Thought I was the only one with an interest in old light bulbs. The bulb i use in my ceiling fan is nearing a century old and was used in a traffic signal in the 1930s in Ottawa. Normal bulb, colour came from the lenses, as with signals now that aren't LED.

nah :3 We lighting furs pop out through the cracks on occasion. in my case I have an alt channel that's dedicated to my plasma powered antics.

@@CorenikWolf Especially now because a lot of municipalities are replacing their incandescent traffic signals to cut down on energy usage and the costs involved to re-lamp them when one fails. Even new incandescent signal lamps will start getting hard to obtain soon.

Those old mercury lamps are stupidly reliable. They don't explode or kill their control gear when they fail, they just get progressively dimmer and dimmer until they can no longer start due to how much sputtering occurs within the arc tube. For that point to be reached too they need to have been in service far beyond their rated service life. I have a few in my fairly small collection. a couple 50w, 80w, a couple 125w (of which one's a blacklite), a couple 250w (one standard and the other's a reflector type) and a 400w blacklite plus all the running gear to make them work. My main interest though lies in low pressure sodium as these were as common on the streets as incandescent was in households here in the UK. here's an example from my alt channel where I document my small collection a bit. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJTJnWh-ma-ZqZo I've also still yet to film and upload a video of the 200w linear sodium lamp I have. that thing is cool!!

that's awesome i'm watching right now, i didn't found any low sodium around there.. i'm searching for low sodium lights and clear mercury light bulb.. but it's rare. be careful with poor quality ballast for mercury lights.. they can explode. not common but there are isolated cases this happens unlike Sodium/Metal halide Lights which has zero case of explosions

@@CorenikWolf most cases of lamp explosions with mercury occur while the lamp is under pressure and it encounters a massive spike in current. For that to happen the gear usually has to fail during normal operation while the lamp is at or close to operational temperature (roughly 1200*c for the arc tube). If you're attached to 230v mains though there's not really enough energy in that to blow a cold lamp to pieces. it'll definitely kill the lamp and blow a small hole in the arc tube, but it for a full explosion you either need more current and voltage, or heat. unlike metal halide, which just needs you to look at it funny and it could go boom. I've had a small ceramic metal halide lamp go pop while warming up... those are fun!! Also, good luck on finding yourself some low pressure sodium gear! Worst-case scenario you might be able to look at importing from elsewhere. If you have 230v 50Hz power where you are then any EU or AU spec control gear will get you up and running. If importing from the UK isn't too much of a stretch we still have an alright supply from the fixture replacements that are still ongoing.

It's interesting to see video distortion when the camera gets closer to the light bulb.

I'm sorry, but I see a furry with a bulb-shaped object and instantly worry about where exactly it's going to get 'plugged in'. Love that this showed up in my feed!
