Great video! I am in my 30’s now, as a kid I grew up hunting... we had leases in the hill country and close to the border near Laredo... As I got older playing football in the fall in high school and college ate up most of deer season so I was never really able to hunt as much as I had wanted... fast forward all these years, working a decent paying but terribly unrewarding corporate job lol... and the last year or so all I can think about is buying my own land... I realize your video is more about ranching, but I’ve been looking into ways to basically use your property to help pay for its self like timber sales, grazing contracts, charging for weekend hunts and maybe 1 or 2 hunters that pay a flat rate annually and share in operating labor and cost etc... wanted to see if you had any tips, opinions or any input you could share about that... Like how much land you would recommend having to be able to no disturb hunting but still be able to use designated parts of the property to off set costs... Or location (I live in the Dallas area)... really anything u can think of... i would appreciate any feedback... Thank you and I subscribed to your video so I’m looking forward to seeing. I’m English, I live about 1 hours drive north of London in the English countryside. I have somewhat of an OBSESSION with Texas. I love the music, the countryside and the people always seem brilliant. I could never work the land despite coming from farming background due to a load of metal work in my spine holding me together. I would love to just visit before things get too bad as my body is breaking down at a really young age, but if I could manage to get across in the next 2 to 3 years it would be the top of my bucket list and a dream come true. If I win the lottery soon, I will be in touch…I know my only issue would be that I would never want to leave.

I would say start cutting or clearing out property nearby if you’re good on a shredder or be a ranch hand till you pay off You could get paid to kill or trap hogs cause I’ve gotten paid $25 a hog n I’d rack close to $6k a day N with shredding or clearing out property like cutting trees or digging stuff out you’d get paid close to $100 an acre or you get paid $50 a tree

It's cheap for a reason. Not much grass, not much water so you need a lot of land to raise any cattle.

Wow great question! Obviously you see people successfully raising cattle and horses across most of the state. Sheep and or goats do well in most areas also. As far as exotics, it depends. Back when I was growing up, there was a big push for ostrich farms because of the demand for ostrich eggs and ostrich skin boots. However, when it comes to exotics, you should probably be more focused on what exotic and where.

Very few people raise emus in Texas anymore, that market fell out years ago, hair sheep, cattle and boer goats is where it's at. You can run more sheep/goats on a property than cattle, 10 sheep=1 cow

I’m 21 now livin in north Fort Worth. I’ve been around the ranching community for a while but was never able to get involved directly for a long period of time. I’ve done hand jobs for bi-weekly gigs here and there but I want to get the ball rollin. If you know any ranches in either the north or south DFW area looking for hands let me know. I’m hard working and worked as a mechanic for rental one who distributes construction/ agriculture equipment as well as basic knowledge of ranch work. Thank brother God bless!

Ryan, that's a great question, thank you! If I were in your shoes, I would start by getting a lease. The land cost is most significant and you can find people willing to allow you to use their land to help them with the tax benefits.

Great question! No it is not compulsory; that was a hypothetical scenario I used as an example. Ranches come in all shapes, sizes and locations depending on what you want to accomplish with the place. However, most counties require a certain minimum size for ag except tax status; generally 10 acres. Just give us a call if you want to do a Zoom call and go over specific areas and land uses. Well, it really comes down to how the carrying capacity of the place and how much you have to supplement. In this scenario, you were estimating the land would be able to supply most of what they needed. Obviously feed and hay and everything else has gone up significantly since we published.

If you are trying to buy your way in, it is very expensive. There is just no way around that fact. Most people don't buy a Ranch hoping to make a great return in cashflow. It has some great tax benefits, long term appreciation and an incredible lifestyle though.

It’s a terrible business. The return on investment is laughable. The reason people want to do it is lifestyle. They want to wear a cowboy hat and drive a pickup and feed their cows and breathe the country air. As long as you know that going in and you’re not delusional enough to think you’re going to make any money on the operations, you’ll be fine. Get yourself 10-40 acres as a home place and try to find some land close by to lease. Forget cows, just run feeders/stockers and maybe goats or hair sheep depending on where you’re at. If you get really good at it, you’ll make a little spending money and maybe convince the IRS that you’re a real business. If you’re decent at it, you won’t lose much more than you would in lots of other hobbies. Whatever you do, don’t quit your day job. Your dreams of becoming the next John Dutton are crazy. You can be rancher, you just can make your living being a rancher.
