WHO WE ARE
In 2015 we quit our lives in the city to buy bare land in the country and build a timber frame home from scratch with our bare hands, debt-free, with no prior experience. It’s been a wild ride of ups, downs, highs, lows, rain and rainbows, but we haven’t lost sight of our goals and have gotten further in three years than we thought we’d get in ten. Join us as we build our house, develop our rural property, practice traditional skills such as gardening and food preservation and go to even greater heights (literally) of exploring the world through aviation as a new private pilot!

The first FLIR unit I worked on was the AA/AAR-45 FLIR pod used on the A-7E Corsair. It cost more than the aircraft ($37,000,000 was what we were told, "DO YOU DARE DROP IT!"), and weighed something like 2,000 lbs, and was highly dangerous. We had to fill the chiller with freon, and we blew the compressor cylinder head thru the pod and through the aircraft entirely. (we didn't drop it). That was mid 80's. The last FLIR pod I worked on was a kit for the SH-60B, just a black turret that weighed less than 40 pounds and the whole kit price was less than $1,000,000. That was late 90's. Considering everything that has to take place for IR video, I am amazed that its so small, cheap and useable.

If you were impressed, get your hands on a high resolution version (~$24,000.00). You'll be blown away by seeing people behind trees, mudd tracks that have been graded over a week earlier, a swimmers path in the water after a half hour. The list goes on. This stuff was being developed/tested by the US Army in circa 1968-71. Cheers.

One thing to keep in mind with thermal imagining is the temps you are seeing on the camera are relative to everything around it and the environment you are in. This can throw off the temperature readings and probably explains why the temps they were getting are so obscure. Firefighters use it in burning building to locate victims but rather than looking for a “hot spot” you are looking for a cool signature.

I think someone has already mentioned this, still worth repeating. All these devices show the amount of IR emitted NOT the actual temperature. To find the temperature the emission needs to be corrected for the emissivity of the material. Tables of emissivity for common materials are available online.Surface finish has a considerable impact on emissivity. For example anodised aluminium is 0.77 and polished aluminium is .05.. From that one could erroneously see one window frame as being much better than another.

There are different IR Cameras available, some that Fire Fighters use to look through Smoke to see "Hot Spots", Victims trapped in a burning structure, also some that rescue personnel use to look for lost people either on land and/or on water.

The camera doesn’t look through walls, windows, or floors. Go on the other side where the wall that is intact and try to see where wire junctions are. Not going to have a heat variation thats detectable. Your talking movie IR where you can see people inside a house through the walls because they are a higher temp than the walls. IR is good and can detect heat variations to help with insulating a house, watch a few videos to see what it can and can’t do.

As a builder we spend tons of money on the mandatory “Blower door Test”. If we fail we have to reschedule a test, down time waiting, and re-examine fee. During a failing test, they do bring out the FLIR to reveal areas of concern. To have a personal device to use at will during the build to prevent a failed test entirely justifies the cost of this device! IECC 2012 makes this make sense. Thermal bridging, air intrusion, where the insulation subcontractor took a vacation.........

I approve your looking inside to out. Not many people begin there. They should. You should find the post and beam structure that is in contact with your SIPs,, and screwed through the SIPs with the large screw and washer combination, that those beams and posts are relatively cool. Thermal bridging of the steel screws through the insulation to chill the wood. The screw heads from outside should show warmer than the Idaho cold. Also, use the Flir across the garage slab. See both the distance across the slab that the outside exposed portion,, the garage or driveway apron, chills the floor to the inside. Further, your garage floor is in contact with exterior soils below grade at the point of contact with the rail footing/outside poured wall. Chart the temp across the floor. You should expect the very center of the room to be considerably warmer than the perimeter,, particularly at the garage doors. Again, confirm this by imaging from the outside,, the exposed apron under the doors.

I remember commenting on one of these, glad to see you have one now. your right about the garage doors. Another thing to learn about is thermal radiative heat transfer and how it works. lean about the emissivity of different objects (there is a setting in the FLIR on that). It will help you figure out how to interpret. One thing to inspect is the breaker box. It's good to take a pic and you can compare it upon future inspections. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emissivity

thermal imaging was first developed by the FLIRONE for the military so they could see better at night and eventually it was in the military long enough the military had to release it to the public and the USB C allows for faster charging and faster transfer for the programming in the factory and USB C is slowly becoming the new standard as it gets refined

Flir One was exciting when it comes out.. Price and quality amazed even us as sellers.. Then was so many requests for that camera, that factory can't supply needed quantity for all the world and customers waiting.. After time all went in normal rails.. Even i want that camera for myself but didn't buy - decided to wait few years.. :) For Android version - before buying, please verify compatibility and USB charging port direction for Your phone.. In market is phones with socket mounted upside down. Flir One works with these phones but Flir camera is pointing on display side, not phone back side.. God for thermal selfies only.. :D Some customers was disappointed about that.. iPhone version doesn't have that issue..

I got this same device a couple of months ago. Very disappointed with its battery life. It barely runs for 10 minutes before it needs to be recharged fully. I am wondering if the pro version is better? I hate that it changes its color scale all the time so its really hard to analyze the images. Edit: I worked with FLIR's tech support today, they are getting me an RMA for the device. Hopefully the replacement has longer useful battery. They told me that it should run for about an hour on its battery. Hopefully the pro version has better battery!

They are good at showing thermal bridges through your walls. For example, I can see the studs in my walls because they bridge the heat to the sheetrock more efficiently than my insulation. It will be interesting to look at the difference between your three walls with little studding compared to the one with all of the windows in it.
