This was a HUGELY important video. I have a 22yr old KORG T1. Floppies were the means to record tunes created on the KORG, but floppies deteriorate and I was lucky mine had been stored in a cool, dry place and still work. However, moving them FROM the KORG to my computer (iMAC) has been a nightmare, not to mention costly and time-consuming, only to fail at every turn. These simple devices allowed me to use the 1/4" jacks out of the KORG directly to EZCAP rather than the MIDI outs from the KORG to begin saving compositions nearly 50 years old which had been saved to the KORG on floopies. These is a considerable loss of quality, but the tunes are well-enough discernable that someone with a keen ear who does NOTATION is able to convert them to sheet music/scoring/arranging/orchestration. That's HUGE.

Excellent and informative video. I bought one of these to digitise an audio book on cassette. It worked fine but I went on to buy an 80s Sony Walkman I use the modern personal stereo as a backup. They work well as a Walkman type but on the bus the automatic transmission interfered terribly with the audio. What I ended up using to capture audio was a Sony TCM-939 cassette recorder and for music a Technics RS-B11W Stereo Dual Cassette Tape Deck. To capture audio from these I use the line in/ line out and a 'digitnow' capture cable, using audacity as you did. I don't like the trend of removing the headphone jack either.

Cassettes are the one thing that won't make a comeback, too much maintenance with tapes. I still use my cassette recorders at home and I have a small stash of high bias blank tapes I'm looking to use with computer software to make the "ultimate mix tape". Good video here, especially for a female who is as into the music as some of us geek guys are. I have one of those 'easy cassette' player devices I got as a Christmas gift but it never worked so it sits in my box of audio cables. These days, the best music players are your iPODS, MP3 players and phones, they just need to be charged frequently. And remember, KEEP THE VOLUME DOWN if you're listening on any type of headphone, you don't want to destroy your hearing. Thanks for letting me riff. :-)

Nice review. I noticed even the USB cable version with Audacity, it’s outputting in mono only. That’s sad because the tape heads look like 4 track stereo auto reverse heads. I see two capstans and pinch rollers. Are these auto reverse? I’m sure the audio qualities of these players aren’t that good. If you have an older higher quality Walkman device, that would probably sound better. If you have a laptop without a line in, you can always buy a USB device that will give you line in function (ADC). This method gives you stereo and would sound way better. BTW, when you record directly to the USB thumb drive, what bitrate is the MP3?
@heygem5 жыл бұрын
sorry, i don't remember what birate anymore. i'm quite busy now but maybe next month i'll test it again and check. it's been a year. no, no auto reverse. this is a very barebones player. correct. the build quality is quite shoddy. as i mentioned in the video and the comments here, this is meant for digitizing tapes you have no means of digitizing otherwise. not really for playing and enjoying cassettes you already have.

Hi or should I say hey, heygem! Nice review. I'm watching in 2022. You might be interested to learn that cassette sales have been going up continually for the past several years. (Not sure why, because cassette audio quality is worse than R-R, vinyl, CD, and minidisk. Only ancient 78RPM records are worse.) Anyway as I said, nice review. I would like to confirm that if you put in a stereo tape, the output recorded on the thumb drive is true stereo, not the two channels mixed together. Also I'm wondering (there probably is no answer) how you are supposed to set the correct recording level on the thumb drive version, since you can't see the waveform anywhere to be sure your levels are OK. Oh, some final thoughts... If a computer has only a mic input, then the line output on CD player etc. will be too loud and will distort. On new computers with the single mic/earphone jack, the mic input is MONO so you can not record stereo audio into your computer! Obviously the old PCs with separate line in jacks are better! Keep up the good work! Peace, out.
@heygem2 жыл бұрын
thanks for commenting. re: " would like to confirm that if you put in a stereo tape, the output recorded on the thumb drive is true stereo, not the two channels mixed together. " - no, it's just two channels mixed together. not true stereo like whatever sound is only for the left channel comes out only of the left. the result still comes out of two earphones, but they're mixed. "Also I'm wondering (there probably is no answer) how you are supposed to set the correct recording level on the thumb drive version, since you can't see the waveform anywhere to be sure your levels are OK. " - you only get to adjust the source I suppose. this is meant to be like a novelty toy, not really a serious audio recorder. "Obviously the old PCs with separate line in jacks are better!" - there's still two ports (line in that's blue and mic in that's green) on modern computers, but on desktops. I still have them even up to today, 2022. "n new computers with the single mic/earphone jack, the mic input is MONO so you can not record stereo audio into your computer! " this must be for laptops. in that case, you can get USB sound cards or USB audio interface devices.

Hi, Heygem, I have the second one that records directly to the computer. I have a Mac laptop. The audio port that does double-duty as the earphone out/microphone in, doesn't work for me, even though I'm making sure in "Audio Devices" that it's set to the microphone setting. It's still just recording the open air in the room through the laptop's mic. So, this means I have no option but to select the USB PnP Audio Device option and go through the USB port. The problem I'm encountering is that even though I am specifically selecting USB PnP Audio Device in Go>Utilities>Audio Midi Setup>Audio Devices on the laptop, but it doesn't REMAIN on there long enough to get through a whole song on the cassette tape. It inexplicably for no apparent reason de-seclects the external device and returns to the internal microphone selection right in the middle of the audio capture. Then Audacity sends me a message that says the capture was "unexpectedly interrupted." Yeah, I know why! The reason why is because I can actually SEE that it's just automatically switching from USB PnP Audio Device back to Internal Microphone. I even make sure that set the sample rate, bit-depth, and number of channels to the same as in Audacity, to no avail. Do you know how to prevent the laptop from leaving USP PnP Audio Device selection for no reason in the middle of a capture? This is happening every time I try it.
@heygem6 жыл бұрын
Hi, this seems to be an OSX issue, and I'm not very familiar with Mac. But if i'm to guess, do you think your Mac laptop went to sleep for a bit and when it woke up Audacity didn't detect the USB PnP immediately and switched back to the microphone? Or maybe you can try a different USB cable. Perhaps the cable is weak or faulty and occasionally drops signal and maybe the Mac stops associating audio input with USB PnP the moment it thinks no data is being transferred? Do you want to try a different cable? My guesses could all be off though. I think it would be easier to ask people familiar with Mac about this.

Thank you for this video. It highlights the pros and cons nicely. I bought the one that has the thumb drive output. I bought it for a blind friend so she can save her old cassettes of parties and events and mix tapes. She used her cassette recorder the way we use cameras to remember events. It was more difficult to use Audacity for her even though she is "high tech" and uses talking software for her computer. In this current time, she is able to teach her many music students using "Zoom", "face Time" , "Duo" etc. This was just a simpler solution for her. One point - if you use an "Aux" output to a laptop computer "Mic" input, you MUST reduce the aux input level to a microphone level using an "attenuator" which is like a volume control or you run the risk of damaging the sensitive mic input circuitry (worst case) or having bad distortion (best case) even with the sound source volume level turned down to minimum. If you don't know what I am referring to, just DON'T ever connect an "Aux" or "line out" directly to a "Mic" input with a back-to-back cable (mp3 to mp3). I have a degree in Electronics and have been working with sound systems since the 70's.
@heygem3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. My desktop has a direct line in input. Not to the microphone. Since the 3 years I made that video, there's also a lot of affordable decent USB sound cards for laptops with no dedicated line inputs too.

It's normal, like other Walkman style portable players. But if you use it to play back tapes often, I don't know if the cassette mechanism will hold up, as it's a cheap device. You may start to hear hisses. This wasn't meant for longevity or even constant playing. Just for quick digitization of tapes.

As mentioned in the video and by others in the comments, it's not really high fidelity nor true stereo. But you get a decent enough copy. If you need to really digitize precious music, look to professional equipment. This is more of a cheap hobbyist novelty toy.

@@heygem i just want to make a normal job but not to have noise like hiss, hum and buzz from the player. older walkmans have very clear sound without noise but there is no way to connect these to laptop in order to convert cassettes to mp3.

I need help. I want to buy one of those cassette to mp3 but I don’t want to use it for that feature I want to use it as a normal cassette player and record music off my phone into the built in aux port/ headphone jack that it comes with and record a mixtape onto a blank tape but I was wondering if you could tell me if that is possible or if it’s also possible by using a Walkman and hooking a aux cable to it into a line in on the computer if that can record my music onto the blank cassette.

you'll need to buy a cassette recorder.

Heygem, vary useful your videos, I am using the last demo, recording directly from the tape recorder to the computer, I downloaded Audacity and got up to listening the music in my computer, but I have been unable to find the tracks and playback them, I want to convert my cassettes to MP3 in my computer but it has been a headache, could you please give me some tips on how to do that. Carlos

Hi, here are the help pages for the recording feature in Audacity: 1. manual.audacityteam.org/man/tutorial_selecting_your_recording_device.html 2. manual.audacityteam.org/man/tutorial_audacity_settings_for_recording.html . 3. manual.audacityteam.org/man/tutorial_recording_and_editing.html 4. After recording, you'll probably have to specify which folder to save them in. That's why you can't find them. This is the help page on exporting after recording: manual.audacityteam.org/man/file_menu_export.html

to be safe, just keep it under 32GB, FAT32 formatted. it may not be able to read bigger drives.

For the first one you tested (to usb), have you tested the automatic feature? There's a way for it to automatically record each side and then switch over. I'm wondering if it will record a break between songs? Ie unique MP3 files per song or if it will do Side A of the tape on 1 mp3 file and then side B on 1 MP3 file. Would like the songs to be separate but want to make sure it will do that automatically and I don't have to stop/start recording between songs. Thanks!

auto mode does detect the silence in between songs and saves it into two discrete MP3 files. but it works best if it's a commercially recorded cassette. if your source is some homemade mix tape, sometimes the interval between tracks isn't long enough or truly silent enough for the converter to detect as a gap between songs. my units do not do auto reverse, so it won't be flipping over to side B on its own no matter what mode you use.
