I was using Planta premium for 2 months. At first I loved it. I am still new at being a plant mom and that app helped remind me when to water and fertilize. As my collection grew I realized it was kind of limited. For example it didn’t have Cebu blue pothos and something else I can’t remember. The customer support was super quick and added them but by that point I was like do I even need this anymore. I learned how to check the soil and watch for overwatering so I don’t need to bother with reminders. 🤷🏻♀️ I would still recommend Planta for absolute beginners though!!

SO GLAD you filmed this video! I felt like I was using the app wrong. I was at Walmart and found a Cebu Blue Pothos, but none of my ID apps could confirm it, so then I got worried and second guessed my ID abilities! Luckily, I still bought her and was correct :’) Overall, I have been fairly unimpressed with plant ID apps and don’t believe the price is worth it. BUT, I do believe using up-close pictures of 2-3 leaves does help when uploading pictures.

Thanks for this video! I use Planta currently to help kinda keep me on track with my watering schedule and what rooms my plants are in. (I still check them daily but it helps me track the last time I watered and such) Since I usually know what I’m buying before I purchase it I haven’t tried the plant ID yet. I do find that they are missing a bunch of plants in their registry, even a Monstera Deliciosa is listed as a Swish Cheese Plant, however the Variegated version is correct. So it can definitely be a hit or miss. They are also missing most of the cacti and succulents. I would love to see a video on other functions of these apps can offer, such as the watering or fertilizer reminders❤️

I actually use plantnet and picture this. In my experience plantnet works great on all fauna outside, like trees or if someone had an awesome garden and you'd like to know what species they have - very accurate outside, not so much inside. Picture this works best with one leaf or one flower in the picture. It's also great that if you don't find a match you can upload it anyways and the community can help you out 😁 I don't have a subscription, I just wait until I can search again.

Awesome video! I have to say though, image recognition technology is difficult. The app has to be fed hundreds of pictures for every plant to be able to distinguish it from something else. And since all plants are basically splotches of green it's really amazing they can get the genus right! My boyfriend tested image-recognition for his bachelor thesis, it was fun to see the program learn, but it was A LOT of work.

Hi Harli! I have an interesting proposal for ya! I have noticed how names and branding often are different with competitive apps and on a closer look, I find something stupid. Just an fyi on Inaturalist, you first post the photo you put in what you think it is, which you can compare with other species etc. through inaturalist if your not sure, then once you post other people then can confirm your id or offer other suggestions. It is more of a citizen science app then a houseplant id one, so if you did post them make sure to hit the captive/cultivated button :). Anyways I really enjoyed the video it was interesting seeing everything compared.

Sometimes it helped me identify super obscure plants but other times it wouldn't be able to identify more common species even with flowers to set it apart. Have you ever heard of Proplifting? There’s a whole subreddit on it, I’ve never done it myself but here’s what I know about it: it’s propagation of leaves that have fallen off of plants in big box stores. I know that in the subreddit there are strict rules on how you can obtain these leaves, they either have to be picked up from the ground or somewhere around the plant (they have to fall off naturally) or you need permission to take a cutting from a plant. Obviously you can’t just walk into a store with a pair of scissors and go around cutting off leaves to propagate. Technically it isn’t illegal, but morally it’s wrong
