Tex and his team at the Black Pants Legion have been bringing the BattleTech universe to life with their Tex Talks BattleTech series for over two years now. In this episode we dive behind the scenes to explore what goes into producing those episodes, muse on the story telling potential contained within the Inner Sphere (and beyond), and reflect on the talented artists that are helping to bring that universe to life.

I'd go with The Tripitz Affair as my favorite. If not for the insight into what a secret superpower with unfettered access to all interplanetary communication would be capable of, then for the fact that I simply had zero knowledge of this awesome slice of BattleTech lore going in.

I love the Urbie cos it's THE underdog mech. I like to imagine myself being a pilot of some fancy clan death machine. But in the setting realistically, most folks would probably have to scrape together c-bills for years and barely afford the beat to shit AK47 that is the Urbanmech for their merc adventures. And that's fun to imagine too.
@KageRyuu6
@KageRyuu6 3 жыл бұрын
Actually it's not, the little known Hornet is. Fuck the Wasp, the Stinger, and the Urbie, all infinitely more powerful and well known than the Hornet lol The only thing it excels at is being cheaper than the Urbanmech.
@theriveracis5172
@theriveracis5172 3 жыл бұрын
@@KageRyuu6 The difference is, the Hornet's armed with nothing. A single medium laser, a single small, and an LRM 5. The Hornet can't be relied on to do anything beyond maybe harass light combat vehicles. For a mild amount more, the Urbanmech gives you an AC10. A weapon that can reliably hurt just about anything on the battlefield. For defense, it's the best option you can really get. Especially since the AC10 is pretty much the best 3025 weapon system. Wasp and Stinger both have the same problem. No armament, effectively. You can safely ignore the both of them, most the time, as a single medium laser doesn't even threaten medium mechs in a significant capacity. Personally, if I had to go for a cheap mech, I'd go for the Flea. 1.5m C-Bills, and I got a 6/9 light with a large laser. No armor, but you have the range to avoid brawls, the speed to stay there, and enough firepower to go internal on similar weight mechs. Realistically, though, if I'm going for cheap, I'm getting tanks. If I'm just getting a medium laser mech, I might as well scrap that and get a gang of Savannah Masters. 91k. Or a lance of Scorpions, at 289k a pop, armed with a pair of mediums a piece and far more armor than any light offers. Or the SRM variant of the Goblin, for a solid medium tank armed with tripple SRM6, and enough armor to laugh at the medium laser.

I am playing Mechwarrior: Destiny (pen and paper) with two other guys and started to write something like a "captains log" after each session. Now our gm writes intermezzi with all important events happening in the meantime. By now we have accumulated about 50 pages of text. I gave a few pages to some guys, who are not familiar with Battletech, and they love it. All thanks to Tex and the boys, for giving us the inspiration to do something like that. I always loved Battletech, but it faded away through years, but now it shines brighter than ever before. And all of you guys are partly responsible for that. Thank you. a perfect outside threat would be that the Wars of Reaing were only the first round between the Socity and the warrior caste The Society wins the war and 70 years later they attack the inner sphere because a star in clan space went supernova in the clan home worlds are going to become uninhabitable. Clan level mechs with advanced control system and pilots that are literally just brains on a stunted body plugged into the mech backed up by hordes of drones. This would be a real invasion flying the flag of the SLDF

Re: the universe beyond canonical explored space, the lore for that has expanded enormously since the 80s. When the Clan stuff was first advertised way back when (in the days before internet leaks and the like) the local BT community was rife with speculation about them being aliens, not returning Star League descendants. Made sense at the time...but here we are in 2020 with the edge of the future timeline advanced far beyond anything imagined back then and still no xenos. Interesting the directions the game *hasn't* gone over the decades. Also, I have a weird craving for a footlong grilled cheese sandwich.

Just now listening to this. In relation to both of your interests in the 3051 and before era setting: I was playing 40k (and Battletech) in the early 90's and was picking my own brain recently what I now dislike about 40k, and it occurred to me that in the 90's and before that universe was this wide open time scale, 10k years of possibility, but that had stopped when they set the current time to 999 of the 41st millennium. The game lost all of its massive scope of time (not space) by announcing that the current date was standard. No one played "historical games" anymore, the current timeline was the focus. And the addition of a couple of major factions within a temporal 5% of the current date precluded playing any further back than that anyway. Battletech, while having a "current date", is kept alive by the fans, most of whom I think are more familiar with the years around and before the Clan invasion. This places the bulk of what people are playing in the lore's past, and the game remains a wide open historical drama, with untold millions of stories. There isn't a mass of current year products and support to fool newer players into ignoring the past, and the game is played over a vast amount of time. Anyone playing before the Clan invasion, in fact, can probably be playing within a 400 year span of the succession wars and not even know it, the mechs being so old.

In all the Tex Talks BattleTechs there's a common thread that keeps popping up. A force behind the scenes that kept the Great Houses at each other's throats for nearly 300 years, pulling strings, playing 5 sides (and the periphery powers, and even the Clans, too) against the middle, ham-stringing social and technological development, waiting for the chance to -take over- save the galaxy. I want the Tex Talks on Space AT&T. I want Tex to take on ComStar.

Hello there. At roughly the 40 minute mark, You and Tex mention a group leaving the Inner Sphere during the 2300's or 2400's and just Jumping and jumping until they find a 'paradise' world. Such a thing is totally possible, even though the game designers never mentioned it. Unlike the Exodus, the people doing this would be a small slice of the total of Humanity in Space at the time. So only a few Ethnic and Cultural groups would be part of this 'mini exodus'. It would only take a dozen or two of LARGE Jump Ships, able to dock upwards of a dozen or so Drop Ships to have a population base large enough to prevent 'inbreeding'. This does not include the persons leaving taking with them a Genetic Library and Gene-Bank. But with such a thing, you would easily have enough genetic material to prevent inbreeding of any kind. On top of all this, is the ability of the couple of hundred Drop Ships and the assorted Jump Ships to carry a significant amount of Cargo of all kinds. Not just food stuffs and medical materials, but working machinery with which to take any materials found and process them into devices needed, with enough time and energy devoted to such endeavors. Thus, even 'Engineering Casualties' aboard the Jump Ships would be repairable. Given enough time to collect the needed materials and fabricate the needed parts to successfully make such repairs. With 'Star League' like Data Bases aboard the ships, any star system found could be made to work as a new colony... even star systems without a habitable planet! Is a habitable world desirable? yes. Is it essential? NO. Let me elaborate: Your group has Jumped for decades, each Jump of 30 LY taking around 3 weeks to recharge the Jump Drives, so in say 60 years, you'd be 25,500 LY from the edge of the Inner Sphere. Probably less, due to having to 'lay up and make repairs' in some less than desirable star system. So, for argument's sake lets say 'only' 23,000 LY... or roughly EIGHT times the width of the Inner Sphere away from the Inner Sphere's boundary. Your group, having found no habitable planets, decides to settle in a resource rich solar system with plenty of Gas Giant Planets, tons of Moons, and several Asteroidal Belts. Now, find a good solid metal-rock asteroid. Stabilize it's rotation to a single axis of rotation. Bore out a fairly large tunnel through the asteroid from end to end. While you do this, send several Drop Ships out to the syatem's Kuiper Belt to obtain a large 'moon' sized chunk of mostly water ice and push that back into the system to end up near your asteroid. When ready, lop off chunks of ice and stuff the tunnel with them. Cap the ends with rock. Now, you turn dozens of very large mylar 'mirrors' to collect and focus sunlight onto the spinning asteroid. Eventually, and in relatively a short time you will 'melt' the asteroid from the outside in. The packed ice would melt, then vaporize, into a high pressure, high temperature steam that would 'balloon' the viscus rock and metal 'lava' like a large sausage shaped balloon. Turn away the mirrors and allow the asteroid to cool for awhile. At least until you can put mining equipment onto the surface of the hollowed asteroid (you might want to add reaction thrusters to the tops of the mining equipment to keep them in contact with the asteroids surface and not be flung away by centripetal force). Now you mine most of the metals from the exterior of the asteroid, since the spinning semi-molten object would have collected the heaviest elements to the outer surface, and the lighter elements to the hollow interior surface. Mining the interior is dead easy... drill a tunnel into the interior and install airlocks along the way to prevent the loss of the water from the interior, which has probably 'rained' down to the inner surface. Now you are getting Lithium, Aluminum, etc all the way up to the heaviest elements such as iron, platinum, uranium, etc. You mine your merry way until you have only a 'shell' of mostly rock left, which should still be several miles thick, and most likely several dozens of miles thick. Your ice body can produce oxygen and hydrogen... fuel for many devices and a source of 'air' and water. Your mining efforts have gained you billions of tons of usable materials to construct anything just about anything you desire on the inside surface of the ballooned asteroid. Now, given an asteroid that balloons up to 60 miles long and say 20 miles wide, you would have something like 31.5 x 60 miles, or 1,890 square miles of surface area to build your civilization upon (roughly 90% the size of Rhode Island). This would be easily enough space to put a LOT of people into.. especially considering you can build upwards from the shell towards the zero-G center and create truly stupendously tall buildings. A SINGLE building, 10 miles square and 5 miles tall, could house hundreds of thousands using only about 20% of the number of 'floors' available for habitation. The rest of the 'building' could be devoted to power generation, water treatment, waste recycling, storage, manufacturing, foundries, shops, parks, etc... with the highest floors devoted to low-G manufacturing and Medical 'retirement' for aged colonists. The interior could be lit by means of a long glass rod running from end to end of the tube of the cylinder, infused with billions and billions of chips of sapphire, ruby, emerald, and other materials to refract light and give 'sunlight' to the interior from mirrors reflecting sunlight to the ends of the rods. Day-Night cycles can be 'set' by using shades to block the 'eternal' sun-rod's light. And 1G gravity obtained by spinning the asteroid to simulate such an environment. Yes, all this to describe an O'Neal Cylinder. And given the size of the available area, several such buildings could be constructed to house everyone, with a very healthy growth margin. This leaves well over 1,000 square miles of area that can be devoted to agriculture to feed everyone and everything, and still leave space for truly huge parks and even artificial mountains and lakes. Oh, and time frame for all this??? With the kinds of tech available in the 2300's and 2400's, easily less than 15 to 20 years to 'build' and populate. Oh, and before I forget... one can easily 'stud' the exterior with more than enough weaponry of a size to deal with almost ANY object that gets too close. Planet? Who needs a Planet? One Cylinder? Why, when we can make as many as we can find appropriate asteroids to 'convert'? By the time the 'colonists' choose to return to the Sphere, they would have a humongous resource base, easily a population base to match any three Great Houses, and have Tech that would make the Clans look like they are spouting water and throwing pebbles! All of this gets even weirder if the 'colonists' leave about the time the first Mech is built (2439: Mackie), or shortly thereafter. Even taking 50 years or so to get out there, and a century to establish themselves, the 'colonists' would have, easily, 400 years of development time to build things that the Sphere and Clans could never envision.
