Texas woman hospitalized with infection after cosmetic procedure in Mexico

After receiving a full body cosmetic procedure in Matamoros, Mexico, a woman was hospitalized for fungal meningitis, a rare infection that targets the brain and spinal cord. Several other cases of the infection have been tied to clinics in Matamoros, including four Americans who died. NBC News’ Ellison Barber has more.

What does love of fitness have to do with plastic surgery. I would take that as exercising to stay healthy not changing your body. This girl is fighting for her life so just pray for her and her family. I wish people would just love what god gave you without all the plastic surgery that can take your life just like this mother who may never see her family again. The thing here is she should have thought about her children before going to Mexico to have plastic surgery where so many people have had complications leading to their death. Before having that nose job or whatever just be thankful for what you have and live to be old the way god made us.

When I was little I was always envious of my grandpa's eyes because they were lime green, and I used to ask him why I didn't come out with green eyes he told me that I should be glad that God gave me eyes to see at all. So women when you're out there thinking about going to get a procedure you should just be thankful for what you already have. You're beautiful just the way you are.

This fungal meningitis is BRUTAL, and it's rampant in these Mexico cosmetic procedures. I've seen multiple reports. The anesthesia protocol is very different than the US. I feel so bad for these poor families. Prayers that she makes it. Usually it's fatal.

Americans especially those born there, should be careful because you have lower immune systems. What maybe normal and successful procedures for some, might get a bad reaction or infection. For example, all the allergies most Americans have, such as peanut allergy, is not as common in other countries. If you want to get procedure done in other countries, you have to go to the best hospitals. You still will save some dollars considering the exchange rates. I'm sure Mexico has good hospitals and clinics. She just didn't went to one. As the report said, hoping to save a few thousand dollars. Again, just because it was recommended and others survived, doesn't mean it's the same especially with American immune system. As seen with what happened during the pandemic. Just be careful and don't follow the locals especially if you have allergies or unheard of/uncommon diseases in other countries. Fungus grows rapidly in bodies with weakened immune systems and bodies filled/used to antibiotics.

@Anna_ep Yes, Americans have weak immune systems and horrible diets, etc, but fungal meningitis is typically fatal in any country. The US doesn't allow an anesthesiologist to bring in their own medications. They must be procured from the hospital or surgical center. If I were to have trauma surgery, I'd choose the US any day of the week and twice on Sunday, but the rest of their general health care sucks because it's a racket.

If you look at other comments, there are people who did go to Mexico but they wrote that they researched and got into reputable hospital who wouldn't even allow them to leave until 10 days they are stable. Health care is actually good even in Third World countries, as long as you have the money but it's not as expensive as US. The prices there are really jacked up. But if Americans travel to save money, they really shouldn't skimp and go for the best and reputable ones. They can still save money because of the exchange rates so they really need to keep that in mind. Hopefully stories like this help others when making a decision and always take into consideration the American immune system. Thanks for your input. Take care!

There are many places where it’s safe, but they’re priced accordingly (I’ve had to get skin grafts 3 times now for burn scar contractures and the Board Certified plastic surgeons I saw were amazing, saved my life the first time and made my life easier to live the 2nd and 3rd time)…I couldn’t even drink anything because my chin was stuck to my chest from the scarring, I’m very very glad I chose to have the surgeries

The bigger problem is the US hospital that turned her away for it being a simple migraine. Had they bothered with asking more in depth questions it would have been a totally different outcome . I'd expect better from a first world country's healthcare.

I wouldn’t wish this on anybody but do they ever stop to think beforehand of what if it goes wrong and my kids are left without a mother. As a parent it’s what stops me ever wanting any cosmetic procedure. I’d rather be un-maimed and alive to enjoy my family than this awful outcome. Please, please, please if you’re traveling abroad for surgery have yours done in an actual hospital with around the clock supervision. My doctor wouldn’t even let me leave Mexico until 10 days after my surgery.

Glad you did your research. Americans especially those born there, should be careful because you have lower immune systems. What maybe normal and successful procedures for some, might get a bad reaction or infection. For example, all the allergies most Americans have, such as peanut allergy, is not as common in other countries. If you want to get procedure done in other countries, you have to go to the best hospitals. You still will save some dollars considering the exchange rates. I'm sure Mexico has good hospitals and clinics. She just didn't went to one. As the report said, hoping to save a few thousand dollars. Again, just because it was recommended and others survived, doesn't mean it's the same especially with American immune system. As seen with what happened during the pandemic. Just be careful and don't follow the locals especially if you have allergies or unheard of/uncommon diseases in other countries. Fungus grows rapidly in bodies with weakened immune systems and bodies filled/used to antibiotics.

@@Anna_ep Could also be because doctors are quick to prescribe antibiotics for everything which is not a common practice in Latin America. I grew up in El Salvador and we only went to the doctor for emergencies such as the time I got appendicitis and a head injury (not at the same time). Whenever we got a stomach bug, a cold or a scrape/cut we used over the counter and herbal remedies. When I got chicken pox and measles it was also treated at home since it was also a common occurrence down there.

@@V.E.R.O. It's actually also because they get vaccines for everything and yearly. They get several vaccines yearly for flu and others. They also get a lot before they travel. Unlike most countries and maybe even yours, I'm sure when you get the flu you just let it run its course. Stay at home and get some headache or fever medicines or none at all. That's how it is here in Asia so we have stronger immune systems. It's also their food because they mostly eat processed and fast food. Whenever I'm in the US, I always get fat really fast within 1 week. I usually gain 5-10 kilos (11-22 pounds) that fast within a week.

I got my entire teeth 🦷 fixed and they where very professional and it was half the price. People just need to do research. I’m not going to a border town for surgery that’s for sure. People just need to research and find the best of the best. I’m getting some surgery done in a couple months and I have been researching the places in NYC that are the best and close to my home. I’m not going to travel to a different country for that and definitely not going to Florida

its crazy to see this because not only does she have the same name as me but we both got a cosmetic procedure done this year however my surgery was in April this year and was done in CT unites states.
