As a luthier and guitar player, I hated the silicone fingertips until my grandfather quit playing guitar. I asked why, and his reason was the pain. In his 80s with diabetes and countless medications, the pressure caused him immense pain in spite of his callouses. I bought him some, and while they did not eliminate the pain, they did lessen it a great deal and he began playing again. Every now and then a seemingly stupid gadget benefits people with disabilities. Most are just dumb, though. The hand expander will cause serious damage and permanently weaken your hands if you use it as suggested by the manufacturer.

I had a woodworking accident and lost just a slight tip of my left pink and index finger. And I had a few concerts coming up. Thanks to these silicon fingertips I could perform, now everything is healed and I don't need these anymore.

The finger mittens are silly for most people but I do recommend them for guitar learners who have gone through Chemo and find their skin is more fragile after treatment. It also may be a helpful option for guitar learners with hypersensitivity associated with ASD.

There are two ways to be able to play guitar without finger pain #1 = Practicing slowly at first and build up calluses #2 = Play the heck out of your fingers and lose all nerve feeling in them so you don't have to worry about pain Edit: And I wonder why my phone doesn't recognize my fingers on my left hand :|

I bought the finger protectors. Yeah. Mistake. But here is something that DID help: you can get a paint-on callus protector for your finger tips! It has the consistency of crazy glue, but unlike crazy glue, it is non-toxic. You only put it on the very ends. This really helped! The stuff I used was called "Quik Callus," but I think they are out of business now. I've played enough so I have natural calluses now, but this stuff really took the edge off. Here is another good thing: it is a thumb pick that has a little spring in it to hold it to your thumb! Black Mountain is the brand. Rock on! :)
@mistysebastian
@mistysebastian 3 жыл бұрын
The silicone finger thingies actually worked really well… I started playing 4 weeks ago and after 2 days my fingers couldn’t take anymore so I got those, you still develop calluses and since a total newbie can’t change chords as fast as you, it was very helpful…. Within a week of using them I had enough of a callus that I didn’t need them anymore. Just throwing that out there for total newbies like me because I probably would’ve quit bc of the pain if I didn’t have them. 🥰

Billie Eilish (idk i suck at spelling ok) is not emo she is *alternative* Google classifies "emo music" as "a style of *rock music* characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics. It originated in the mid-1980s hardcore punk movement of Washington, D.C., where it was known as "emotional hardcore" or "emocore" and pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace." Therefore, it has more of a "punk" or "hard rock" sound, if that makes sense.

While the “easy fret” and the finger caps are pretty much a waste of time, I DO wonder if a disabled person would benefit from them. I can’t off the top of my head think of any particular reason that would need these, but if they give someone the opportunity to play guitar when they’re having difficulty otherwise, then that could be really neat.

I've heard of people with arthritis using the so-called Chord Buddy to play some guitar. The Chord Buddy has a really bad rep in the guitar community, even though it's touted as a learning device by the inventor, and not as a permanent solution. The Chord Buddy allows you to play the G, D, C and Em chords by pressing one of the four buttons on the device. After you've figured about how to strum and have played your first songs, you can extract the mechanisms for each chord one by one, until you play freely. But some people use it as a permanent solution, and this includes people with arthritis. Honestly, I cannot think why someone would deliberately deprive him- or herself of learning how to fret and strum the regular way, it's so rewarding -- but some people simply cannot. With a push button device and a capo you can strum to dozens of songs -- pretty impressive compared to not being able to play the guitar at all, isn't it? I know guitar players can have a real chip on their shoulder, there are people who will dismiss you as a dilettante if you are using a capo. Like such dilettantes as Keith Richards and the late Maybelle Carter.

V-Picks actually make some really great picks. The Phil Keaggy and TTK-5 are picks that I use (and like). They also make smaller picks for mandolin that I use as well. I have a Van Zen which is like the Big Fattie and I don't really care for it either. The idea behind them is that the pick won't spin around as easily while you are playing. Great video. Most of those helping tools are crappy gimmicks. People should just buy some lessons instead and stick with them. You are right about embracing the fingertip pain. You know that you have arrived once your fingertips have gone permanently numb.

When I was starting out guitar, my fingers hurt so much I couldn't play for longer than maybe 30 minutes, so I used medical tape to tape up my fingers lmaoo. It did help believe it or not, but yeah of course I don't need it anymore cuz my callouses are nice n built up :)
@troublingleaf
@troublingleaf 10 ай бұрын
Not to mention, if you do learn with the finger caps, you'll still have to go through the discomfort if you decide you want to play with your actual fingertips. Honestly if you're guitar strings are causing actual pain to your fingers without a medical reason for that pain, or unless you're a child, or you're not playing 13's or upwards, your guitar needs setting up, take it to a guitar tech or Luthier or drop your string gauge! in fact dropping string gauge, might sacrifice a little meatiness, but it's a great tip for beginners, learn on a lower gauge, you'll still build callus, your barre chords and bends will be much easier to learn, it will still sound good, and you can just bump it up one gauge at a time, and your fingers will barely suffer for the increase!
@dinasings

The stickers would be better if it was more like a clear plastic with printed note stamps, but have it strap to the neck like that fret thingy you demonstrated. So like the way you had it mounted behind the strings, but then have it either taped around the back side of the fret board or strap around the neck.

In my first weeks playing guitar I had this idea to make stickers of each note and put on the frearboard, but I never did it. I play for one year now, so I can easily discover the note that I'm playing taking references of those that I already know where is.

While maybe not something the general public needs, the silicone tips can be wonderful for people with disabilities. As someone with a connective tissue disorder that causes stupid things to cut my ridiculous fragile skin, the silicone finger things are great. Only way I can play, even with nylon strings. I'm glad there are enough people interested in skipping the calluses to buy them, this keeps the cost for people who do need them down.

1:56 this is so dumb. If you’re a beginner and you’re struggling with playing long stretches, stop playing them. You’ll get there eventually. If you feel the need to take dumb shortcuts, you’re clearly not at a level that you should be to be playing them in the first place. Practice simple barre chords and go from there.

There's a much easier and cheaper way to increase your range of stretching. Get a very heavy rubberband, and twist it over each finger so that its wrapped in a figure 8 through every finger. Then play the guitar. The resistance on the rubberband will strengthen your fingers and you'll be able to do longer stretches after practicing a few times with it.

As far as the "finger mittens" are concerned, I bought something called Gorilla Tips because I had severe psoriasis for years. My fingertips would split open and the pain would be so bad I couldn't even touch the strings. I would wear them and then the pain would be tolerable. Then after nearly 20 years after trying every product I could find, they miraculously cleared up... I'm thanking God for that!!
