I was a bit surprised to see it only got a 7 for carving. The footage of TJ ripping Face of Five at Mammoth at 4:40 made me think it deserved a higher rating.

I rode a prototype of this board, Porto FR in a 163W, all last season and I can say that the triple camber is almost too locked in and not forgiving at all. there is a very niche group that will enjoy this board

For all-mountain -- freeride 6,2 165lb 12 shoe(no park at all) would you suggest the Proto fr or the harpoon and in what size?

I've been waiting for this review. I'm tempted by the 166DF (6'3 235 14W Photons) and can get it on sale next weekend. But I'm also tempted by the Skunk Ape II in a 170 UW now that it's C2X. I'm not really a park guy and more of a hard charger. Thoughts?
@willdykema
@willdykema Жыл бұрын
my dad is about the same size as you. Idk where u live or terrain you like to ride but the burton deep thinker is his new favorite board (he's a lifetime snowboarder riding in Jackson Hole, about as hard charger as a rad dad gets) It comes in the 160W or 163W and is a good prototypical free ride board that's super capable on pow/groomers/and in the air. He owned like 8 skunk apes over the past 12 years and they were his favorite board but he said the more directional shape and more aggressive ride of the deep thinker has made him a much better rider. Generally I would steer away from never summer but that's just product of their reputation in the industry and the fact that I work in the industry. Not saying they don't make a good board or two but so many of their contact points and camber profiles are really bad so I just avoid the brand entirely. TLDR: Skunk ape great option, but maybe look into more directional shapes with camber dominant profiles like the deep thinker unless you really want to ride a lot of switch. (Korua TF is a great board too)

@@willdykema I'm in Tahoe for the most part, but go to roadtrip to the PNW or Salt Lake/I70 Colorado. I get a bunch of days in and like variety: mainly Jones or Lib boards over the last few years. The Deep Thinker reminds me of a 2017 Jones Hovercraft that I still have. I'm looking to see what the UltraWides are about instead of getting a custom Donek.

I’m at the same stats as you, but hover around 205lbs, and shopping for my next board. This board is at the top of my list right now, in 162DF. I’m really after that 28.5cm+ waist width, because I’m so tired of booting out in my carves. Burton’s Wide boards just aren’t wide enough for a size 13+ to clear deep carves. Have you checked out the Lib Tech Stump Ape? That’s next on my list, because you can get >28cm WW without having to step up to a 170 length board like you would with the Skunk Ape. Also… where can I find the Proto on sale next week? 😅
@aaalllen
@aaalllen Жыл бұрын
@@AdamWolphe I've borrowed a Stump Ape and it was definitely a change to get on edge in hard pack. It was very surfy on powder. I have a 169W Skunk Ape from a few years ago and a 169W Flagship... so a 170UW wouldn't be too different lengthwise. But I'm still leaning toward the Proto FR since I can get a little discount. 3 days to decide and hope that the board is still there :) Sportsbasement in the San Francisco area has a "Snowfest" with each store. The SF Presidio location is on the 3rd.

I’m 6’6” 255lbs with size 14 Burton Photons. I normally ride the 170UW Skunk Ape but I just ordered the Proto FR 166DF. I’ll try to post here how they compare after I get it out on the slopes. I’m an intermediate rider aspiring to become an advanced rider.

@@MrDeklain 156 is the perfect size for my weight (180lb) and shoe size (8.5) and height (6.1). If I ordered a 160, it'd be too stiff for me to load it. Go for the 157x man, you won't regret it. But the board is kinda demanding. I would only recommend it to expert riders.

Banana tech is Magne traction not triple camber but both seem to be able to hold an edge in any condition.
@barrykennedy8507
@barrykennedy8507 10 ай бұрын
It's pretty similar. Circa 2008/2009 Lib Tech came out with banana tech, it wasn't really new tech but they pushed it. It was pretty popular but my gripe was that it was all rocker and it was too loose and noodly. Never Summer followed up with Rocker Camber which was similar but it's rocker between the feet and camber outside the bindings so you get something in between the loose noodly feel of all rocker and the locked in drive of all camber, personally I liked it. For a while everyone had some form of rocker board in their line-up but now it's dying out for the most part and camber is making a comeback. Personally I think triple camber is kind of bullshit, I don't see what benefit it brings to table over camber or rocker camber. Lib tech dialed it in to 3 main profiles at this point, camber, rocker camber and I guess what some call camber 2.0 which is rocker camber but more on the camber side which probably enough. Someone else mentioned magne-traction but that's a different deal. Magne-traction is essentially a serrated edge on the board increasing the number of contact points. Lib Tech used to claim it made ice feel like powder which was a crock of shit, it made ice feel like slightly more controllable ice.
