Great all round video. Very informative. You make everything look easy. Tricky devil. Lol I couldn’t but help think how great it would be to watch a time lapse video of these beds. Basically everyday pictures and intermittently showing in-depth plant stages though it’s life cycle. Richard you really are putting out videos for future generations. AG will benefit when all the dust clears and this is the only alternative. I could see classes centered around your videos. Then practical application in hands on environment. Nutrient density in foods is very important in this climate of helping our immune systems and DNA to help fight cancer. Regenerative Agriculture is a Win win win. Health, Economics and Climate. Great on you mate!👍

I'm a huge advocate of Stihl's KM range. The tiller is ferocious. Bought the engine while I worked as a gardener full time 6 years ago and still has never let me down to this day. Way nicer for raised beds and utterly minces through larger areas

Tilthing goes no deeper than 2 inches. Your machine is tilling the soil and destroying the biome of the earth. Working on the top of the ground to add amendments and prepare for seeding while maintaining the health of the soil produces nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables. Also, with established non-compacted beds one pass over with your amendments is all that is needed.

Great Video as usual . . . . Thanks for your time and effort. The Johnny’s tiller is $700 and I assume this product would be similarly priced if available in the US. I can’t help thinking though, what the advantage of either tiller would be over a mantis for $400.

The ellia 3000 (basic) is $850 GST which coverts to ~$650 USD. The nice thing is they have some crimper attachments which is nice.

A bit of broad forking would be nice for the compact beds??

Hi Richard, brilliant, is there a reason you didn't Broad Fork first or do you feel that's not needed in this case, if so when do you think you do need to broad Fork?

Very well done review. I'm hoping the folks who make both tools take notice and make said improvements. I would really like to see a way someone could take advantage of the huge 40 volt lithium ion batteries. Those would go all day long but obviously add some weight.

This was such a helpful video. My garden has been neglected for many years, the prior owners had horses and the soil has become very compacted, many persistent weeds have established and we have thick bundles of ground elder wherever a workable patch of soil exists. Can I deep mulch directly on top of these weed "jungles", or does the ground elder need to be suppressed in some way first? (, I put cardboard on them before but they just punched through that and ate it for breakfast).

Have you thought of digging some holes and using geothermal heating? "Greenhouse in the snow" is a fun little idea that is growing Oranges in the snow in Nebraska. Just a thought. Hopefully not too dumb!

that's a great idea! I wonder if you could put an adapted angle grinder for higher RPMs than a drill?
@ceili

I reckon it's way too cold for that where Richard lives and the polythene on that tunnel has practically no insulation so most heat generated by underground tunnel/vents would be lost.

Do you till over the compost on the market garden beds?
@regenerativeagriculture
@regenerativeagriculture 4 жыл бұрын
Not usually, no. A rake typically is all we do nowadays. If beds have clods, which some of them do from frost heave (depends on type of compost in different beds) then I might choose to. I have some that might need this, so I will test this tool again then...

My god man just get a mantis tiller!! $300-$350 US, and either 2cycle or 4 cycle. Easy!!! No damn batteries to replace and no ware on your drills. You would need like 10 batteries for that little area.

The object of no till is no weeding. Tilling brings up more weed seeds-destroys microbial life-less over all fertility.

Shotgunbobby1 There is. Distinction in the depth.
@shotgunbobby11
@shotgunbobby11 4 жыл бұрын
Drew Black ok ok you got me there, I call all of it tilling no matter how far in depth you go. Also the mantis can cultivate or till. Cultivating on it allows a depth of 2-3 inches supposedly. I never use that I guess. I just go deep all the time. Haha. Maybe I will in the future but all you do is just flip the tines around.

Actually, the Ellia 3000 is far too overpriced to even consider it for my farm. This stuff is getting as bad as a bandaid costing $10 at a hospital.
