Brandon. There is an even simpler way to raise the lever of the gas tube. There is a special groove in the pencil case, which will allow you to insert a lever there and turn it very conveniently. By the way pencil case for ak has a lot of functions. Cool theme for the video. I grew up with a grandfather who was an avid (and accomplished) hunter. he had a couple 30-06, 7mm Mauser, 7mm magnum, .243 Winchester, 30-30. Later in life he went to blackpowder because deer season started earlier (he wasn't able to be out in the cold so much during regular rifle season). He also had a large knife collection including the ones he was issued in the USMC.

The idea the ak was based on the garand is fucking retarded when the Russians already had more similar firearms in production to the ak than the garand. When you look at the design targets of the ak, service rifle, medium caliber, lightweight, controllable lower rpm select fire, 100-400m range conflicts, only intended to combat infantry with light armor and minimal cover, no need to share ammo with a squad automatic weapon, comparing the ak to the garand as inspiration is just fucking retarded.

Small addition, there is now an AK in caliber bigger than 30-06. It is the 9,6/53 Lancaster, which is designed for internal Russian market (it counted as smooth bore caliber, which was easier to buy legally. Unfortunately since 2020 Lancaster barrels become rifled in terms of weapons law in Russia). So, there is for instance gun ВПО-221 from Molot in that caliber.
@MasterFatness

Regarding the "biggest" cartridge debate... the 30-06 has a case capacity of 68 grains vs 64 grains for the 7,62x54R and 63 grains for the 8x57 Mauser. The .308 can hold "only" 56 grains. So yeah, in theory, the 30-06 can spit out those .30 caliber bullets with a bit more zip. But in essence, they all have very similar capabilities.

There was also such an option: SVDK 9.3 × 64 The "large-caliber" SVDK sniper rifle was developed and adopted by the Russian army as part of the "Cracker" program. The main task of the rifle is considered to be the defeat of enemy personnel protected by personal protective equipment (heavy body armor) or behind light obstacles. But the thing is so rare and little known that even professional military snipers have not seen them. Probably released in a small batch for a specific customer.

I gotta nitpick that it's Dragunov-based and not AK-based design. However, it's kinda sad that they eventually have shut down the production of 9,3 mm rifles, at least for civilan market there are no new production line guns. I'm pretty sure servicemen don't get those anymore either. Also I've read some complaints about quality of russian-made 9,3x64 factory ammo. Right now large game hunters in Russia either stick to smoothbores (since every hunter in Russia has a smoothbore in his shed, for legal reasons), or pick 9,3/54 Lancaster, .338LM or .375 H&H. Or, obviously, heavy bullet .30 cals and .300 magnums

I guess not everyone knows this but Veprs are made on RPK tooling because the plant who make them were slated for making RPKs only while AK was mostly IzhMash which make civilian AKs under Saiga trademark. So Veprs are inherently thiccer, softer shooting and generally nicer weapons in calibers over x39 than Saigas.

Was able to get a Vepr 54r, 21" barrel from Atlantic Firearms years ago, topped it with a 6x PSO scope (civilian, 1.5m marks) and it had Manticore furniture already installed. Carrying it to a gun show is like pulling up in a Ferrari. I love it like a favorite child. Molot doesn't mess around on making beautiful, tough, well fitted rifles. I also have a 12 gauge Vepr, folding tube stock, and I don't think I could break it if I tried. I've ran it hard and put it away wet many 'a times

I would love for Brandon to really one day work on a project (after the AK-50 of course) to really design and manufacture an AK for the modern day shooter. Not just furniture but features, like actual bolt hold open/release features. That would be sick to think about an AK where something as simple as never grabbing a charging handle or a faster way to insert magazines would be pretty dope. People might point to the Mutant as the thing but it's like it's just an AR with the old rock and lock magazine rather than an evolution of the AK. Hope this happens someday

Not sure if you'll see this. BUT I figured I'd mention according to one of the designers I used to talk with at Molot, that these were supposed to have a larger ejection port with a telescoping dust cover like the Vepr-54r and the 12 gauge had. Which is why the .30-06 has kinda lousy ejection.. We did make a 30 round magazine, we have been out of them for over a year. They are difficult to make because of the length, the center welds are hard to get to, and it required a lot of fixturing to keep them straight during welding.
