The experience I have had twice now with my 12-22 splitting 35 to 40 inchers bent the shaft on my pull back arm. A piece will split off on the far side, and you may not catch it, or see it soon enough. It will end up getting pushed by the corner brace on the pull back arm which transfers to and bends the shaft where it goes through the pusher. I had to put it in my H frame press to straighten it out. It also bulges the backside of the square tubing where the pull back arm slides into the tubing. It will split these big rounds, however, you have to watch the pull back arm really close. I love doing the huge rounds because they yield a lot of wood, I made a splitter for my skid steer to snip them into 4 pieces to prevent damaging the pullback arm, and to make them easier to handle.

I have the 22/28 and the same thing happened. Well, same thing in that my pull back arm got bent, but dont know when or how, I assume same reason as you mentioned, running gigantic rounds thru it. It is a beast of a machine
