That first kill was the worst one in a lot of ways. Without any buildup from the soundtrack whatsoever, we're introduced to Leatherface in a brutal way. The death convulsions are extra disturbing because they're a new thing in horror cinema, from what I can recall. The soundtrack doesn't occur until the very wrong looking metal door is slammed shut after the deed is done, and just like that, we're shown a very understated yet realistic example of daylight horror. Chills for real.

Here is why the movie is so iconic. To many....it is the scariest movie of all time. But there is barely any blood. There is barely any visable violence. It is all about art direction and cinematography. Like....when the girl is put on the hook. You dont see the hook actually go in....nor does it come out her throat. You dont even see any blood. But the way they shot it....you feel her pain. The chainsaw is another example. Only 1 person gets killed by a chainsaw....and its really too dark to see. 2 people are killed by simply a hit on the head.

It's my favourite film, not just in horror I saw at maybe 10 years of age, and I'd never seen anything like it in any genre. The cinematography and ambient and ominous soundtrack set it apart. Barely any musical score as such, just unsettling sounds and images of death and decay set against the scorching Texas heat. It also did what pretty much no horror film had done before, and didn't following; it showed the killers in broad daylight. They weren't supernatural beings, just dusturbed men, clearly learning challenged who saw people like cattle. I don't even interperate Leatherface as being evil, he is a mentally challenged brute, who is abused and as hinted by the hitchhiker brother, just primed for butchering. That to me is what makes it such compelling horror.

The Leatherface actor was wearing a metal thigh plate for the stunt. When the chainsaw landed on his "thigh" it heated up the plate burning his thigh. Gunnar Hansen genuinely thought he was cut and screamed in terror and pain.

This movie also had a low budget, so the actor that plays Sally actually had to put dirty rags in her mouth it’s a lot of things that were used because of the low budget and also the actor playing leather face actually injured himself with the chainsaw

The cinematography and raw grittiness of this movie are what makes it so effective for a horror movie. Horror movies now try to give you a resolution and closing, this movie ends with the unknown element. It feels like being stuck in a nightmare. I personally think this is one of the greatest horror films ever made because it is so disturbing and visceral, I like the fact that you just sit there processing it when the credits roll. The psychology of Toby Hooper behind this movie is the parts that aren't shown make it more scary because your mind fills in the gaps of what's happening

If you ever get a chance to watch the documentary of this film then do not miss it. This movie was incredibly difficult to make., the budget was extremely cheap and some of the actors got injured along the way and in the end the mafia bought the rights to the film and never paid any of the actors. Nobody knows how much this film actually made in the end because of the Mafia owning it and keeping it a secrete. it is said that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre may be the most highest grossing film ever.

Marilyn Burns the actress who played Sally in the torture scene there at the last, told that it was extremely hot in that house during filming, and went on to say that Gunnar Hansen who played Leatherface really did slice her index finger,She also played in the Helter Skelter film about the Manson family as Susan Atkins.

I've always been a fan of horror. Ever since I was a kid. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (this 1974 version) has always been on my top 3 horror films list. The reason why I love it so much is because of how raw it is. It feels so authentic. The actors don't even seem like trained actors. They're actually nobodies. Some of the acting isn't the greatest (some dialogue scenes) and it works so perfectly because it seems real which I think is vital for a movie like this. I feel it's a movie that only works in the 70s.

Fun reaction & great commentary! I didn’t expect anything less from y’all tbh lol! I know y’all was talking about how dark it was at times & wanted to let y’all know it was shot like that intentionally. The filmmaker wanted you to feel as if you were there with them throughout the movie & if you were there, it would really be that hard to see out in the dark. I think it makes it more scary that you aren’t able to see everything clearly when they’re out in the darkness. Also, these characters had no real indication that they were in any danger until it was too late. They would’ve viewed the hitchhiker incident as completely separate since they had no indication he would be around. He technically wasn’t around until Sally was the only one left lol. The first 2 only went to the house because they needed gas & heard the generator, thinking that they could just buy some gas from the homeowner. Jerry went looking for them, like I assume most people would for their friends unless they knew for sure it would put them in danger. When he saw their blanket on the porch, he more than likely assumed they had been invited in. Sally & Franklin were really the only 2 in the group who might’ve had any worry because 3 of their friends had been gone for so long. From what I’ve heard, people in the 70’s & prior didn’t really have worries about falling victim to psychotic people who wished them harm & it was more common to be met by neighborly people. Sorry this comment was so long lol

The first 2 people had no business going in that house tho. If they would’ve left when no one answered the door, they all likely would’ve made it out of the situation alive smh. Him getting her with the broom was always upsetting lol but I explain it away for myself by saying she was just so exhausted from what had just happened that she couldn’t fight back

great reaction but, it makes me feel very old! Both Night of the living dead & Texas Chainsaw Massacre are super important in changing the landscape of modern horror without those two films the entire 80’s Horror boom may have never happened (The 70’s was a major shift in film) I highly recommend Phantasm, Dawn of the Dead & Thriller A Cruel Picture (influenced Kill Bill) a very underrated grindhouse flick! Texas Chainsaw was also one of those massive indie films that made record profits but, nobody involved with the film made a dime the film distributor used the film as a front for the mob to launder money

First time I saw TCSM (74) I didn't know what to make of it either. After repeated viewings, I've got to say that it's a grisly piece of art - a time capsule, if you will to a time when horror films left some of their northern European gothic roots and became fully westernized - leading into a bronze age of horror which will likely never be duplicated.

Agreed 100% ! Actually the original timeline ended with All American Massacre (SPOILER : Chop Top survived as the only one from the entire family, went on a killing spree, got caught and put in some prison/asylum and like 10 or something years later is being interviewed by a reporter researching the whole forgotten chainsaw killings case. Chop Top (whose real name is Robert, also called Bloody Bobby) basically tells the entire Sawyer backstory and most of the movie is told by flashbacks.) but yea since it never had a release, we’ll probably never really know.

Few things. Best reaction to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, mainly because you gave it the stamp of approval in saying the most disturbing thing you’ve ever seen. I grew up with this being the first movie I remember seeing at around 3 or so. Second, this movie is completely fictional. Only a couple minor details from Ed Gein’s life about trophies, furniture, and wearing masks and suits of human skin. Look at his family as Ed’s different traits. However, everything else is completely made up. Newt Texas isn’t even a real city. It was made up as the backdrop.

It's a good thing the 2003 remake didn't try to copy the hitchhiker scene from this movie no one could do a better job then the actor played the hitchhiker in this movie

70s horror films weren't gory or bloody, it was more of the 80s

I have to say yes the 70s horror does seem corny but, the vibe is yet still scary it like it happening real time new horror doesn’t have that from what I seen unless I miss some

Texas chainsaw massacre had 3 original sequels 1986 1991 1996 then early 2000s did the remake and its prequal then they did texas chainsaw 3D which was a sequal that took place after the first one then netflix put out leatherface the origin movie in 2019 ... Leatherface and his family were inspired by real life cannibal grave robber necrophile and serial killer Ed Gein
