Clip Studio's method of duplicating frames is pretty weird, but I eventually managed to figure it out so I'll share it here! (In over a thousand comments someone certainly already has, but...) You click on the frame you want, and the corresponding layer in the corresponding folder will be highlighted in your layers panel. Then, if you duplicate that layer, you have an exact copy of that frame. Then you can right click in the timeline where you want to put the duplicate, and select the layer name on the side to put it on that frame :) Hopefully that makes sense and is helpful, because I really love Clip Studio and I'd hate for this one unintuitive feature to ruin it for you even a little bit! :')

Side note for Storyboard Pro: if you are a student (you need a student email and an ID#, if I remember correctly) the annual price is $80 as long as you still have the email. Still far from the cheapest option, but I think it may be worth it if you're actively using it. You also get 21 days free to test it out before you commit to anything. So I'm pretty late commenting this and someone else mentioned krita already, but they hadn't used the animation part of it yet, and I want to expand upon that. Krita is a free art and animation program, and I found it much better than things like pencil2d which are very bare bones for my taste. Krita is set up in a way that feels a lot more professional and has a lot of options and tools while maintaining an easy to use interface. Having been using Medibang Paint Pro up until this point I would say the switch was very easy, and both being free have a very good program going on. I've started testing out Krita's animation vs just single pieces and so far I'd say it's the best free program I could find with the sheer amount of research I did to find anything I felt I could use. I would love to see LavenderTowne try out more art and/or animation programs, especially some better free ones like Krita, or Medibang (though medibang isn't for animation).
@thaliapeters9492 жыл бұрын
One thing with Krita - ymmv but in my experience syncing your animatic to audio is VERY difficult, especially if your animation is longer than like 15 seconds or so. It would go out of sync if you hit play in the middle of the animation, and when my animatic hit ~20 sec the audio started skipping and didnt take the video with it which was extremely frustrating. In general I swear by Krita but I actually found this video bc I was sick of it messing with my audio sync and looking for a better animatic program lol
@jentoons57323 жыл бұрын
There is also a photoshop logo in the corner of storyboarder that takes you directly to your usual drawing program (if you don’t have photoshop), and each board comes with several named layers if you open it there too. It’s very convenient for me because it’s hard to draw directly on storyboarder (I use surface pro)

For Clip Studio Paint: to duplicate a frame and edit it without messing with the old frame, you need to duplicate the layer in the animation folder and then re-assign a new keyframe in your animation to point to that duplicate layer. I just opened up something I"m working on; I duplicated layer 11, and it made a new layer called layer 12, which I could then reassign in my animation as a new keyframe an edit separately. It's a little difficult to get how the animation folder layers interact with the frames on your timeline but once you do it's pretty intuitive! Hope that helps.
@TheBlep3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much
@Possumbreath3 жыл бұрын
@@TheBlep NP, it took me weeks to figure out that's how you do it, I wanted to save other people the pain lmao. Once you realize you can click on a keyframe and manually assign WHAT layer it points to, so many options open up for you! This is also why you can make a new layer in the folder but not actually do anything with it. It's not assigned to a frame until you do that on the timeline. You have to link them up and once that link is established you're golden.

I’m doing a masters in Animation atm, specialising in storyboarding and Storyboard Pro is a really great program that we’re all taught to use. It’s really intuitive and easy to use, especially for a professional grade software. You can also just make straight up storyboards as well as animatics and you can caption each frame with dialog and actions which is super helpful. But it is really really pricy and tbh, you don’t need an expensive software to make a great animatic or storyboard. You can easily just draw out each frame and put it in an editing software to make it into an animatic. It’s all about shot composition, variety and drawing skill (especially with perspective) with storyboarding.

Cool thing about Storyboarder: it has a button on the top right of tje screen that allows you to open a board in photoshop, or any drawing program that supports .psd files (in my case I use Krita). It's very practical and you don't need to be limited by the default tools. When you save the file it automatically creates a krita (or PS) file inside a folder on the project's folder, and instantly updates it on Storyboarder. I haven't really done animatics with it, so I think it would get clunky trying to make many drawings, but it's a solid choice for storyboarding when you are just trying to figure out camera angles and composition. Another cool feature is the "scene editor" space, where you can position the 3D assets (the pose selection is generous, and you can import new assets from programs like Blender) and insert multiple cameras. Then it's saved as a jpeg that you can import into your drawing program as a reference layer. I was storyboarding a short animated film a few months ago, and the program REALLY helped the process, as there was this complex scene inside a subway wagon and I needed to get the camera angles and character positions as consistent as possible.

The thing about Clip-studio Paint duplicating is: You need to Duplicate it on the right where your layers are. Than you Go to your Timeline, and assign that layer to a new frame. You can assign it if you right click on the frame were you want to have it. There will be a popup with all the layers from the folder you are working in. i started using storyboarder now and it's really good. i'm not sure how new this feature is, but you can actually edit individual boards in different programs (the default is photoshop, but it supports most drawing programs, including free ones like krita and firealpaca). there's an easy tutorial on how to change it in the FAQs and then the hotkey to open a frame is CTRL+period. you can only have one board open at a time though (at least in firealpaca). this made the program a million times better for me as i dont like using the brushes it has preset and i couldn't find a stabiliser option

For Clip Studio Paint, the way you can duplicate the frames and edit them is by duplicating the layer of the frame you want to make a slight change to. If the layer you're duplicating is 1, then it should duplicate and rename itself to 2 (or 1a depending on the amount of frames you have already). You can then add that new renamed frame to the timeline and make your changes to that 2 without affecting 1.

9:40 I had the same problem but in a different way. I came from animating on Krita which allows you to just put a point down in your timeline and it will separate your layer in two different ones. And after I bought Clip studio paint I searched for this option and couldn't find it. So basically what I'm doing is just right clicking on the layer i want to duplicate at the right of the screen where all the layers are, duplicate it and you will have the same layer but with a number up, like if it was 3 it will be 4. And you just have to put it in your timeline by right clicking the timeline and choosing the right layer.

In regards to how to copy a frame in CSP: 1) copy and paste the frame 2) the frame won’t show up on the timeline, but it /will/ show up in your layer tab, usually in the animation folder 3) click the little frame button that has a link on it, it should be at the top of your animation timeline, next to the “add frame “ button 4) a list of “layers” aka frames, will pop up, select the one you just pasted, and boom! It’ll show up on the timeline !! (It’s a pretty round abt way to do it, which I’m hoping they’ll streamline, but honestly being able to use the full set of csp tools in animation is a game changer, so I recommend it!)

Blender with greasepencil is quite good if you have the patience to learn it. Been using it professionally to do animatics for over 5 years. Its gotten very good by version 3.6 now. The reason I use it is that I am working on upto 5 minutes of animation in a single file so I need a versatile dopesheet to move around large sections of animatics to get the timings right. Also the ability to slice and move around audio is very important to me. There is a numerical input available for every dopesheet edit. Since its Blender I can also use 3D in my animatics if I need it. As for other apps: Animate CC (not free) is great, Its industry standard in India for animatics. Krita (free) is ok but the audio feature is broken as of now. Its now got layer transform tweening though. It better for final animation for styles that need raster brushes. Pencil 2D (free) is too simplistic and kind of trash for professional work. Storyboarder (atleast the free version) is not good if you want to do anything more dynamic than a blockout. Audio import was broken when I tried it.

There are two ways you can duplicate cels in Clip Studio Paint, with one being direct and the other being more roundabout. Here are two videos that give a concise overview of it, so I'll link them below. The direct method (using vector layers): kzbin.info/www/bejne/oonIY4ePnrmFa68 The roundabout method (using raster layers) : kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZrdh2ech5d5qas

In Clip studio paint You can copy your cell by selecting the cell in the animation timeline then Copying it (Windows is Ctrl + C) then paste it (Windows is Ctrl + V) and it will add a new layer in the right hand layers above the previous frame layer. the name may be a copy version of the layer copied. once you do that you then click where you wanna paste it in the timeline. click in the tools on the timeline of "Specify cells" and click the name corresponding to the frame name of the copied frame. then hit okay. it will then paste it into the selected location on the timeline. hope this helped. :)

I know I’m incredibly late, but I couldn't find any comments explaining the CSP copying frames problem, so here I am! (I’m bad at explaining, so I hope I can get the point across dskjfhskdj) To copy new frames in CSP (as of right now), you need to duplicate the frame you want to copy. What do I mean? Well, in CSP, every frame is saved (kinda). Even if you remove it from the animation timeline (the thing at the bottom), it’s still saved in the layer section. It’s just not on the timeline anymore. In the layer section, you can see that every timeline has its own folder. In this folder, is where the frames are stored. This is also where you can name them, change their opacity, and change their mode (normal, multiply, etc). TL;DR, the animation timeline shows the frames that are in the animation/animatic. The layer/animation folders show every single frame that you've drawn on that timeline. Now that you’ve got that basic idea, here’s how to do it. 1. Boot up CSP, and open an animation canvas 2. Draw something (it doesn’t really matter, just a scribble will do) 3. Select the drawing with the lasso tool, and click the copy and paste button (CTRL+C and then CTRL+V also works). 4. Look at the layer section, do you see something new? A layer simply named 2 should be there. This layer should be the same as the original frame. 5. Now, to insert that new layer into the animation, you have to left-click the timeline. 6. A popup/tab should appear. On the left side, it should show a list of all of the frames in the layer folder. 7. Click 2 8. Another frame should appear on the timeline And there you go! If I explained everything correctly, you should be able to edit the frames individually. I advise just playing around with it, so you can get a feel for the program. Thank you for reading and I hope I helped!❤️

You can copy cels in CSP by doing this (if this is what you meant) 1. Ctrl + C Ctrl + V while selecting the cel you want. 2. Once copy is made go to your timeline. 3. Click specify cels. 4. Select the name of the cel you want to add into the timeline. 5. Click ok and it should work (I'm not using CSP right now so idk if that is exactly right) Idk if anyone will see this but if you do I hope this helps. Edit: also make sure you have the red thingy on the timeline (idk what it's called) in front of the previous cel. The cel will go to wherever you have selected with that

I use clip studio Paint and it took me so long and watching so many tutorials in slow motion to figure out how to copy and paste a frame and edit it without messing with the original frame. I'm not sure if this is the only or quickest way to do it but, you lasso select everything on your original frame and 'copy and paste' it (there are a few buttons that appear just under the selection, click the one that says copy and paste). You then go to your animation timeline at the bottom and right click the place where you want the new frame to be. A box will come up with some options and on the left side of that box, your frame numbers will be listed. If the original frame you wanted to copy was for example, frame 1 then the new frame will have the name 1a. Click where it says 1a and your new frame will appear on the timeline. You are able to edit this frame, without making changes to the original frame. I hope this helps!! 💜

Thank you so much for this! I personally, whenever I actually have the energy for animatics, use Procreate and then export all the frames to Windows Video Editor because it's the only one I know how to even remotely use. It's a bit difficult and time-consuming, but both of the programs are still easy to use and so I wouldn't complain too much about it personally.

Another point to add for storyboarder is that it's link to photoshop. Basically, you have a photoshop icon on the top right corner of the programm and if you click on it, it'll open the frame you're at in photoshop, allowing you to modify/work on it using all of photoshop's tools. Then, once you save in photoshop, storyboarder will automatically update the frame in the timeline and create a photoshop file in your computer. So if you have photoshop storyboarder is an excellent program for animatics. _Signed an animation student who just finish the first version of her animatic on storyboarder

I love these videos, not only are they inspiring and keep me drawing, they teach me new things and new programs to explore. I didn't even know CSP had animation functions, I'll have to explore those later. I do have one critique/request: would you be willing to use the red/blue offset a bit less? I noticed it whenever the endcard would come up, it's a little hard on the eyes (at least for me) though for the endcard it's more subtle because of all the soft colors. Seeing it with the animatics themselves made it a bit more obvious, and it made the video a little difficult to watch.
