What makes this film memorable is the way it captures life in rural Texas. Of course, since I have never actually /lived/ in rural Texas (or rural anywhere, for that matter) I can't really say that, but it certainly seems to.
An aging deputy, focused on enforcing the law as an absolute good, investigates a situation that just gets worse as it goes along. Worse in terms of justice, not in terms of the movie.
No real surprises, just deep satisfaction at watching a film well done!"

Great movie. Pulls you in very slowly. All characters played their roles to the peak. Very realistic scenes of what can and may have happened on farms for land grabs in small towns.

I grew up on a cotton farm in Tahoka, Texas. It was in the fifties to the seventies. I have picked many bales of cotton and holed many weeds 😊😊😊

Surprisingly good. A slow start, but stick with it. A great story, classic good vs evil, but fabulous atmosphere of small town america. Terrific acting. No SFX, crash, bang scenes or unnecessary profanity or sex. Just a simple story brilliantly told in great atmosphere. Terrific film.

Why didn't the mayor take the oath on the witness stand? Also, the defendant has to have a defense lawyer.( Spoiler alert) I had this movie figured out in the first 5 min when the Ableman husband said the mayor bought his land to give the family a fresh start. That was the clue.

You figured it out . Then the fun is finding out when the characters do- a standard mode of form- reverse of the actors knowing what they will do and the viewer having to find out at the end. I tragedies usually the audience knows first, for example. In watching a movie about the Alamo in San Antonio everyone know when the movie starts and still watches. It was not a mystery.
