I bought the acciao? anvil for under $2 a pound after watching your videos and others. Cleaned it up and used it this weekend for the first time. It is SO MUCH BETTER than RR track I used before. I still want an antique but I can see this thing lasting me for a long time and for the price, it is way better than sitting back waiting to find the antique anvil you think you need.

Breaking myths that’s awesome and it makes sense that the rebound doesn’t make the hammer rebound because you’re hitting hot iron, it’s absorbing all of the energy,great work Roy , but I still want one of those 66lb double horn anvils because I have reach issues with the 150lb hays budden that I have so you just need to give me one because as I’ve told you probably 6 times in the past. I work nights and have never been able to catch one of your live streams in the last three or four years and, but I know that’s how it works so anyways great video as usual but I liked your measuring implement that was cool. I love how the bb just dies in like 3 or 4 bounces on the HF and it bounces all day on the Colonial.

The reason for the rebound test is to measure the anvils ability to return the hammer. A dead anvil absorbs the hammers inertia making the Smith do all the work in raising it for the next blow. High rebound is a good thing. Also, cheap anvils may not be uniformly hard over whole face. A better way to test would be to do 3 drops near each corner and 3 in the center.

Ok, prove to us with simple physics that all of the momentum of the hammer is absorbed by the hot metal. Please account for friction between the hammer and the hot metal, the gradual cooling of the hot metal, and the effect of work hardening once the metal drops below the recrystallization temperature. No baloney, now.

K K could you flatten hot metal with just the hammer? No you need an anvil. And simple physics says that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. When you strike the iron, it strikes the anvil with a force of the hammer, minus the energy that went into the iron. The energy of the iron hitting the anvil is returned to the iron, minus any energy absorbed by the iron, and back to the hammer. The amount of energy returned is much less than the energy absorbed by the iron but it is noticeable if you move from a good hard anvil to a POS cast iron anvil.

I solved the prenunciation of Acciaio by chisling the word off of the anvil,thank goodness the one I got was black not blue.Still like it over a year later.I call it a small german pattern anvil now ,not cheap amazon,ha just saying.Gotta love the measuring device you enginered there .

How would a holdfast work in the hardy/Pritchel holes of the double horn anvil? It’s my understanding that it works by catching at both sides of the hole top/bottom, requiring room at the waist of the anvil for the bottom of the holdfast to go into. It looks like the double horn has no waist, therefore no room for the holdfast to angle

There are 2 ways I test the rebound on an anvil, 1st I take a 1-1/2" ball bearing and drop from 12" and visually gauge the rebound, 2nd is the thinking or momentum blow with a hammer, ya know the one where as a smith you take a couple of taps on the anvil and go from there. IMHO the HF anvil is a ball bearing magnet as far as I'm concerned.

No, that generally isn't what you want. The hot peice of steel deforms to adsorb most of the energy during use so your hammer isn't going to bounce, the more energy that goes into the peice the faster you can forge so a higher rebound is generally beneficial (and surprisingly noticeable)

You are also ignoring the amount of continuous rebound - the amount of bounce after the initial bounce. That shows just how "dead" the anvil actually is. Isn't that a better test? The amount of secondary rebound? What you do do is actually good however.

Wouldn't be some of the rebound being absorbed by the world you have on top causing an inaccurate rebound? Also wouldn't the total mass of the anvil matter and the object it resting on? 2nd law of thermodynamics.

Some people use weld rods to build a new harder surface on to it but you need to pre heat the anvil, at the end ot will be more expensive than get a steel chunk from a scrap yard.
