I used this for my 80' long fence, 3 years ago. My fence was 8' tall, because of the need for complete privacy. It still looks great. I didn't have to deal with labor of creating the concrete, saved me a lot of back pain, and a lot quicker. I had to remove one of the post because I didn't realize that the post was twisted. It was so easy to remove it, by digging around the hole, because it was so light. I will definitely use it for other projects.

My fence were there for 50 years with concrete ;) And destroying was very painfull. This is strange age, make things quick without vision to the future. Concrete is natural material. Can be crushed and stored on garbage like stones. What next generation will do with this "foam balls" with steel pipe in it?
@kickyourmum
@kickyourmum 8 жыл бұрын
Concrete (Portland Cement) is hardly natural. It's one of the largest causes of C02 production in the world. Definitely recyclable though. This product has value where speed of installation is an issue. I can't see it replacing a structural footing though, so it's basically a timesaver for power pole installations and fencing. Time = money. I don't get the reason for the pull out test though. That's testing the shear strength of the soil around the post, which is variable. Not a useful test at all. Apart from that, it looks strong enough for a fence so why bother with the hard hat and bad trance music?

I know, that 1 ton of portland cement produces around 1 ton of CO2 when is made. Some of this volume is used again from atmosphere, when harden. I know, time is everything now, in this quick age. Dont now, how for you, but I will be much happier with concrete garbage behind my house, than PUR foam garbage.

Let's use the cheapest concrete we can to compare, just playing. It's not always superior however it is very convenient in many applications. Let's say you discover a pole that needs reset. I don't carry concrete, water and mixing tools in my truck. Secure set is good for when you are off the beaten path away from water and difficult to get to. I do carry secure set. I can quickly reset a pole and be done pretty quick. When considering man hours and returning with the proper tools, its a good deal. We don't use it for many new installs but it is great for many purposes, a lot less hauling and labor.

I had to pull out some fence posts from the coral rock in south Florida. They were 2 inch galvanized pipe, most in concrete and some in urethane foam, that was a recent repair. The concrete posts gave a horrible fight and it took a jackhammer and Bobcat to remove them. The foam set posts pulled out with the Bobcat alone. One thing I noticed was on a few wood posts we pulled the foam set posts had no rot while the concrete posts tended to break off.

The tall light poles around baseball fields shown in some of our videos are pictures of poles we set. Think of the 100 foot light poles at baseball fields and the side force applied to them when a strong wind is blowing. The banks of lights at top of the pole acts like a hugh sail so you can imagine the side force applied to that pole. Secure Set had to qualify and meet the side load requirement to hold those poles in order for us to set those poles.
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation 11 жыл бұрын
The weight of concrete has very little if anything to do with a fence pole being stable in the ground. The increase in the footing at the base of the post determines the stability of the post. As long as the material being used to set the post has a higher compression strength than the surrounding dirt the dirt will give way first. Do the physics and the numbers don't lie. This is why the utility companies use Secure Set to set poles that weigh in excess of 10,000 pounds.

If I'm putting in 8 posts for a small house or shed in the back yard, I'm happy to spend $40 for that. That's a piece of cake, compared to hauling my wheelbarrow out, making concrete, pushing that from hole to hole, not to mention the extra curing time and clean-up afterward. Are you kidding me? I agree. If this is done by a pro the labor would be a lot less than concrete. The materials cost will offset a fraction of the savings passed down to the customer on their invoice but, the customer is still saving a decent amount of money. If done by DIY, it saves a lot of time and eliminates the risk of permanent lung damage from free silica particles.

I'm going to go with the optimistic approach as opposed to he's attempting to sell expensive crap on the internet. 1> The holes are probably not going to be dramatically different for the testing. They're holes. 2> The ground 2 feet away is probably comparable in makeup so it's not likely that one is looser than the other. 3> The product costs $8.00 a hole and some have complained that that is too expensive. If I were doing a ranch fence where I had to schlep and mix concrete in the middle of nowhere, I'd probably consider this option. I might even consider the option normally based on labor and additional factors to mix concrete. 4> One of the declarations of the product is better penetration to adjacent soil, thus I'd expect the pulls to be heavier to unearth the posts as more soil is effected. Great video. I agree the hardhat and dad's shirt is corny.

The utility industry prefers this product over concrete because of its strength, durability, ease of application, protection from water damage and absorption, and labor savings with how quickly it sets up. Unlike concrete that absorbs moisture and contributes immensely to the break down of their utility poles. You should contact the engineers of the utility companies in the country and ask them, since they have been using this type of product for over TWO DECADES.

Are they selling a product that will result in millions of dollars in lawsuits? To answer the question, the foam expands in every direction, fills all gaps and presses outward on the soil in a manner that concrete does not. This is why it requires more force to extract the post. It is compacting the soil around it. It does seem like this outward force is inadequate, until you use the product. It's solid.

@@legacy5346 lol not sure where the lawsuit comment came from, I'm just a civil engineer making an observation. My point was that the foam expanding won't compact the soil because it's unconfined/allowed to rise. It's actually less outward force than the hydrostatic pressure of the unset concrete. Hello, Secure Set, when it expands and hardens, becomes high density, closed cell structural foam. It is from the polyurethane family of "plastic" chemicals. In other words, it become an inert plastic like product, that will not break down over time. Known life of the product underground is more than 40 years. In essence, you have made a "man made rock" . It does not allow water or air to move through it, therefore it does not leach out or absorb in any harmful substance in the soil. It does not affect ground water or support any fungicidal growth. It will effectively protect your posts from rot or corrosion for many many years. Thank you.

They use this here in Texas for the utility poles and guard rail poles , It seems to work pretty good in this solid clay soil . I'm not sure how long they have been using it but when the utility pole in my yard had to be replaced the crew boss told me that all the utility company's have stopped using cement because of the labor with mixing and clean up . He told me that he felt the foam was helping the poles tolerate the high winds , he said the poles set in foam didn't break off or shift as often ??

I'm very much in need of replacing my wooden deck posts set in concrete due to rot at the base. After seeing your video, Secure Set has piqued my interest. As far as preventing or minimizing rot, is Secure Set better than concrete? Also in concrete vs. Secure Set, what would be better when the posts have to support the weight of the deck plus anything on the deck such as furniture and people? I thank you in advance for replying to my question.
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, Yes, Secure Set is the better option for setting posts that you do not want to rot below ground line. Secure Set is a high density (5 lb.) commercial strength foam with a compressive strength of 100.1 psi and a tensile strength of 130 psi. It expands 18:1. Its closed cell structure does not allow air or water to move through it. Without either air(oxygen) or water, rot cannot occur. As far decks, deck posts can be set with Secure Set for decks up to 4 to 5 feet above the ground. Make sure you set the posts deep enough and that you cross brace the vertical deck posts. Cross bracing will eliminate the potential for sway or shifting when you have a dynamic load shift, such as a deck full of people suddenly moving from one side of the deck to the other. Recommendation is to set the depth of the posts at least 1/3 of the overall length of the post or 24" whichever is greater. The diameter of the hole should be double the dimension of the post. ie: 4x4 posts should have a hole width that is 8". If you expect heavy loads on the deck, consider placing concrete pavers under the bottom of the posts to help distribute the column load on the deck posts.

Interesting tests. Providing the specs was appreciated. In the "side-load" test, the strap was about a foot lower on the wooden post for the Secure Set which makes the leverage used unequal. Even so, both posts appeared to fail the same way. With the metal pole test, the pole set in cement bent while the cement remained in position; the pole set in secure set stayed straighter because the Secure Set moved with the pole. This may be due to the weight difference?
@swbaldy
@swbaldy 8 жыл бұрын
+Ever Better This is the only test that is of any importance. We are typically looking for lateral load resistance with posts not tension. The metal pole test did indicate failure of the post with concrete, while the post rotated with secure set. My educated guess would be localized crushing of the Secure Set foam. I would be interested in seeing a lateral load test with the metal posts. IMO Secure Set would likely produce lower lateral load resistance.
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation 8 жыл бұрын
+Ever Better Have you ever seen a fence post broken off? This is what this test is showing you, let me explain. Secure Set has the ability to disperse the weight of the wind or an animal pushing against it and can take more force against the post because it is able to disperse the weight. Concrete is not able to disperse the weight and so when a great force comes against the post, the post breaks off. This is what this test was attempting to show you. This is why for the past 17 years the utility industry has installed all poles and telephone poles with Secure Set in every state across America and all over Canada. Have you noticed that when a car crashes into a telephone pole that there’s major damage to the car and the pole is still standing? That’s because the Secure Set was able to disperse the weight of the great force, before utility poles and telephone poles were all installed with concrete and when a car crashed into a telephone pole it would break off the pole and would need to be replaced. +50reeves Apparently I stuck a nerve. I am a structural engineer and I am not trying to knock the product... just assessing the video. In fact, I find the use of rigid expansive foam quite ingenious for this application. Which is why I watched the video. Lateral loading from wind or other applied loads would cause a moment couple in the "footer" which is transferred to the soil. If the Secure Set allows for elastic deformation (temporary crushing) then I understand your point of load dispersion. However, if the deformation is elastic to plastic (permanent crushing) then the foam would not recover to the original position and basically loose some of the load bearing capacity in that particular direction. To get back to my original point in my first post, I would like to see lateral loading tests which show moment resistance to failure. Similar to what you did in the last part of the video with loading high on the metal posts. Just need a max load from the tests. I would expect concrete to be higher here, but that is not necessarily a bad thing....

On the last tests (pulling horizontal), it seems like the concrete holds the posts vertical without giving way. The posts either break or bend, where the Secure Set seems to actually let the post bend over. Wouldn't that mean that the fence would be leaning (i.e. not 90 degrees) after a strong wind if Secure Set is used? Compared to the fence flexing, but returning to vertical if concrete is used?

Hello, Good question. Secure Set has a compression strength of 100.1 psi. That means that it can support 14,400 lbs per square foot. If your carport has been constructed with either posts or walls, and either of these are supported by Secure Set, if the load bearing weight at each of those points does not exceed 14,400 lbs per sq foot, you will not have any issue with the high density foam.

I agree natek327. It looked like while the Secure Set held up beautifully the concrete in the side load test performed better. The bottom of the concrete wood pole didn't budge a bit while it appears that the Secure Set bottom of the wood pole did move before breaking. Makes me wonder what would happen if the load was back and forth like in the real world with wind. Still the Secure Set seems very good. I'll wait for the ecommerce site to check out pricing.

I'm a bit sceptical regards your 24 inch holes .. from watching your slowmo the ground is giving way, but the soil pattern as the ground gives way would indicate to me that your holes were "belled out" at the bottoms before the concrete and secure set were poured. Can you confirm or deny that? Just sayin, that that is not a typical industry standard when installing fence posts metal or wood.
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, Your observation is good. Presenting information about a product is only worth publishing if what you present is accurate and true. What you observed is correct, the ground did give way like there was a bubble at the bottom of the post. The reality is true. The way Secure Set works is entirely different than concrete. Concrete fills a void and it relies on the weight of the concrete and the surface friction between the concrete and the inside surface of the hole to resist uplift and to some degree sideload. On the other hand, Secure Set, after it is mixed and poured into the hole, and while it is still in the liquid form, (about 45 to 90 seconds, depending on outside temperature) it is absorbed very quickly into the soil substrate. Once the bulk of Secure Set starts to expand, the product absorbed in the soil will also expand. This forms something similar to a "root ball" at the bottom of the post. Because of the penetration of the liquid Secure Set into the soil, The "root ball" effectively has a diameter larger than the diameter of the hole. Pulling the post out of the ground with this "bulge" at the bottom of the post makes it very difficult and as you observed in the video, causes a greater disruption of the soil than if the post was pulled smoothly out of a hole. That is why Secure Set works so well in addition to protecting the wood or metal post below ground line from either rot or corrosion. You had a good point, assuredly there was no "belling out" of the bottom of the hole, its just Secure Set doing its thing! Thank you

Hello, The known lifespan of high density foam that is protected under the ground exceeds 40+ years. You are correct about foam that is left exposed to ultraviolet light. After a while the foam will start to discolor (turning a yellow color). If the oxidized surface of the foam which has discolored, is left undisturbed, the damage to the foam will only be about 1/16th inch deep. However, with the possibility of yard maintenance work disturbing the oxidized zone, the UV light will affect the next layer of foam, etc. Over time the foam will slowly deteriorate until it gets to ground level and is covered with soil. Thank you.

Using foam will be more than adequate. The issue is the depth of the post. I'm not sure how deep you are planning on setting the posts, but based on your information, with the load you have I would set the post no less than 48" in the ground, that should put you below the frost line. Also, if you can, try to "bell" shape the bottom of the hole a little, this will be a very good way to also counter frost heave. Thank you.

If you are only figuring material costs then you will cheat yourself because in the end you are the one to pay for your own project. When you pull, you are testing the strength of the soil, not the strength of concrete or secure set
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation
@SecureSet-Fence-Installation 5 жыл бұрын
Hello, Yes to a degree. That is why it is important to test both products in the same soil type. What we are demonstrating, is that in a side by side test, under exactly the same conditions, Secure Set holds the post in the ground better, as it requires greater uplift force to extract it from the ground. The reason is that Secure Set actually permeates into the soil as a liquid, before it expands into high density foam. This allows it to lock into the substrate more tenaciously than does concrete. Concrete fills the hole, but it does not penetrate the soil. Secure Set is also a closed cell material which prevents air and water from getting to the post below ground line. This protects the post and helps prevent rot for wood poles and corrosion for metal posts. Thank you.
