My second Gear Review episode. In this episode, I'm reviewing the new camera from OM System, OM-1. I borrowed this camera from my father for a 3-day hands-on field test, expending over 1 week. In this review, I'm only focusing on the camera's bird-focusing capabilities.

Great video, thank you. Up until last Friday I owned the Canon R5 plus Rf100 500. Last Friday I swapped it for the OM-1, 300mm and 2 other lenses. The main reasons were... cost of additional lenses, weight and I wanted more reach. I had only had a few hours to check it out but I am very impressed so far. Obviously the R5 images have a lot more information because of the 45Mp to 20Mp. But I can live with that. I had a Panasonic G9 before that. If the OM-1 had come put before I bought the Canon (February) I would have gone straight to the OM-1. Thank you for your take on it.

Same, If OM1 had come earlier I would maybe not invest that heavily into Canon RF. It seems you were in the same thought process as me earlier. Moving away from MFT to FF. I also had the G9, and I enjoyed it a lot! Glad you enjoyed the review :)

What a strange decision.. you are not getting any more "reach" at all. Put the R5 in crop mode (1.6x) and with the 100-500 you're getting 18 megapixel files at 800mm "equivalent" Vs 600 with the Olympus set-up. Plus having a zoom is so much more versatile.

@@justinholding02 I know what you mean. The R5/lens combo was wonderful. But there were two other issues... the weight and cost. I found it was a struggle carrying it for more than 15 minutes. And the cost of additional RF lenses was prohibitive. For the partex money I got for the R5 + lens, I got then OM-1, the 300mm f4 pro, 7- 14 f2.8 pro, 60mm f2.8 macro, 2x converter and 40 - 150 f2.8 pro. (Including a local photo show 10% off offer plus 3x £175 lens cashbacks)

Same here. I owned an R6, a lot of glass, a lot of heavy prime lenses from 1.2 to 1.8 and different zooms. I sold all for the OM-1 and a few lenses. Best decision. So much less weight to carry around, sharp, weatherproofed like nothing else. Great camera! Makes fun to use.

I preferred the OM 1 still shots here....I enjoy seeing less background blur. While you could close the aperture a bit on the R5 for similar results. I too switched from Canon to OM recently and never regretted the results I get now. The Pro Capture and ibis on the OM is just fantastic for birding. The cost and size is icing on the cake! Great video...Thanks

Beautiful images from both cameras and the OM-1 looks like a nice camera. I own an EM-1 mk iii and 300mm f4 and i like it very much and to my eyes it produces very sharp images. I could neither afford or be able to carry a full frame equivalent kit to mine but when the om-1 is readily available i will consider it for certain.

I sold my R5, EF600mm f4 mk2 and RF800 f11 four weeks back. The 600mm was ten years old and the EF mount is now obsolete. I was also fed up with carrying 5kg of lens around with me so I decided to trade it. In the 5 years I owned it the lens lost £800 as the values have gone up of used big whites. The R5 I lost £900 in 2 years and I broke even on the RF800 as it was a grey import. My plan was to move to an R7 and RF100-500 f7.1. For BIF in an English winter that combination could be a nightmare as it's far from ideal at f7.1 and the disappointing sensor tech in the R7, non weatherproof plastic construction, non existent buffer, noisy mech shutter etc. made me look elsewhere. I purchased an OM-1, 300mm f4, 100-400mm f5-f6.3, MC14 1.4x extender and I've the 150-400 f4.5 1.25TC on back order. I'm really enjoying my OM-1 and the AF is nearly as good as the R5 imho if not as good as. There's no blackout, no discernable rolling shutter, good iso noise performance probably better than the R5 and many other features such as ProCapture that best the R5. The only thing I miss is the MP but I'm used to that now and shoot and crop accordingly. My two lenses, OM-1, 2 spare batteries and cleaning kit fit into the smallest LowPro backpack. I can walk for miles with this kit and get shots I wouldn't have got with my R5 and Canon lenses. It's re energised my photography

Lovely to hear, if I ever get to the Olympus 150-400mm, I might be tempted to jump back to OM and m43. The 400mm f/2.8 with one camera alone weights a lot, even worse if I want to bring some extra lenses or camera body. So I really don't hike too far with this, unless I can drive half the way or something :) Thanks for sharing!

Steve, wait until you find out what the ProCaptureSH2 mode can do for you. Spoiler alert: up to 70 frames pre buffered at 50 fps RAW, bird eye AF and tracking fully functioning, never again miss a takeoff 😊. I made some awesome kingfisher takeoffs, never possible without that. The 150-400 is awesome and weighs only 1.8 kg (the advantage of a Kevlar barrel), fully weather sealed like the OM-1 itself. In combination with the OM-1 + battery only 2.4 kg system weight. To be honest, I also have the R3 with the EF 600 mk 3 (on adapter). I can’t understand, why Canon didn’t yet upgrade the R3 firmware and added RAW burst mode and Pre-shooting like it is available in the R7 (red menu number 6), the equivalent to ProCaptureSH2. The R3 is the solely Canon having a stacked BSI sensor like the OM-1 and predestined for that function. Not the R7, still having no stacked sensor and for that rolling shutter, Pre-shooting only works using the electronic shutter. You will be very lucky if you ever get the 150-400. Generally: If the bird is close enough to fill at least ⅔ of the frame, the 2x crop factor and its reduction of blur is no longer an issue, the bird in the example here in the video is pretty far away 😉. The lens grip of the 150-400 is also Arca-Swiss ready, can’t understand why Canon and Nikon fail totally on that item.

Thank you, yeah KZbin really butcher the quality on this one, I think its because its so lengthy. Not sure, but the rendered version on my computer has better video quality for sure. I was quite impressed with the new resolution on OM-1, so its quite the upgrade from previous cameras, so it does put up a fight against full frame, but in the end full frame always has better resolution than MFT.

This was really great! I recently went on a trip with my e-m1 mark iii and a sony a7r3. Definitely more dynamic range and of course megapixels out of the Sony; but some of my favorite pics are with the Olympus. I prefer holding the Olympus too. There are advantages to mft and other advantages to ff, but it is good to know that mft OM-1 punches above it's weight. For my wildlife adventures, the weather sealing and conpactness of the Olympus draws me in, not to mention the quality glass I can get with mft, for half the price. If you like the 35mm focal range the Olympus 17mm f1.2 pro is near the sharpest lens I have ever used (8mm fisheye pro might be as sharp or sharper).

Fantastic comparison!!! The fact that the lowly M4/3 sensor can even come close to, or match the Canon in picture quality is amazing. I have to admit that that 300mm F4 is an outstanding lens. I did extensive testing of the MC-14 with the 300 and was also very impressed how much better the images where. I would say around 1.3X better and well worth using the 1.4x if lighting allows. I now want the MC-20 for very bright conditions. In the past I have found the biggest draw back to using teleconverters was the ability to focus in in low light (shadows) but the OM cameras focusing seems to be getting more sensitive in low light with every generation.

I've just traded in my RF100-500 (and some other lenses) for the OM 150-400 lens. I've been running two systems for a while with the 300mm on the OM1 and when I needed a zoom, the R5 with the 100-500mm. The Canon with 100-500 is almost the same weight as the OM1 with the 150-400 and almost the same length when the Canon is extended. I've barely had chance to try it yet, but I'm so looking forward to using it. I have tweaked a few settings and although I didn't test it specifically, I always felt the OM1 was just a little bit better with the subject detect autofocus. Also, I have it set to C-Af +MF and love that if the bird is against a busy background, I can manually focus and the peaking kicks in - it doesn't on the R5 without switching it to manual focus.

I feel like I get a lot of very good shots with my 1x, and I absolutely love the form factor. I used to shoot professionally and became used to shooting with a gripped camera body. If I get the OM-1, I know I will want the grip also -- so the cost is simply beyond what I can do at this time, without selling off a fair amount of gear to help fund it. I am very impressed with the JPEG quality of the OM-1 -- even the high ISO shot look good straight out of camera. I have a friend who just got one, so maybe we'll go out shooting and I can play with it a little using my Oly 100-400mm. Of course, that might be a dangerous thing to do! 🙂

I'm actually looking into the possibility of losing my G9 and going to the OM1 so this is a handy video! For me the biggest take is that the Canon images are gorgeous as you can absolutely obliterate those backgrounds more easily which is obviously less easy to do with the OM1 so stylistically if you are more of an environmental photographer then the OM1 is the one and if its more portraits or you have cluttered backgrounds the R5 is the one to go for. Both look incredible but for me cost is definitely a huge factor so for that reason it has to be OM1 for me.

The background being more blurry is due to the 400mm 2.8 lens on the Canon being wider aperture, as well as having more reach than the 300mm F4 on the OM-1. Compare it with the RF 100-500mm, the backgrounds will be similar. 500 @ 7.1 vs 300 @ 4.

Hey man! I've been looking at the OM1 for a little while now. Since there is not a booming used market here in India, you really cannot buy, use, and subsequently sell gear if you don't like the gear as many other people in the west do. You're pretty much stuck with your equipment for at least a few years after the purchase. So I'm being extra careful and looking at all review I can get hold of. This is probably my first comment on KZbin ever, and I just wanted to say that this is by far the best review I have seen of this camera this far! Most other reviews are from Ambassadors, and I don't really trust their opinions as much. But your inputs and opinions were really nice, and I really enjoyed your presentation. Hi, I recommend you try OM1 with the 300mm first. Then you get to field test it a bit before you make a decision, and see the difference with a smaller sensor. Sony a7IV is a great camera, so I think it's a good idea for you to do some testing before you make a choice. There are some real noticeable differences between FF and MFT.
@pentagramyt417
@pentagramyt417 Жыл бұрын
@@TJPhotography That's the best I can do for this situation. There are pros and cons of both set'ups. Even if you check prices, OM1+300mm vs A7IV+200-600mm is literally the same. It's like... the cost of sony lens is the same as OM1 body, and A7IV is a cost of 300 mm f4 lens. If the price would be 25-30% less overall there would be definitely more users of MFT and I would head this way. But since I got already the lens and I am a few steps before investing in Sony FF it makes me weird feeling that going back to MFT could be (but doesn't mean will be) a bad move. I will try to test that in the field as soon as possible and then decide.

You need to persuade your father to purchase the battery grip for his OM1 for the next time you borrow it. I am fortunate to own two OM1 bodies; and at this time of the year I have one set up for birds/mamals and the other set up for macro. I purchased a battery grip for my birding OM1, as I find it more comfortable when used with the 300mm f4, both with and without my MC14 or MC20. I find the AF stunningly fast and accurate for birds in flight. I have captured images with my OM1 that I would never have captured with my EM1X, EM1.3, Sony A9 or Sony A7R4. ProCapture mode is simply brilliant, as the camera now tracks the subject. SH2 @ 50fps is fantastic for BIF, especially when there is a short window of opportunity to get the shot. It is certainly not a gimmick, as some would suggest. As far as I'm concerned, the OM1 really is my wow factor camera.

You cannot look at the "raw" file, it is just data. Every editing software makes a decision on how to display that data. This is controlled by the usually built-in camera profiles, which are transformations from raw data to display color space. Color calibration is the process of trying to equalize the difference in hardware and trying to reach a hardware agnostic perceptual equivalence. This is usually the task of the photographer if he/she so desires. Camera profiles usually imitate the jpeg rendition of the camera manufacturer. So all in all, theres not much point in comparing colors and tonalities between cameras really, since in the end this is all determined by the editing/display software. I also think, most editors apply some sharpening by default.

That's true, it is obvious differences between FF and MFT. But the main reason for this comparison was the animal eye autofocus (and that I had access to both cameras at the time). Great review! I really enjoyed it. I am coming up on the end of my week with the OM-1. I rented one which has ot go back in a day. I am a former M43 shooter (Panasonic G9) who went to Canon about 18 months ago. I have an R6 and R7 currently but mostly use the RF 100-500mm lens. I have a chronically sore shoulder so I am very conscious of weight. I use the R6 with the battery grip but I think the R6 will soon be sold. I think that the R7 is superior for birds despite it’s shutter issues. I have really enjoyed the OM-1. My biggest issue is that I can’t use my normal workflow with it. Other than that I have been happy with it. I used it with my PL 100-400 lens which worked well. It seems really solid for birds in flight. I think the AF may be quicker than my Canons. My biggest issue is that there aren’t a lot of quality zoom choices for the OM-1. If I end up buying one I suspect that I would end up with the 150-400mm which, as you mentioned, is hard ot come by. It’s also not overly light. If I could order one and have it tomorrow I still might do it. But I can’t so I will likely continue to be a Canon shooter.
@TJPhotography
@TJPhotography 2 жыл бұрын
I did the same thing, went from M4/3 to FF after the news of Olympus selling off its camera division. I haven't tried the R7 yet, would love to have an APS-C camera, but R7 has some issues that make me unsure to buy. For example the iso handling, the rolling shutter, and the small buffer in the camera. Would you recommend it?
@rreichar1
@rreichar1 2 жыл бұрын
@@TJPhotography I would recommend it. The rolling shutter is an issue but I have not lost any photos yet because of it. I have taken about 10K images.using the electronic shutter. The mechanical shutter is extremely loud so I don’t use it. The AF seems similar to my R6 but it seems like it grabs birds a little faster at times. I do notice that the AF struggles a bit in poor light. I have not found that the noise is a significant problem. I use Topaz as part of my regular workflow and images are useable up to 12,800. The buffer is not great but it’s not a deal breaker to me. I have hit it a couple of times when shooting at 30fps. I have switched to shooting in C-RAW and that has helped. I have really enjoyed having the OM-1 and I think I would have gone straight to that had it come out earlier. I have sold a lot of my M43 gear now so I will likely stay with Canon for the time being. I would have preferred that the R7 cost more and have a faster readout sensor and a better shutter but for the money it’s hard to beat. Every camera is a compromise but have it the extra reach and more pixels on the bird is worth the other compromises for me. You might not agree.

How will the high ISO images be for Friday night lights high school football with m4/3?
@TJPhotography
@TJPhotography Жыл бұрын
I do not really know, never tried it at such an event. But the light source from stadium lights are strong and crisp light source (depending on how new/old they are). But with football, you might want to have a high shutter speed, so you have some factors that will work against you. The OM1 handles low light better than previous models, and can easily take 1600 and 3200iso, but for example, a Canon r6 can take way higher iso than that. If you don't own previous equipment, I recommend Canon R6 with a telezoom over an OM1 with telezoom in this particular situation. Hope it helped.

R 5 is 45 MP camera OM-1 is 20 MP. That's why you don't get the same distance when you crop the images. If you want to compare the details of the two cameras when shooting from almost the same distance, you should shoot 300mm with the Olympus and 400mm with the Canon. Or 420mm with the Olympus and 560mm with the Canon. I have a similar configuration as yours, my Canon lens is also 400mm but F4. And my camera is 5DS 50 MP. If you crop the 50MP Canon photo with 1.6x you will get a 640mm 18 MP photo with the 400mm lens. Which is pretty close to the 600mm FF equivalent of the Olympus 20MP photo. With the 45MP R5 camera, the megapixels will be slightly less than the Canon 5DS, but it will be quite close to the Olympus as a comparison. Otherwise, I have the E-M1X and I'm quite happy with the focus on birds in flight. I'm not sure if I should update it now or wait for the next model of OM-1? Thanks!
@TJPhotography
@TJPhotography Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback, I thought I mentioned it when I compared the pixel difference in LH, but I seem to have forgotten to say it has to do with the difference in MP sensors. It was on my mind at least when I made the video. Anywho, I am mainly focusing on testing out the new bird AF system in OM1, and comparing it to my own owned R5. I am not really comparing FF vs. MFT and who makes the best image, that wouldn't be fair :) But I am highlighting some of the clear differences between shooting with MFT vs. FF, in case people didn't know about it, but I am not saying what's best. That I think comes down to personal taste in many ways. I am amazed at the improvements on the OM1 vs. older models! I never got to try the Bird AF on E-M1x, it came out after I swapped systems :( Maybe wait to see if an OM1X comes? I have actually purchased an OM1 now on the used market, quite happy with it. But it will be for smaller lighter travels and for vlogging. I think I'll change the title of the video, it seems many think this is a head-on-head camera/sensor battle :)
@kirostar12
@kirostar12 Жыл бұрын
@@TJPhotography It is clear to me that the video does not compare the sensors, I am just clarifying so that others do not wonder where the difference in resolution comes from. Otherwise, I have done tests between FF cameras and Olympus and I have not found a difference even in the noise of the photo. I know that the 5DS is not one of the best cameras when it comes to noise in the photo, but it is still FF and I was surprised that there is almost no difference with the E-M1X in terms of noise, quality and detail in the photo. Otherwise, I don't use the E-M1X's bird tracking. It's not bad for large birds or ones that don't move, but I don't think it works well for fast flying small birds. I think C-AF works better on E-M1X. Since I bought the Olympus I hardly use the Canon, mostly because of the weight. The Olympus configuration is much lighter and more compact when traveling.

In my late Sony year, I upgraded my Sony a7r III to the a7r IV. But it seemed I was one of the few unlucky ones and got the Sony a7r IV with a sensor problem, or whatever it was. They never announced the issue officially, but they have in later times made newer a7r IV models and pulled back older versions. Anyways, with the version I had, I used the Sony 200-600mm lens, and I never seemed to get any sharp images, no matter what settings. They were either soft or just missed focus on the object. I never had this issue with the Sony a7r III. So I contacted the Sony support, and they told me the Sony 200-600mm lens wasn't good enough glass for the a7r IV, and that was the problem. After much back and forth, where I explained that others have gotten good shots with this combo, and I have tried all the settings, with fast and low shutter speed, with and without I.S. and on a tripod. They just ended the support by saying it was a user error problem. Blaming it all on me, even though I tried to explain it might be a sensor issue. They didn't want to take it in, so I contacted my local camera shop dealer, and sold off all my Sony gear (3 cameras and a dusin lenses), and won't be returning to that shitty support service again. Now, current-time I see they do commercials saying that the Sony a7r IV and 200-600mm lens is the perfect combination :D :D Man, that just makes me laugh nowadays :)

Thanks for the video. But in reality it is not a good comparison. You saying the Fstop differences I have to disagree. If you wanted a better comparison. I believe the OM1 is 20 mp.. Just use the R5 and the 400 without the adapter and put the R5 in crop mode which is just over 17mp. Then compare them both at F4. You will see the out of focus on the Canon blows away anything the m43rds does for out of focus, for sharpness (the 400 does not need a teleconverter that softens the image) The AF on the Canon will be better without a teleconverter and do much better with birds in flight. Look I am impressed with the OM1. I just purchased an om-d M1 II for use for other types of photography and videography. Good stuff olympus but for BIF, the Canon is superior. I am getting old and some day may have to go with OM systems but for now the canon system is superior, but it is a lot more expensive and heavier. There are always upsides and down sides. Here is another thing to try. Buy the viltrox EF-M1 or EF-M2ii and put that 400 on the OM1.That would be an interesting test. You either get a 800mm lens at F2.8 or you get a 400 at F2 On the om1. Would be interesting to see how badly the adapter affects AF $149 for the adapters right now.

I´m using de EM1 MKII but only for macro work which is excellent and for some landscape or street photography. Even the fastest lenses f1.2 from Olympus they are actually f2.4 when the Canon, Nikon ,Sony have lots of them, even faster. OM1 or EM1, EM-5, EP-L, are just "toys" cameras, easy to carry around and fun to use. If you want top quality you´ll need the R5, Nikon Z7, Sony A9, that´s it. Nice work--..and keep it up!!!!!

For some reason some individuals are opinionated without any depth of experience. I have used and owned pro gear from Canon and Nikon. They are solid camera and lens manufacturers with really first class gear. I even had the Z9 using it with Ftz on a 500pf wonderful camera but because I have wrist issues decided to give it up and sold the Z9 reluctantly, but kept the 500 pf to use with my D500 so I have no bias to any camera manufacturer. However I have used Sony and have still got mft Panasonic and Olympus gear. Yes I must be an idiot with all the gear I have but the fact is that I have photographed wildlife and particularly birds with BIF being targeted with the new focusing abilities of the various brands. I have only photographed for 50years. Let me tell any guys out there that the new OM1 is awesome with the 300 and 150-400f4.5 pros. It does not have full frame and of course that has benefits like cropping to zoom in on a subject but how many of us really print above 8x10 and besides for all those pixel peepers when you make wall sized prints you stand far away from the print to take it all in. You can do the same thing with mft and you will be hard pushed to see the difference from a normal viewing distance. Anyhow you’ll always have someone make a statement without any experience whatsoever.
