Watching you with new electric motor. The reason it is sliding when turning is there is not enough of a skegg effect on the bottom of the boat. If it had more of a V bottom it would track and turn better. You could add a centerline skegg along the bottom of the boat and it would really help. Alternatively you could have dagger board you slip over the side. Think of a sailboat with no centerboard. Love the content!

or throw the silly expensive gadget away and row the inflatable...a v bottom boat will need more thrust...still useless compared to rowing in flat windless conditions.

Two suggestions. 1. Mount a stern oarlock lower on the stern - on top that engine mount is too high. 2. Rig up a backpack so you can easily carry with you on shore. Like you might carry a guitar.

Perhaps uninteresting and certainly not asked for trivia, but I'm sharing it anyhow! 🙂If you think of power in human terms, 1 hp (746 W) is actually really powerful! It is roughly equivalent of doing 150 kg (330 lbs) deadlifts. Every second! Assuming each lift is about 50 cm (20 inches)... try to keep up with that for a few minutes! 💪

Pretty cool definitely beats a paddle if nobody steals it when you're ashore! Yeah here in the states as you well know if it nailed down it'll spring legs but maybe over there it ain't as bad.

actually there is a inflatible dingy type that more catamaran tube style (takacat is one mfg there are others) that would work better - the mount point would be lower and directional character is much different. but I like the temo unit. the dedicated battery shape/type is not preferred but maybe okay.

Seems like a nice little outboard indeed! Have you considered going back to electric on the sailing boat? Swap out that greasy troublesome motor for a stack of batteries and an electric inboard that you can charge of the solar panels or motion through the water?
@samholmessailing
@samholmessailing 11 ай бұрын
The electric works great for my short dinghy trips but I can’t see it making much sense for my cape dory at the moment. Right now I have an 18hp yanmar. To get a similar amount of power I would probably need a 10kw electric motor. My current solar generation is around 1kw per day in the Mediterranean. At that rate I could only motor at half power for 12 minutes a day. Unfortunately the 1kw of power I generate on solar is mostly used by my fridge, fans, ais, phone, and lights already so I’d have to double my solar just to hit that 12 minute mark. My current battery bank at 4.8kwh would probably only give around 4nm of range in good conditions. My diesel allows me the option to motor up narrow rivers and through canal systems without excessive planning and logistical challenges. I could probably do 80-90% of them with a battery bank that gave me a 40nm range but that would be pretty massive to fit on my boat even with lithium and removing my engine and fuel tank it would add a lot of weight and take up more space. I can’t justify ripping out a working diesel to install a $20k+ electric system (more than twice the purchase price of my boat) that would give me worse range and and take up more space and take weeks to install. Maybe if my boat didn’t already have a working motor and I was going to be redoing the electrical system and solar I might be able to justify it.

I'm debating an outboard electric motor. My two stroke outboard's carburator blew apart while on the water, then the current and waves pushed my slipper 17 into the rocks. Worst experience of my life. Fiberglassed over the damage but that could have gone way worse.
@drewr34skyline18
@drewr34skyline18 Жыл бұрын
Sorry to go against the grain, but it's looks terrible. The angel of thrust is doing more to lift the back of the boat than push it forward. The flexibility of how it's mounted would require the operator to support its movements in waves. The turning circle is massively increased. Ore locks brake easily so using that as the mounting system seems week. Sam I love your videos and zest for sailing. But that thing looks like it's not my cup of tea.

Batteries are cheaper but the power bank things have other advantages. They have built in charge management and inverter output. They are good to capture spare solar charging when your main bank is fully charged and give you great peace of mind if you use them to do one job like run the freezer. Ours runs our fridge and charges really fast. I can also put it in my car for our portable fridge and it is literally a game changer. I wish I had bought one earlier.

You were pretty close with your horsepower guess! You can directly convert between horsepower and watts, with 1 horsepower being 742 watts. Obviously you have to factor in efficiency losses with things like generators, so a 10 horsepower engine will produce less than 7.4kw of electricity when connected to a generator, but it gives you a good ballpark sense.
