The Joseph code is gorgeous! The missing lining in this coat is actually a plus, it is a double faced fabric, which is finished by stitching the two layers of the fabric against each other. This allows to finish a coat beautifully without seam allowances or facings left visible and therefore looks clean from the inside without needing a lining ;) Its a technique and fabric mainly used in high priced brands as the fabrics tend to be expensive and it requires special machinery. (Max Mara is known to do great double faced coats)
@LizzyHadfield7 жыл бұрын
Thank you SO much for sharing this! That makes sense because all the high end ones I looked at were unlined! xx
@archanapaladugu3687 жыл бұрын
My Celine coat is wool double faced fabric. I prefer this to a lining. Makes it snug inside on the skin given that the wool is high quality. Stella McCartney do some cashmere blends which are divine.

That Joseph coat looks amazing on you Lizzy, the color suits you so well! Definitely way out of my budget but I can totally see why it's the winner. Great testing basics as always!
@bumblebeelasso7 жыл бұрын
As an American, this was a particularly interesting testing basics because obviously British high street stores all convert their prices to USD with slightly different markups and with coats you can feel the difference a bit more. In USD, from least to most expensive the coats rank: ASOS, Topshop, Everlane, And Other Stories, Joseph. I bought the ASOS coat in petite! with a 25% off promo last month (I think ASOS offsets their markup with a lot of American discount codes (our promo this weekend is 30% off)) and I think it's comparable to h&m pricing and quality but I won't run into someone else wearing it on the subway.
@LizzyHadfield7 жыл бұрын
Oh this is a really interesting point - I know Topshop is a lot more expensive over there too. We are lucky in the UK because our high street is so strong and we don't see much of a mark up from the European brands like the H&M group and Inditex. xxx

It drives me a crazy as an expat Brit in the US! I ship to my mums in the Uk and get her to bring stuff to me when she visits the US. Drives her crazy.

Beware...I was at a party a few years back in Virginia and three girls had the same ASOS dress. If you can find twins in the Mid-Atlantic, you can find them anywhere!
@eleo_b7 жыл бұрын
Tausi W | ASOS prices do not even convert to the same prices throughout Europe. I’m Dutch, but if I buy a British brand like Whistles on ASOS, it’s easily 20/30 euros more expensive than if I were to buy with Whistles directly. Same with many Scandinavian brands.
@mathieuberthiaume47357 жыл бұрын
The ASOS coat doesn't have vent possibly due to the fact that adding a vent would increase the production cost, vents are tricky to sew and more time consuming, you'd also have to sew a center back seam in order to add a vent which could disrupt the check, like you can see in the side seams. Skipping on the vent is just another way they can produce the coat much faster and cheaper.
@LizzyHadfield7 жыл бұрын
Ahhh thank you so much for sharing that! It's a shame they have cut those corners when the Topshop one is actually a lower price! xx

Hey Lizzy, great video. I really love that Stories coat. Just a tip: the percentages listed on the content tags aren't "fabrics," they are actually fibers. This tag is called the fiber content tag. For example, all the things listed on the content tag from the & Other Stories coat are fibers. The construction of the textile is the fabric. Eg, the fiber may be made of silk, but the fabric may be a satin weave with a chiffon finish. Just an FYI!

Hi! Yess I used to stagger them a lot but people commented saying they prefered to see more around the more affordable end. I did an All Saints coat last winter and don't really recommend them sadly, so didn't want to feature again. Will try to stagger a little more for the next ones! Thank you xxx

Thanks for replying. Was after someone to justify me purchasing an unlined, no fastening All Saints coats tbh. I'll keep looking x

Hi Lizzy, I just want to say that a lot of high end brands don't line their wool/cashmere coats e.g. Max Mara because it's actually warmer to not line them, the unlined coat keeps the warmth in better!

I would class these as more autumn coats as when the weather gets cold then these won't keep you warm. I feel like winter coats are puffer/ parka coats as these offer more warmth, or do I just feel the cold more than others???
@Nubianette7 жыл бұрын
Adell Baker, it depends on where you live, and how you dress. If you wear layers, and it's not raining, this is fine. Different occasions, different coats. This gives you options.
@LizzyHadfield7 жыл бұрын
I will wear coats like this throughout the winter but with more layers underneath, and if it gets to snowing levels of cold then go for some faux fur. I will do a video with some more practical pieces though! xx
@Adell.Explores7 жыл бұрын
Lizzy Hadfield Thanks for taking the time to respond. I love the coats you picked, but because I'm always like a block of ice so I tend to wear more warmer and thicker coats. I've never thought about adding more layers below the coats as I only ever throw on a jumper then coat. It will be lovely to see a video on faux fur coats I always enjoy watching the testing basics series ☺️.
@Adell.Explores7 жыл бұрын
Nubianette that's totally true, I live in the Uk and I feel the cold quite easily so I always find myself reaching for the bigger and thicker winter coats. The options in this video are great and I will keep them in mind when the weather gets a bit more mild 😊

Wow I can't believe you bought a 10 in the Stories coat, I think I tried on an eight once and felt like a two year old wearing her mums coat. And I'm sure we're the same size and maybe a 1 inch difference in height? I want a coat collection so bad, partly inspired by Korean dramas and how they always wearing different interesting coats in every scene. Also with the UK weather and how i barely take off my coats and jackets anyway, might as well start seeing coats as similar to t-shirts, something to have in a variety of colours.
@sunnyh71757 жыл бұрын
I feel the same, but I do think it's because & other stories can be oversized sometimes, and Lizzy perhaps prefers the oversized fit?
@mimaesthetic25177 жыл бұрын
, even the size 8 of the coat she got was oversized, and I have to wear size 10 in most normal jackets/coats because I have wide shoulders. Even their camel coat that's not meant to be oversized, I had to get an 8.
@aejlindvall7 жыл бұрын
A lot of gorgeous coats - my favorite is the 6 other stories one! I've spent about 6 weeks looking for a longline wool winter coat and it was SO diffuclt. I'm 5'1 and evething was so oversized that sometimes even the smallest sizes drowned me. And it was also really difficult to find one with a decent wool procentage. Found one in the end from H&M of all places, with like 88 % wool, and it a size that would nomally never fit me.

Hi Lizzy, thank you for the video! I definitely enjoyed it. Joseph coat is just insane! The Joseph coat’s shape is just amazing, but on camera it looks white and I can not stop thinking about doctors coat. & Other Stories is a bit too big in shoulders - they hang and not in a cool way but in a “it’s one size too big” way. Loved the Everlane! It was just so Old Hollywood Classic, Doris Day-Grace Kelly-Hitchcock, and I really loved the hue of camel, at least on my computer screen. I totally loved it on you, too. I feel like it elevated you in a very non-edgy, not trying way. If I could afford any of them, that would be my pick for me and on you. PS I will say this though, the pockets seem a little high on it. Did you find them awkward?

Hi Lizzy, I'm just wondering (and maybe you've already addressed this somewhere), do you buy and keep every single item that you test? i think it's a great idea you've put together for viewers, but wonder how you sustain doing these videos if you have to go out and get all these items, especially the high end ones! I hope this doesn't come across wrong. I'm genuinely curious that's all. Thanks so much!!

Great video Lizzy! I appreciate so much your testing basics, they're always so useful and inspiring! ... That being said I have a question for you or for anyone that owns the famous &other stories number you featured in last year's coats testing basics: do you think the length of that coat is right for someone who is like 5,5 feet tall? I'm really tempted but I don't want to be drowning in fabric as you (wisely) said...

Hey hey! OOo so it's a little shorter than the Stories and ASOS one in this video, so saying you're three inches shorter than me I would guess it would come up a similar length as those two do on me. It's a similar length to the Joseph one! Hope that helps xx
