Testing the Nokta "Impact" using Mineralized Soil (Part-1)

Part-1, Testing the Nokta Impact with highly mineralized soil from Culpeper VA. We placed a Civil war Minie ball and button under a container with 4-5" of soil, testing various modes of operation with the Impact.
UPDATE FROM MANUFACTURE After Viewing Video:
Using the VLX 1 mode: Please note that VLX 2 is deeper than VLX 1 …and when swinging in one of these discrimination modes, please swing the coil little faster. (Factor DISC Setting is 0 for both VLX Modes).
In the DEEP mode - please decrease your discrimination setting (DISC) and try again… (We used the Factory Default setting of 10 for DISC).
We will test again lowering DISC down to 0 & 3.
In Part-2 we test using a gold Nugget & a small Vile of Flour gold in the 14khz mode as well as the 20khz mode (Flour gold only).

What was the Nokta showing as the target ID on the Minie ball?

Air between the mineralized soil and the search coil should not be counted as actual depth detected. I am sure if you place the target beneath the 8-12" of the same soil matrix, you would get a slight indication that a target existed or none at all. Basically the Impact has excellent detection using the All metal modes just like many other detectors. Switch to a Disc mode and you may see the Impact fail to detect a target in such soil, just like many other brands of detectors in disc mode. To do your test properly the target has to be under 8" of soil with 1" or less air gap, not 5" of soil plus 4-6" of air gap. I own a Nokta Impact with 4 coils and am a Canadian field tester for it. Its a fantastic detector overall, favorite to use to date. It goes deep and handles most soil conditions. Anyone who buys an Impact will be pleasantly surprised by its performance. A silver coin in lightly mineralized soils would read high numbers, in bad soils as low as iron numbers. And some iron could wrap around into the high silver numbers. You would be digging lots of junk thinking its silver etc. and passing up on silver etc. thinking its iron or a junk target. I found this happens with many detectors in disc mode. Only solution is hunt in all metal mode, and dig all targets when relic hunting. I haven't hunted at Culpepper, so can't give any answers on how the Impact will be affected there. I have hunted red clay mineralized soils in the Kennesaw Georgia area, when we lived there for a number of years. I only found two detectors at that time, I got along with. Thanks for all of your links and info! I will definitely check out your video. There are so many possible combinations of settings & techniques, we only covered a few. I am personally interested in purchasing the Notka after these few tests. I agree that a real test would be in at least 8 inches of soil, but it was very interesting to me to see the numbers change so greatly with just 4 inches of heavily mineralized soil verses low mineralized soil. Thanks again & we need to wait till spring to test out in Virginia. Hopefully we will have some more time to get to know the detector a bit better. Tony
