As you might know, 2020 brought upon us a ton of Nintendo leaks and amongst these were new demo builds of Pokemon Gold and Silver as well as the source code for both games! Let's check out some of the highlights!
Hey guys, welcome to LOST BITS! Where I will cover unused and unseen things in various games! In this video we'll explore MORE unused content in the Pokemon Gen 2 games! The tanuki Pokémon with a burning backpack is a reference to the Japanese fairy tale "kachikachi yama" where a rabbit takes vengeance on a trickster tanuki but setting his backpack of sticks on fire.

I find the snippets of the team discussing the games very interesting. I think it's really nice that they had people talking about every bit of the game and looking to improve and going after a good game. For example, notice the "there are few hints to where the league is" message. This is possibly a very minor thing that only a few players would have trouble dealing with, and yet they were discussing it and looking into better ways of implementing the scenario. So much love and care poured into the game.

Yea, I'm guessing those were notes from playtesters (although in broken english). From what i can tell, the notes on the page at 17:10 say; 1: Its annoying how you have to go get your Pokemon again after a Bug Catching Contest. R: We'll try to make the game restore your party afterwards 2: No one actually tells the player where the Pokemon League is. R: We'll rework the story to fix this 3: I never encountered a "Shiny" Pokemon during my testing. How do i. R: Pokemon have a 1 in 10000 chance to be Shiny 4: The warehouse in "Kogane City"(not sure where they're referring to) seems like a pointless diversion, rather than advancing the story. R: We'll rework that too

Z Warrior Krillin Kogane City is Goldenrod. Maybe at that time the team rocket event wasn’t connected to the warehouse, and they got a point, that part felt bloated and slow.

I really wish the same care was put into newer games. I know, I know, I'm a salty ungrateful Pokemon fan, but the newer games don't feel like they have the same delicate care put into them. They feel more...manufactured, especially with the additions of Cool Epic Features like dynamaxing they added to sell the game.

Up to gen 6, Pokemon games actually felt alive, they had interesting content. Now all those little things that made the games feel alive are just thrown out the window! Anyway, rant's over. The "All work and no play" section of that last file is actually not Pokemon related. Older versions of the Claris Filemaker database software hid that in the file headers as an easter egg. "FileMaker files were stored in clear text prior to FileMaker 7 so, if you opened a FileMaker file in a text editor, you could see the phrase "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" in the header repeated over and over. No, it's not a virus! My understanding is the developers just needed to take up some space in the header and that's what they came up with. Today, modern FileMaker files are stored in Unicode so I'm not sure if the phrase is still there. -John Mark Osborne"

There's one romhack, called Pokémon Gold 97, based on the 1997 SpaceWorld Demo leak a while back, but as a full experience. This includes the beta type chart as a toggleable option (Dark weak to itself and Normal, Steel immune to Steel, etc.) Certainly interesting to see what could've been!

Also, that NOA employee was in no place to complain - whatsoever. NOA only had to concentrate on translating the game into one language, whereas NOE had to translate into multiple separate languages. Not to mention the fact that (especially at the time) NOA were a far larger, more unified division than NOE with way more presence and financial support within the company. The NOA employee just seems like they were being a prick, not considering the vastly different workloads and circumstances of the two teams' translation jobs.

It turns out Nintendo actually hasn't taken any content down, it's completely safe to talk about these leaks. The belief that Nintendo took things down came from a piece of vague information that was misinterpreted and spread around. All the content from these recent leaks is up on The Cutting Room Floor for anyone to look at, and the Spaceworld 99 demo talked about here is available to download.

Imakuni was part of the official pokemon band. Yes, pokemon had it's own musical liscenced band, and you can thank them for many amazing Japanese anime tracks, including one that was originally intended to be the final track of the pokemon anime when the first movie was supposed to end the anime for good. Heck, they even made a short before the movie in japan with an adult Misty talking with her child, and her child mentions how her dad loved battles, so they implied that Ash and Misty got married and had a baby girl.

3:44 - apperently that dog pokemon was suppose to be the pre-evolved form of growlithe. Similar to how Vulpix had a pre-evoloved form planned which had only 1 tail. it seems many unevolved pokemon in Gen 1 that were capable of evolving were planned to get pre-evolved stage before them but never did. I think this was make it so more pokemon evolution lines had 3 stages instead of just 2. Maybe to make evolution lines more consistent but i guess they scrapped the idea. Pikachu, Clefairy and jigglypuff were the unevolved ones who got pre evolved forms. Hitmons, Magmar, Jynx and Electabuzz didn't evolve but got pre-evolved forms.

Those strange documents about All Work and No Play might've been some sort of buffer file. From my understanding memory management was still very much manual so maybe they put in some temporary files that were approximately the size of finished files to make sure there was enough space. Could also be temporary text strings since as we know from other games the devs sometimes like to have fun with those (if no-one on the outside is going to see them then why not).

3:57 I don't think Arcanine would have got an evolution due to its stats. Arcanine had pretty high stats in Gen1, They didn't change stats, between Gens, they keep inital special stat value, put it on either sp.Atk or sp.def then added new value to the special stat that was empty. So giving Arcanine an evolved form would make the evolved form as strong a legendary or psudeo legendary stat wise. Arcanine ended up with 555 BST. That canine might be an alternate evolution for Growlithe similar to how Poliwhirl got Politoad. Maybe Growlithe was planned to evolve thru trade holding an item like poliwhirl.

1 year old comment but... If you look at Arcanine's beta sprites from this demo you'll see that he was different from how he ended up looking at the end. He had way shorter fur on the head and the tail and was considerably smaller from the rear view, potentially hinting that they were probably considering to retcon him into a middle evolution.

2y old comment BUT, I believe that's the original planned legendary for Silver. See, Lugia wasn't originally planned for the games but the devs liked Lugia so much after seeing it in Takeshi Shudo's second Pokemon movie they worked it into the games. If you look at early box art for Silver this very much looks like the thing on the cover

3:56 I don't think that Pokémon would be an evolution to Arcanine but rather just a single Pokémon that might of been a legendary since its based of a Shishi or Chinese lion dog in Chinese mythology

In Pokémon Legends: Arceus the regional variant of Growlithe and Arcanine do look like Shishi but they have a horn on top of their heads something that the Shishi doesn't have, and speaking of Arcanine its original beta sprite looked more horse like almost as a Qilin but with dog traits

W H Y do I like the beta soundtracks more than most of the originals? Like the simple Oak’s Lab slaps and fits the idea of going back to an old, familiar place, and the beta title theme SLAPS. Also!!! The fact that we can SEE the infamous compression code that Iwata wrote that saved these games is incredible. Not gonna lie. That soldier sprite is very interesting. I don't know why people aren't talking more about it. Unlike police officers that we can see and fight against at nighttime, soldiers aren't present anywhere in the game. Sure, Lt. Surge was a soldier, and Blaine's unused sprite showed him in a military outfit and saluting, but other than that, there is no military force anywhere in the Pokémon games. My theory for the unused soldier sprite is that, either somehow, someway, there was an army base in Johto (no clue how that would work out. How or why would the protagonist enter an army outpost/base is absolute bonkers IMO), or maybe, when Team Rocket captures the Goldenrod Radio Tower, both the police and the military are dispatched (seen as a terrorist act), so not only you have to fight against Rockets, but you also may have to fight against police officers and soldiers that might think you're a member of Team Rocket. The same idea could apply to the Lake of Rage incident, where the strange radiowaves making Pokémon go berserk could be seen as a terrorist act, then both the police and the military would try to raid on the Rocket's underground hideout. This is my only possible theory of seeing soldiers in a Pokémon game.
