic. Listening to Mozart in that frequency was wonderful. For some reason it kinda tends to touch the notes of the song a bit better. Overall it sounds more balanced and more natural, and using speed conversion to slightly slow it down to tune it to 432hz brings a more “open” and looser feel and makes the finer details of the song a bit more noticeable. Changing it back to 440 just doesn’t really hit the same and not quite as pleasing. I tuned my guitar in 432hz and I play in drop C# and it feels like it has more sustain and a bit more resonance. All and all I will say that this can definitely be a great idea for people to try out if they’re looking to give their music an enhancement. But I’m just saying this because I’m a music snob and an audiophile

@@johnnyd6953 because of how equal temperament works, 432 equal temperament is basically a 440 equal temperament vinyl (tape?) played on a turntable that is 2% slower than it should. I can't imagine those 45 rpm turntables where perfectly on the money, and a few percent variation seems plausible, so would make sense why you'd associate it with old times stuff.

but there is something "magical" (beautiful under math and physics) about perfect ratios. almost all the music you hear is not in perfect harmony. in order to transpose any piece of music, the notes must be equally spaced into 12 intervals (just intonation) to make an octave. tuning a guitar is especially "troublesome"... if you're OCD about it. On the other hand, a specific (mis-)tuning on a given recording might even sound (statistically) objectively better to its core audience.

Dude. U just get your tuner. Calibrate it to 432hrtz. Most tuners will only go to 433hrtz. And everything sounds the same. He's just talked about the factor 9 thing. Which is a very deceptive move on Adams behalf. He must be in one of those secret "gentle man" clubs. If you know what I am saying. Like masonics. The secrets of sound and vibrational curses. Man's number the ratio of 0 to 0.666 to the octave

It's not bad frequencies it's only bad frequencies for the music you're choosing to use the music you're choosing to use was probably written with a 440 tuning so you got to find music that was written with the 432 that music will go with the 432 tuning better because that music was written with that tuning you're using music from 440 and trying to apply it to music to 4:32

It's because he tuned differently each note. He should have tuned the whole piano only by changing A refference note pitch from 440Hz to 432 Hz. If you tune any instrument's refference A note with different pitch , any instrument that is acoustic, electric or digital, then everything will come out perfect . The key or keys he used were really dissonant as well after weirdly changing each note. It is not guaranteed that he didn't do that on purpose . All you have to do is to lower the whole pitch and A refference note by 8 Hz. It's that simple.

Your descriptions of the other tuning systems was very charitable. I don't know if it comes into this or not, or how it plays out mathematically, but I've been told by a piano tuner that the tuning on a piano is actually a big fudge. As in the very high notes and the very low ones are not really where they should be so that they sound better when played against notes in the middle. So I've heard.
@mercster Жыл бұрын
I've heard the same about guitars... they can't really be in complete tune, but that's just the way it works out.

To be absolutely ideal, a different custom scale can be designed for specific pianos. I learned this from a good friend of mine who was a phenonenal piano technician (dead of covid 😢). The issue is inharmonicity in the strings, which is at its worst in smaller pianos, best in 9 ft grands, which are pretty true harmonically(have the actual proper sounding length for all the notes) and need less fudging to get the harmonics all sounding good together. Oddly, in situations where 2 pianos are used together in duets, everything is fine if the 2 are the same size, but if not, the tuning has to be coordinated between the 2, and a compromise tuning designed that is as close as possible to the ideal for both.

'Precise Temperament Tuning' is a geometrical approach to music temperament replacing the Just Intonation's Major Third interval (1.25 or 5/4) with 1.26. In this approach, the MINOR (3rd) interval FALLS (from 1.2 to 1.19) and the MAJOR (3rd) interval LIFTS (increasing from 1.25 to 1.26)

Hertz = unit for a frequency, the same way kilometers are for a distance or grams for a mass. The way music works is that whatever instrument you have emits a bunch of vibrations. Those vibrations happen at a certain speed that depends on how your instrument is tuned, and that speed is the frequency of a note. For example, if you tuned a guitar and made the cords looser, they'd have less strain on them, so for the same strength that you'd put into a note, they'd move more, and they'd move slower. Because of that, the sound is lower (and deeper). If you made the cords tighter, with a higher strain, the cord almost wouldn't move, but very fast; it'd make the sound higher. That's the basic idea behind it. Expressing it in Hertz makes it really easy to quantify music, and it also allows to apply the same frequencies to any instrument, making sure that they're tuned together (rather than telling you "tune your guitar by 4 centimeters up on your A string, and you pianist you figure it out"). It's just a convenient way to express music :)

Trying to find a "nice-looking" frequency makes absolutely no sense because Hertz is a unit that designates per second, and a second is a completely arbitrary amount of time. Nothing about a second has some cosmic meaning. The same logic can be applied to the numbers - we use base 10 for our numbers probably because we have 10 fingers. Numbers that look "bad" in our system could look good in others, and vice versa.
@chrisyfrisky5 жыл бұрын
Some people advocate for base 12, because it's divisible by 2, 3, 4, and 6, while 10 is only divisible by 2 and 5, and we don't encounter 5 that much but encounter 3, 4, and 6 a lot more. And they also say base 12 is more intuitive to learn.

Eh? It is only humans who apprehend time passing and divide it up into arbitrary numbers, the better to alleviate boredom. What, for example is inherently cosmically profound about dividing the circuit of the Earth around the Sun by the daily rotation of the Earth? No other planet we can identify has the same relationship of its day to its year. So since we are picking systems based on things we invented called 'numbers', we might as well pick them to be useful, understandable and teachable. Hertz as a unit of frequency meets those modest tests.
