I don't normally comment, but it would be a shame to see those ww2 gas cans get turned into scrap. They make a gas tank liner to restore old rusty tanks. I've used it on an old motorcycle tank and it worked great. Have to follow the instructions to the letter or it wont work right. It comes in a couple parts. It has an Acid etch to get rid of the rust, then a cleaner and a coating. You should check it out and keep those old cans around.

Hey, you can buy tank coating kits for motorcycle tanks that have rusted inside. You could attempt to coat the inside of those old cans and keep them in service for a little while longer. add a fresh coat of rust resistant paint to the outside and they will be good as new!

What is the difference between jerry cans and gas cans?
@brentontasker2662
@brentontasker2662 5 жыл бұрын
Something my Grandad taught me when poring a full or near full jerry can. If you turn the can onto its side at the beginning it vents better and wont gurgle you'll maintain a constant stream. So you shouldn't have as much spillage without a funnel. Gotta love the old men they had figured it all out in their lifetimes and passing simple knowledge down to us.

Thumbs up to this. Been using this design all my life. Turn it on its side with the and pour with the nozzle side up. It feels counter intuative at first but once you get the first 10-15 % out it'll pour out nicely. As Steve above said, same trick works on oil jugs, or anything with an offset top. It becomes second nature after a while.

Keep a rag with those type of cans. In the summer months put the rag over the lid and slowly open. This will stop the dreaded fuel bath. In the winter, keep a flat head screwdriver,so you can pry the lid off. Those cans don't off gas, which is the big appeal to owning them.

I am very impressed. The Jerry cans we used in the Army over 40 years ago were already all banged up. Twelve of them rode in the trailer I pulled with generators for communications equipment. One got away and slid about a thousand feet or more in the snow, could not open it the lid was stuck from being hit by a rock. During WWII many Germans were caught with a small hose to siphon gas. I doubt much fuel was lost due to lack of a spout, you can always siphon even from a bucket.

I got some old Jerry cans for free. They had so much rust in them I could see light through the pin holes. I had some POR15 (metal/prep ready) left over from a project and used it on the interior and exterior of the cans after taking a wire wheel to the outside. For $15 on Amazon I got the POR15 tank sealer and re sealed the interior of 4 Jerry cans! That one 8oz can has fantastic coverage. With a few coats of spray paint on the exterior I now have like new Jerry cans. Several months later there have been no leaks and the POR15 sealer is just as pristine as the day I put it in.

Qorax Wikipedia says different...Tom and Jerry" was a commonplace phrase for youngsters indulging in riotous behaviour in 19th-century London. The term comes from Life in London, or Days and Nights of Jerry Hawthorne and his elegant friend Corinthian Tom (1823) by Pierce Egan.[8] However Brewer notes no more than an "unconscious" echo of the Regency era original in the naming of the cartoon.

The cap on the scepter cans is a known weak point which cracks/breaks/leaks over time; and the overall service life is NOT decades. One benefit of the scepter can is that they tend to melt instead of explosively failing in a fire. If explosive failure is a concern the Wavian Explo-Safe can with the aluminum mesh interior is the way to go; those cans can be welded on with out exploding; probably the safest can to carry in or on a vehicle.

We have some of the round vintage cans but we dont use them due to their age, hopefully these will last him a long time :)

I found a guy who had a home heating oil Delivery company. He kept two of the military Gerry cans in each truck with home heating oil in them. He recently closed his company... and is selling everything including these cans. I scored 6 of them for $120 ... and they were pristine because of the constant contact with the dyed diesel. He has 50 or so, so I'm gonna collect another half dozen at least. EZ flow sells new caps and gaskets... and after a good cleaning... they are the flagship of my fuel storage now. Having said that, the Wavian cans are the best you can buy on the market these days. They will be perfect for your needs... and if you feel the roto packs aren't providing the capacity you need... the Wavian will fill that gap. Thank you for your time, the video and the sacrifice of this great can ... God Bless you and the family... and have a great day.

When you have to carefully pour from a "kraft-stoff canister", hold the can nearly flat, with the opening at the highest point. It will then pour neatly, without "glugging"... Done it for at least sixty years. I have a modern, steel, 5lt version that I use for my fire-wood, chainsaws. I never need a spout, and I seldom spill any. I believe it was British solders that first used the term "Jerry" during the first world war, Jerry being the English term for a "chamber pot". which is what the new German helmets looked like to British Tommies... It was Rommels retreating army in the desert, that left large numbers of these empty cans in perfect condition for the advancing British army to "gratefully" reuse... The singular term: "Jerry" was applied as a collective noun by ordinary English and British people during the second war, as in "Jerry will be over again to night", meaning another air raid.... Modern plastic fuel containers should not be called "Jerry cans".....

No hate intended here, but I need to point a couple things out as both a journeyman metalworker and welder, as well as a journeyman in carpentry. First, a welded seam/bond done properly will be stronger than the bare metal. If your welds are breaking before the metal, you're doing it incorrectly. Second, in most cases, the metric system is vastly superior, more streamlined and a more accurate standard. Love the videos, man. :D

Even better & safer is the Wavian EXPLO-SAFE can with the DETO-STOP mesh inside www.jerrycans.co.uk/product/red-explosafe-20/ The inside of the Explo-Safe can is filled with an aluminum mesh which the stops the can from exploding if shot, or even welded on (yes video exists).Plus, the mesh acts like a sacrificial anode, meaning the inside of the can is not painted. With the Deto-stop mesh, the 20L can holds exactly 5 gal. One aspect of the three handle design you didn't mention is that it also allows you to carry 2 cans with just one hand. They also have them in yellow; the price works out to about $56 per can

Standard issue for the US and Canadian military (I was in for 8 years here in Canada) are the Scepter MIL spec cans. Made to NATO specs and are TOUGH, thick plastic. They stack and have the 3 handles. No fume or gas leaks, and they vent from the handle. Only problems are, it has a large threaded cap that often gets stuck TIGHT and requires a large wrench to loosen. There was also the occasional can that leaked from the spout during use. I'm guessing it was due to my unit not keeping up with replacing gaskets. Nozzle is long and simple, with no annoying CARB gizmos. Can is lighter too. Would love to hear your opinions on it. I do really like the simple latch system that Waivan uses over the threaded design Scepter uses. Waivans are $100 here in Canada compared to Scepters $80.

Plastic has the advantage of no paint and rust flakes (even microscopic) to foul up these hyper-sensitive motors. Sadly, I've ditched my old jerry cans (as they're called here) to avoid problems. Maybe these new cans will not have particulate residues (eg due to denting) but time will tell.

"Look at Granddad's cans" Under ANY other circumstance, that would be one confusing statement.
@bernieshort6311
@bernieshort6311 2 жыл бұрын
The ones your granddad gave you maybe the US war version of the Gerry Can as they have the two horizontal seams rather than the recessed welded seam of the German cans. In the UK they can be purchased from Machine Mart for just under £30. I haven't thrown mine out of a vehicle at 40 miles an hour but it has been in use on my sail boat for years and tossed about all over the place during its time with me. Not at sea though. they are secure in purpose build racks. Thank you for this video it was very interesting and has proven that a 1940's design has stood the test of time outstandingly well.

The powder coat company? I use Eastwood to powder coat my bullets. They make great stuff. I bet if you put some powder in a rusty can and shook it up a ton with air soft bb’s you could coat it pretty well. I don’t know what you would bake it in though. I wouldn’t recommend using your kitchen oven...

@Tzuede Off the Cuff I mean no disrespect Because I really do want to have a serious discussion about it but the fact that it keeps being used and is the standard doesn't mean it's better right because using millimeters for fittings makes more sense then uhm idk inches I have no idea honestly my biggest problem with imperial is the fact that you have 2800 feet in a mile or something unlike the 1000 meters in a kilometer
@mootneyvlogs6677
@mootneyvlogs6677 5 жыл бұрын
@Late to the Game well I mean making sense is quite a subjective thing but I'll tell you why according to me the metric makes more sense because we have the meter which does span a lot more and if that's too much just use half of one which is exactly 50 centimeters which is my main point not really about the distance because honestly it doesn't make All to big a difference but the maths when working with the metric you don't need any math because it's all base 10 litteraly everyone knows the amount of millimeters/centimeters in a meter because it makes sense whenever I hear someone talk about the imperial they find it hard to do conversions and not only in lenght also volume is a lot more sensible to top it off 1 cubic decimetre is exactly 1 liter
@mootneyvlogs6677
@mootneyvlogs6677 5 жыл бұрын
@Tzuede Off the Cuff well im obviously not talking about the use my issue is with the way it's set up not with screws or anything of course leaving them the way they are is easier but that doesn't mean that we ever used a system like this wasn't batshit insane
@mootneyvlogs6677
@mootneyvlogs6677 5 жыл бұрын
@Tzuede Off the Cuff also the reason in science we use the metric is because it's just that much easier now I'm not saying science always has better ways (I'm obviously referring to octopus and it's plural) but in this case I'd say that it's valid
