Texas Children's Heart Surgery for Aortic Coarctation: Luke's story

Luke had been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect - coarctation of the aorta - through a fetal echocardiogram at 30 weeks gestation. Luke’s parents were comforted by the staff and experts at Texas Children’s Hospital for the months leading up to Luke’s birth.
After birth, Luke spent a few days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit being monitored closely. He was sent home after remaining stable and having a reassuring echocardiogram. At Luke's one-month follow-up appointment, Luke's parents learned the narrowing in Luke's aortic arch had worsened and it was time for surgery.
The heart surgery team at Texas Children's Hospital performed a surgery on Luke at two months old. Luke’s surgery was extremely successful, and his post-surgery scans showed he will need no further interventions. Luke is currently a very happy, healthy 7 month-old boy.

My sons CoArc wasn’t found until he was nearly 12months old, his surgery was at 16months. He also had a VSD repair. Today’s he’s a healthy 14yo teenager! We see our Cardiologist regularly, so far things seem stable 👍🏻

my mom knew for the full nine months and I was born at 37 weeks and I had a lot of problems at birth I was born with aortic stenosis sadly they didn’t find out until I was born I had heart surgery in April 2001 when I was 2 weeks old I got to go home for one day then they called my parents to tell them they have to rush me to the hospital. Thank goodness ever since then I have not needed another heart surgery and it’s been over 20 years since I got the surgery

I found out shortly after birth that my son has CoA. He is now 7 weeks old. Hia surgery is scheduled for this month. His dad and I are terrified. We are praying for a safe surgery. Hello I was a 14teen days baby when CoA was discovererd for me. Now I’m a 22 years old healthy college student. Decreasing the blood pressure is the challenge we CoA patients face over our lifetime !

@@GH56789 yes this is routine! I daily take Bisoprolol and Irbersatan for blood pressure . But otherwise i have no complaints

Ive had a coarctation that wasn’t seen until I was 12. I’m 23 and haven’t had to have any operations. My first child was born with Arsa and my second child 37 weeks now I was told after fetal echo, has a coarctation as well and will have to stay in the nicu and may need an operation. I’ve been scared out of my mind and it’s all I can think about. Please pray my baby isn’t gonna need any operations🙏

I had a coarctation repaired in 1962, I was one. Just quibbling over language: I don't have congenital heart disease, as a disease is acquired. I DO have a defect, however. I tell people I am defective, it's worth a laugh.
