What a great video! First time watching you Mark but amazing. I’m at the beginning of my journey (38 and 18 stone) and was at Hyrox in Manchester… I finished 465th at 2hrs 13mins. Seeing someone smash it like you is really amazing and I’m heading to London trying to get under 2 hours. You’re really inspiring for someone like me! Oh and simply a great video explaining Hyrox… leading up to the event I could have really done with something this in-depth.

Say hi if you spot me in London 👍🏼. And the amazing thing for you is that every time you do a Hyrox you will smash your previous best. It’s not an event that is massively impacted by your age either (which is handy as I’m nearly 50) so you have years and years to just carry on improving.

This looks absolutely mental but unlike the Spartans, I reckon I could do everything (although the wallballs would be bloody tough). I really like how you haven't taken yourself too seriously and have made it accessible for all. It's good to highlight these things and I'm looking at signing up for one based on this. I'm a typical sprinter cyclist physique (185cm, 80kgs), so I'd struggle with anything too heavy on the arms but it looks like really good fun.
@MarkLewisfitness
@MarkLewisfitness 2 жыл бұрын
The thing that always got me about Spartans was that so many people leave having failed an obstacle. I’m not sure going home having failed something, even if it’s only a bit of the overall race, is that great. I still love them, I just wish there was a better solution than saying “nope, you can’t do that so start doing Burpee‘s”

ok, its a couple of days after Hyrox Manchester 2023. I'm walking like John Wayne and struggling to get up from my seat. You my friend are responsible for the way I'm feeling this morning :-). This video is what motivated me to try Hyrox. I loved and hated it at the same time. Probably one of the toughest things I've done. I came close to bailing on the burpees, that was awful. I got as far as the wall balls but had nothing left. I'd never seen or tried wall balls before but it takes energy and strength and I'd left that behind on other workouts, ha ha. I managed what I thought was about 15 or 20 throws, only for my spotter to say "nope, thats 3 valid throws". At this point I couldnt face another 2 or 3 hundred in order to register 100 valid ones, so bailed. Great day, totally exhausting. Might do it again one day with a little more practice.

Great video highlighting an event I never knew existed. Thanks for the in-depth review! As a late 50's lifelong runner who's wanting to do more full body conditioning, Hyrox is highly appealing. As I get older I'm realizing I need to focus on "total fitness" a lot more than I have in the past. I'm a typical distance runner build (skinny, and not a Spring chicken anymore) so I'll need to take my time building the functional strength for this. The events look challenging but completly doable with some work. I think it might be Hyrox 2023 for me!

Very different feel to OCR. Any random person is much more likely to find something that appeals on this than most OCR events. I love doing OCR but do accept that it is basically a muddy trail run for 99% of it and that does not tick everyone's box!

Great review of a great event. I have to admit I thought I’d bitten off more than I could chew when I got there and was surrounded by Mens Health cover models necking cans of Red Bull, but like you say, once it started all shapes and abilities getting stuck right in! My only slight criticism was the commercial aspect of the event. £75 to enter (which is fair enough considering the kit and amount of amazing judges/stewards); but then £25 for a t shirt, £30 for photos - could start to price people out as it grows?? Great effort on the sled push by the way, that thing felt way heavier than advertised. Keep up the good work Mark.
@MarkLewisfitness
@MarkLewisfitness 2 жыл бұрын
I pretty much agree-I think the price to enter was about right, given what they put on and the online resource that you can use to review your results, et cetera but I am not a fan of having to pay for anything after you’ve signed up. Merchandise is fine but things like photos should be part of the event.

Funny you should ask - I edited out the bit on calorie burn and body battery depletion to save some time. It was 1300 cal over the 78 minutes which works out at exactly 1000 cal per hour and it felt like it 😂. Also my body battery crashed for the entire day afterwards and only really started picking up 24 hours later.

Thinking of signing up for Birmingham in October, what are peoples thoughts on this issue I have? I have had an issue with my knee for the last 5 years, that means if I run or even gentle jog on it., over the next few days the knee comes out of alignment and i'm injured for a month or so. Basically, I cant run. I replace this in my life with long walks, hikes and weighted walks with no problem. None of the other Hyrox challenges cause me any injury issue in the gym. Would it be inappropriate to sign up to Hyrox but walk the running section?

@MarkLewisfitness
@MarkLewisfitness 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting question-the big debate in advance was what shoe won't slip on the carpet when doing the push and pull tasks. Because of that, I went with a pair of Altra superior five - that is a super lightweight trail shoe but it's one I have worn all winter so the grip is far too warn down for trails now. I have only kept it as a fast Parkrun shoe for dry grass in the summer. But it worked perfectly here, more grip than a regular road trainer would have but not enough grip that it was odd to run on the hard surface. In fact, the shoe was so good I will be 100% using them in London.

I hope so-my worry was that it would come across like something for serious serious sports people but there was so many “normal” folk there. And they are almost more inspiring than the elite people. Takes some balls to be out of shape and rock up at something like that and compete with shirtless jacked people running around everywhere 👍🏼

It's so cool to see someone transform from a "normal" person, to someone who cares so deeply about fitness and inspires other people to try their best no matter the situation they find them self in.

LMAO 3:26 Bald Guy deliberately barges that guy out of the way, then turns around and acts like it was an accident. Awesome video as always Mark. Respect!

Congrats Big Man, this was a fun watch. The way you look at the small victories and use that as motivation is inspiring. I’m a time conscious guy myself, I appreciated that in the video.
