Hello, I am a child who is doing horse riding for some years and i have my own horse. I was thinking what discipline i should choose and i really love endurance and im training for it. Though i have a question, is there like an age limit for a person and when they could do an endurance race ride because i want to try and compete. (sorry if my English is bad im from Europe where we speak a different language)

Hi Elizabeta, The American Endurance Riders Conference, one of the main organizations which sanctions endurance rides (competitions) in the US has a number of rules regarding junior and young riders. The Tevis Cup has its own separate rules regarding junior riders, having sponsors who ride with them the full 100 miles. Organizers of the sport in the US are very enthusiastic and supportive of younger riders getting into the sport! International rides in countries outside of the US may have different rules and age cut offs so you will need to look into that depending on what country you are in! Junior riders in AERC events are those who are under age 16 at the start of the ride season for the year you are participating. I understand your concern for the horses, but the horse athletes that engage in the endurance sport are exceptionally trained and conditioned for the sport and are very well loved and cared for by their rider/partners. This is at least my opinion based on attendance and crewing at numerous endurance rides for the past 12 years!

Hello! Everyone who has trained a horse for any specific sport wonders if the horse enjoys what they are doing. If left completely to their own devices they probably would be happy with their herd out in the pasture. But they also seem to enjoy the attention from their rider/owner when we bring them in to have a lesson or a conditioning ride out on the trail. All of the Endurance riders I have met and been on a crew for, take meticulous care of their horses. They must be well trained, conditioned and fed in order to carry the rider any distance. During the ride event their are many vet checks where the horses are looked at and they must pass all of the vet check requirements before continuing on in the ride. Their care is of utmost importance! 😊🐴

Some horses love endurance rides, others not so much. To do a ride like this takes months of training/conditioning. Even the shorter 50 mile rides take a lot of miles in the saddle to condition both horse and rider. If the horse doesn't enjoy the work, the rider will know by the attitude and behavior of the horse, and in most cases, the horse will not be ridden in these rides. (As with any sport, there are always a few bad apples) I've never ridden in the Tevis, but I have done quite a few of the 50 mile rides in my younger years. My horses loved it. We were always asking our horses to slow down, not speed up. And yes, the horses are well cared for. They also have to pass veterinarian checks to even be allowed to start the ride, then must also pass additional checks along the route. If a vet finds the horse is lame or unfit to continue, they are not allowed to continue. There are mandatory breaks at the vet checks to allow the horse a chance to rest a bit, and to eat. The Tevis Cup is the most difficult ride--think if it as the Super Bowl of Endurance riding.

@@lynettepierce thanks so much for your thoughts! You are absolutely correct in that it takes years of conditioning and training for the endurance sport as is true for any other riding sport! Tevis Cup and AERC sanctioned rides require the horse to be a minimum of 6 years old to compete in the 100 mile distance. It’s great that you were able to do endurance rides with your horses! How exciting! 💜😊🐴
