It seems pointless to make a video about cassette tapes one week before it turns 2018. But I feel it's worth it to document a bit of history.
If the text is flashing by too fast, you can PAUSE the video.
I got two cassette players this December 2017. They are novelty gadgets that can digitize cassette tapes. They are not high end audiophile approved hifi devices, so don't be thinking of digitizing whole libraries of rare cassettes with these.
These are good for people who want to digitize a couple of old mix tapes or a few tracks on old cassettes. The crackles and artifacts on your tape get recorded into digital too. I think if you use this long enough, it will eventually "eat" your tape. The build quality does not inspire confidence. But they DO work out of the box.
This is a long video, but I've provided timestamps here of the different topics, you can fast forward accordingly.
00:00 Intro
Prices are shown in 11:05.
I try out the two devices from 00:00 to 11:09.
00:51 - The first one, ezcap231 USB Cassette Capture Recorder converts the audio from the cassette tape (in real time, while playing it on the player) to an MP3 file and saves it into a USB flash drive you've plugged into its USB OTG (on the go) port.
You bypass the need for having a computer as a go between for conversion.
The tape I used was Britney Spears's 2001 album Britney.
03:54 - The second one, Reliance/ Reshow Tape to USB Cassette Capture Converter provides a mini USB (type B) to USB Type A cable to plug into your computer.
I've seen the same item branded as "Reshow" on Amazon and other places. But on Lazada it's Reliance.
Using it, you can play the cassette in real time, and your computer's sound card will capture the audio, and input it into any audio software of your choice. Audacity, a free and open source software, is provided on a CD.
The tape I used was Reel Big Fish's 2002 album Cheer Up!.
07:38 to 08:08 - some pros and cons
08:09 to 10:10 - The second device is good for people who don't have a line in port in their computer.
But if you do still have a line-in port in your computer, and you have a working cassette tape player, you won't need the second device. You can just directly link the cassette tape player to your line-in port using an audio cable.
I demonstrate this from 12:54 to 14:05.
If you don't wish to see this part, you can CEASE WATCHING by 11:09. I finish trying out the two cassette tape to mp3 devices by 11:09.
10:10 to 11:09- summary of the two devices, including how the first device splits tracks based on silence detection (but not super reliable). I also would not trust its auto-reverse function, better to flip it yourself.
Also side by side pictures and what comes in the package.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Bonus features timestamps:
11:12 to 12:32 - I talk about how I used to record mp3s from my computer into cassette.
FYI, I had to dig up an old installation file of Winamp just to do the dramatic re-enactment of how I used to record an MP3 to cassette. I'm surprised I was still able to install it. I think I am the only person to ever play Post Malone in 2017 on Winamp.
If it seems that from 11:18 to 12:21 the video has nothing to do with the audio, you would be right. I had no idea how to make the visual aids for that part, so I just shot some cassette- tape related footage, hopefully informative.
12:11 to 12:21 - pictures of blank tapes of varying recording lengths (30, 60, 90, 120 minutes, all Type I).
12:54 to 14:05 - How to record audio into your PC using a line-in port. In this part, I demonstrate using a cassette tape player, but you can do this for ANY audio device with a line-out/ audio-out port - like a radio (through its headphone/ speaker port), or a turntable (perhaps you may need an amplifier), or a minidisc player, etc.
In my dramatic re-enactment of how I would record a cassette into my computer, I used my Nature's Finest: Naughty by Nature's Greatest Hits 1999 tape.
14:04 to 14:26 - about the write protect tabs of cassettes
If you are wondering why I used a tiny portable player when I had a photo of a proper boombox style tape deck, it's because that deck is super high up a shelf and I could not reach it. So I just took a photo of it for illustration purposes but could not actually demo on it.
14:26 to 16:30 - minidiscs
If you wish to hear more, please comment and I will make a separate video. If you wish to see my old minidisc collection, please look at my Flickr album here- www.flickr.com/photos/hey-gem....
16:31 to 18:07 - two very neat books on music:
1. Mix Tape: The Art of Cassette Culture by Thurston Moore (the man from Sonic Youth)
2. The Boombox Project by Lyle Owerko, with foreword by Spike Lee
background music: Christmas Rap from incompetech.com

This was a HUGELY important video. I have a 22yr old KORG T1. Floppies were the means to record tunes created on the KORG, but floppies deteriorate and I was lucky mine had been stored in a cool, dry place and still work. However, moving them FROM the KORG to my computer (iMAC) has been a nightmare, not to mention costly and time-consuming, only to fail at every turn. These simple devices allowed me to use the 1/4" jacks out of the KORG directly to EZCAP rather than the MIDI outs from the KORG to begin saving compositions nearly 50 years old which had been saved to the KORG on floopies. These is a considerable loss of quality, but the tunes are well-enough discernable that someone with a keen ear who does NOTATION is able to convert them to sheet music/scoring/arranging/orchestration. That's HUGE.

Excellent and informative video. I bought one of these to digitise an audio book on cassette. It worked fine but I went on to buy an 80s Sony Walkman I use the modern personal stereo as a backup. They work well as a Walkman type but on the bus the automatic transmission interfered terribly with the audio. What I ended up using to capture audio was a Sony TCM-939 cassette recorder and for music a Technics RS-B11W Stereo Dual Cassette Tape Deck. To capture audio from these I use the line in/ line out and a 'digitnow' capture cable, using audacity as you did. I don't like the trend of removing the headphone jack either.

Cassettes are the one thing that won't make a comeback, too much maintenance with tapes. I still use my cassette recorders at home and I have a small stash of high bias blank tapes I'm looking to use with computer software to make the "ultimate mix tape". Good video here, especially for a female who is as into the music as some of us geek guys are. I have one of those 'easy cassette' player devices I got as a Christmas gift but it never worked so it sits in my box of audio cables. These days, the best music players are your iPODS, MP3 players and phones, they just need to be charged frequently. And remember, KEEP THE VOLUME DOWN if you're listening on any type of headphone, you don't want to destroy your hearing. Thanks for letting me riff. :-)

For the first one you tested (to usb), have you tested the automatic feature? There's a way for it to automatically record each side and then switch over. I'm wondering if it will record a break between songs? Ie unique MP3 files per song or if it will do Side A of the tape on 1 mp3 file and then side B on 1 MP3 file. Would like the songs to be separate but want to make sure it will do that automatically and I don't have to stop/start recording between songs. Thanks!
@heygem
@heygem 4 жыл бұрын
auto mode does detect the silence in between songs and saves it into two discrete MP3 files. but it works best if it's a commercially recorded cassette. if your source is some homemade mix tape, sometimes the interval between tracks isn't long enough or truly silent enough for the converter to detect as a gap between songs. my units do not do auto reverse, so it won't be flipping over to side B on its own no matter what mode you use.

It's normal, like other Walkman style portable players. But if you use it to play back tapes often, I don't know if the cassette mechanism will hold up, as it's a cheap device. You may start to hear hisses. This wasn't meant for longevity or even constant playing. Just for quick digitization of tapes.

I can't say it "will" but depending on your luck, it may. It's just the luck of the draw if you get a durable one. The quality control is shoddy haha. As some others here have suggested, for long term/ frequent cassette playing, better get a used tape player from known brands like Sony or Panasonic with good tape heads.

Nice review. I noticed even the USB cable version with Audacity, it’s outputting in mono only. That’s sad because the tape heads look like 4 track stereo auto reverse heads. I see two capstans and pinch rollers. Are these auto reverse? I’m sure the audio qualities of these players aren’t that good. If you have an older higher quality Walkman device, that would probably sound better. If you have a laptop without a line in, you can always buy a USB device that will give you line in function (ADC). This method gives you stereo and would sound way better. BTW, when you record directly to the USB thumb drive, what bitrate is the MP3?
@heygem
@heygem 4 жыл бұрын
oh i don't know how to look at the heads. but when i tested it, it had no auto reverse. yeah, this is for people who have no means of getting older higher quality Walkman devices who just need to digitize a few tapes.
@stevesstuff1450
@stevesstuff1450 4 жыл бұрын
Both of those cassette players are stereo playback through headphones, and auto-reverse. Problem is with the mechanism it uses.... it causes micro-pauses of motion as the tape passes by the pinch-roller, and this leads to tapes being caught-up and destroyed - I speak from experience!! ;-) (I bought one from Amazon for only £15.00 just to try it out!). I never tried the Mini-USB output to a computer as there is SO much noise injected into the audio path from the motor when playing a tape, it would've just been pointless. If I wanted to digitise a tape, I'd just use one of my classic-era Hi-Fi cassette decks (Sony, Technics, JVC). I'm afraid these cheap little no-name 'walkman' type devices - all of them share the same mechanism (if you look at them in this video, and online) - is as rough and inexpensive as you can get..... if it doesn't eat your tape, then the sound quality is ruined by the electrical noise from the motor, and the bad wow-and-flutter/unstable tape speed playack! Cassettes can sound wonderful.... if you use decent, older players from the 80s and 90s/early 2000s from a good, well known brand; Technics, Sony, Yamaha, JVC, Denon, etc.
@TechieZeddie
@TechieZeddie 4 жыл бұрын
@@stevesstuff1450 Agreed. I also use cassette decks from 80s-90s to listen or digitize. It doesn't have to be an expensive high-end model, either. Mid-range decks from that era is so much better than what we have now.

Hi, Heygem, I have the second one that records directly to the computer. I have a Mac laptop. The audio port that does double-duty as the earphone out/microphone in, doesn't work for me, even though I'm making sure in "Audio Devices" that it's set to the microphone setting. It's still just recording the open air in the room through the laptop's mic. So, this means I have no option but to select the USB PnP Audio Device option and go through the USB port. The problem I'm encountering is that even though I am specifically selecting USB PnP Audio Device in Go>Utilities>Audio Midi Setup>Audio Devices on the laptop, but it doesn't REMAIN on there long enough to get through a whole song on the cassette tape. It inexplicably for no apparent reason de-seclects the external device and returns to the internal microphone selection right in the middle of the audio capture. Then Audacity sends me a message that says the capture was "unexpectedly interrupted." Yeah, I know why! The reason why is because I can actually SEE that it's just automatically switching from USB PnP Audio Device back to Internal Microphone. I even make sure that set the sample rate, bit-depth, and number of channels to the same as in Audacity, to no avail. Do you know how to prevent the laptop from leaving USP PnP Audio Device selection for no reason in the middle of a capture? This is happening every time I try it.
@heygem
@heygem 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, this seems to be an OSX issue, and I'm not very familiar with Mac. But if i'm to guess, do you think your Mac laptop went to sleep for a bit and when it woke up Audacity didn't detect the USB PnP immediately and switched back to the microphone? Or maybe you can try a different USB cable. Perhaps the cable is weak or faulty and occasionally drops signal and maybe the Mac stops associating audio input with USB PnP the moment it thinks no data is being transferred? Do you want to try a different cable? My guesses could all be off though. I think it would be easier to ask people familiar with Mac about this.

Hello. Is this for converting cassettes to audio files? I want to ask you because I bought an ezcap and a logilink and they had problem they made very much noise when I pushed play for first time even there was no cassette inside. And this noise was recorded to audacity. .The good thing is that I returned them back and I took my money back. I have old cassettes original from Greek artists that never have been released in compact disc, and they play with very crystal clear sound in an old walkman I own. But I can't connect old walkman with laptop.

As mentioned in the video and by others in the comments, it's not really high fidelity nor true stereo. But you get a decent enough copy. If you need to really digitize precious music, look to professional equipment. This is more of a cheap hobbyist novelty toy.

Hi, here are the help pages for the recording feature in Audacity: 1. manual.audacityteam.org/man/tutorial_selecting_your_recording_device.html 2. manual.audacityteam.org/man/tutorial_audacity_settings_for_recording.html . 3. manual.audacityteam.org/man/tutorial_recording_and_editing.html 4. After recording, you'll probably have to specify which folder to save them in. That's why you can't find them. This is the help page on exporting after recording: manual.audacityteam.org/man/file_menu_export.html

it may, but make sure to keep it steady. but it's not really a high fidelity device, just a novelty gadget for digitizing a few tapes. for heavy duty use, you're better off with a working secondhand tape player from a big brand like Sony then running an aux cable to your PC or some other digitizer.

I haven't used it since so I don't know if I'm remembering this right, but I don't recall either of these having built in speakers. so you'll have to use the earphone jack, you can plug in a 3.5mm aux cable to speakers if you want.
