In this video, I have explained the concept of pi back bonding in metal carbonyls. IR spectroscopy is used to characterize metal carbonyls. Back bonding in metal carbonyls greatly affects the stretching frequency. Higher the extent of back bonding lower the bond order of the carbonyls which decreases the carbonyl stretching frequency. Remember that back bonding increases metal carbon bond order and decreases carbon oxygen bond order in CO. Bond order is inversely proportional to the bond strength thus due to back bonding CO stretching frequency decreases while metal carbon stretching frequency increases.
