Texas school district approves paddling as punishment

I am 52 years, old and I got five swats at Mesquite High School in Texas in 1986 and I still remember it. It still hurts after A grown man 250 pounds hit A 150 pound 16 year old kid with A wood paddle. I have no kids, but please stop this.

I am a Texas 2nd grade teacher, and I only believe in corporal punishment if the principal calls the mom and gets her permission. I don't believe in just immediately doing it without notifying any family member.

In India teacher will not call to home before punishment. They directly cane students with hard and flexible wooden cane. The normal count of licks in India is 5 .

Children aren't behaving worse because they aren't getting spanked, they are behaving worse because they aren't being parented. You can't fix lack of parenting with beatings, you have to fix it with parenting. A person shouldn't act properly because they are afraid of violence, they should act properly because they know better.

I recall receiving between 3 and 5 "swats" back when I was in school ,every teacher had a good size wooden paddle either on their desk or hanging within reach ,and they really got good at using them on us ..and sometimes depending on the circumstances the shame of being swatted with an audience viewing the whole ordeal was worse than the paddling itself ,sometimes lol !

I recall this violence also and if I met any of those that abused me and my classmates today I would spit right into their dirty faces because that is what they would deserve. This violence has no place in America schools today and this is only allowed in the backward rural places. Today it is entirely possible a student may take the weapon from the bully hitting them and assault them back--after all they are teaching violence.

todd a: Jail is exactly where these violent offenders should be for assault or battery. No ski mask or gloves is needed but maybe a dark alley might suffice. Thousands of victims of this violence feel just as I do and thankfully this crap ended in most of America long ago. We still have backward places however like Texas that believe in violence. People are pathetic nowadays. "Is child abuse next?" Come on man, this is no where near child abuse. Child abuse is needless abuse, but moderate spanking, when your kid misbehaves, is a viable form of discipline. If the kid is humiliated in front of the class, it'll change their attitude.

Sure but you don't know how teachers will abuse it how many weird teachers will do it for their own pleasure also u don't know what the children have going on at home school would be their only safe place from not getting abused by their *own* parents and that would be ruined if a teacher decided that what the kid was doing deserved a paddle despite it not being a situation where a child should get paddled, ew this is 2 yrs old

FAR too many parents are unwilling to discipline their children - or teach them proper respect for others. This means that their children are UNPREPARED for the REAL world - where bad behavior HAS unpleasant consequences. This is a measure, that should NEVER have been removed from our schools. There are times, when I think the parents need a good paddling, more than their misbehaven offspring.

I'm a Gen Z Class of 2017, and my school district in small town West Texas paddled. I was paddled a number of time's, and it was given by the Vice Principal/ Principal, and would be 3-5 pretty hard swat's. My head football coach & the asst-coach paddled, and they gave 4-6 really hard swat's that at minimum if you could hold back your eyes would be watering when walked out.

Public schools need much more reign to punish students. My school experience was a circus, because teachers could not punish students in any way that will actually change anything (it was no real punishment of any kind). HOWEVER, I do NOT agree with spanking. Just take away the phone, ipod, TV, toys and watch them beg for a spanking.

After getting paddled ,trust me behavior returned at least for that day .Not soon afterward I was back to misbehaving again and more swats ,etc .Effective yet only temporarily .

Why don't the kids just wear electric shock collar. The collar could be preprogramed. So if the child speaks when the teacher is talking or gets out of its seat, the collar will give a shock 😱 .

About a year or two ago, I read something somewhere about a rumor schools want to try waterboarding. Where a kid is made to lie down and water is poured over their face or covered with a wet towel, and it gives the sensation of drowning. Is this what weve now come to?!

I don't like it at all. That is not the school's job to discipline my child. I am not a teen mom and their are other ways to discipline your child, then allowing abuse at the schools. Wake up people ! Discipline your own child. The school's should have the student run a few laps or write lines or stand on the bench, time out, etc.

The bible says to spank. Kids today are rude and bad. Ive taught school for 3 years. Ive seen things going on with behaviour that deserve the board. If you do not paddle you are promoting future criminals and saying it is ok to be a nut and just do whatever you want to do without any consequences. Ive seen some parents that need the board. Lol.

There had better be regulations about exactly who does the paddling. I mean, imagine a little girl getting a few licks with the paddle by some man: especially one who's two or three times the girl's size. If I would've been a parent involved in such a situation, the teacher (or principal) that big would instantly be in prison in a heartbeat for having committed a crime like that. Paddling should only be same-gender: males paddling boys and females paddling girls. End of story!
