New sunscriber here. Love your videos so far. I'm a long time fisherman, but I do have one question for you. I know with trout, if they are brought in the boat and handled with dry hands, it basically a death sentence for the. The protective "slime" coating has been compromised which means they are very susceptible to disease. IS it not the same with releasing kokanee? I am asking seriously because I am a big proponent of catch and release. Just trying to learn more about this species. Also, thank you for the information on the "hot" boat. I'll definitely check mine out when we go out tomorrow.
@AlanFong Жыл бұрын
Yes if you handle a kokanee it will probably die. When releasing them I don't even net them. Just lean over and use thin needle nose and pop the hook out. You can use a wet towel and they might make it?

Alan, is a hot boat only a worry when you’re using Downrigger or can it be a problem also when trolling for stripers 100 feet back on braided line? Or when anchoring and bait fishing? And if it’s only when using downriggers will switching to braid instead of the metal cable line eliminate the problem? Is it the metal cable that’s putting the negative charge into the water? Or is it the boat itself?Thank you for all your help with these videos!
@AlanFong Жыл бұрын
Only happens when using downriggers and yes changing to braid will fix it. But with cannon electric downriggers the auto stop won't work with braid cable.

If your in a kayak you should use braid cable as it cuts thru the water better than wire. You should be ok reguarding having a hot boat.

I'll look at my GPS mapping and stay close to the river channel and watch my graph. Kokanee are easy to see and then I'll usually put my DR weight right above them. You should be able see your weight as a line on your graph.

Alan, on my fiberglass boat can I connect my negative on the meter to the negative on the battery and the positive on the down rigger cable?
@AlanFong2 жыл бұрын
Yes put the blk on any negative battery post as long as it's not a floating ground. Best ground it to the starting motor battery. Put blk on neg and pos red on DR cable. DR has be down in the water at trolling speeds

Great suggestion! Yes I've spooned lots of koks in Donner and it would work anywhere but late in the season. When the koks get ready to spawn a lot of the hits are from anger n reaction strikes. So I spoon in July and Aug depending on the weather

Just DR, leadcore has no issues and when koks are in 30 ft or less the LC rods will catch more!

Forgive me please, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. The voltage you are measuring from your down rigger cable and boat ground....where is it coming from? Is it from an improperly insulated down rigger setup, or something else? It would appear that unless one does NOT have a positive charge, your SOL? You make a comment about replacing the metal cable with braid.....that seems to me that there would be NO charge at all then? And your switching the multi meter probes back and forth....of course if there is a DC charge and you reverse the probes it will result in reverse charges? So which probe goes where? Also, I thought an electrical charge took the most direct path, which would be from the cable to the hull of the boat? Your explanation implies that some kind of charge "radiates" far out into the water and thereby has a deterrent effect on the fish? Guess I'm just as dumb as a box o' rocks as your explanation of a "hot boat" did nothing to clear up this issue for me.............
@AlanFong Жыл бұрын
The technical reason from where the charge is coming from I can't tell you. If from the boat to DR cable which is wire. Cannon tells you that there electric DR have a circuit board that will produce a half volt off the cable no matter what. I understand a little about electricity and it has made me wonder. But from fishing and using a scotty black box on my friends boat you can adjust the voltage to positive or negative. And if put on negative you won't get bit. So I have fooled around with it for a long time and I use cannon DR s and have tested it many time putting the red positive lead on the cable and the black to ground and it's always .5 volts. Black is always ground. So my friend has new boat and has scotty DR. We were at Stampede and I killed em there week before with Roger. Roger was there next week also and i was with Tom in his new boat. Roger was limited in hour (3) guys and I was not far from him with only a couple fish. So I started to zig zag and ended catching our limit but took me six hours. So took the wire off and put on braid and went back and caught limits faster. So NO voltage off the cable is better than a negative field off the cable.
@EdHeinlein Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your response! I went online to investigate this phenomenon and was surprised how little there is on the subject? Do you happen to know if this only occurs with DRs that are electric or does it also occur with the manual models?@@AlanFong
@AlanFong Жыл бұрын
It could happen on manual or electric downriggers. I guess it can come from the cable to boat creating this charge. Most of the time it's on the electrics
