I remember this day well. My husband and I lived 15 mins away. We drove through right after it hit. Absolutely horrible.

*I will never forget the day...* I just left work to get home to be with my wife and two children, as they said the tornado was coming right on path towards our home. We huddled together in our basement bath tub...the three of them were in it, and I laid over it to protect them of debris. As we can hear the tornado getting closer, we can hear it begin to run the roof of our home off. We think we are safe in the basement, then I see it rip the 2nd floor off. I’m looking up into the eye of it at this point.... It rips me out of the tub and I get sucked 100+ feet in the air, spinning at 200mph. As the Bible said: Jesus will always protect us.... so as I’m spinning, I said a prayer, and Jesus himself came and grabbed me, and we went flying together. Jesus said to me: It’ll all be over soon, so enjoy it, and pretend it’s a water park ride. So I did... me and Jesus were holding hands and spinning in circles during the massive twister. Then, Jesus said to me: Alright dude that was fun, but I gotta let you go back to home... so he threw me towards my home.... I am doing back flips all the way there, until I land perfectly on my feet on a floating piece of wood.... I surf throughout the remainder of the tornado, then it died down and I was home. This tornado took our home, our cars, our entire neighborhood, and several others. Changed our lives forever, but thankfully so many people were able to take shelter in their basements. Our small town of Washington looked like a war zone after this. The bright side was how so many people came together to help.

I am from Mt. Vernon seen plenty of tornadoes in Southern Illinois. On February 19, 1888, a tornado cut a path a half mile wide through Mt. Vernon, killing 37 people and destroying more than 450 houses. The Jefferson County Courthouse was destroyed. This event was one of the first disasters to which the American Red Cross responded. Clara Barton herself directed the relief efforts.

My wife and I passed the golf course about 4 minutes before it touched down. We were heading to the square up town. We had no idea it was on the ground until I saw the black mass and heard the tornado eating. After it was over we went to help victims. I will never forget what it did to our town. Our house was untouched and about 6 blocks from the tornado.

Ive seen and been in a couple Tornadoes myself, and this Tornado is by far the scariest i have seen. You can look back at Moore and Joplin, and look at those Tornadoes in Aww to see the the raw power of mother nature. But this Tornado is different. You can look at it, and it's stares right back at in the eye with a purpose. It's the image you see every time you close your eyes!

I remember the day of this storm. I was 10 years old. Don’t live in Washington but my aunt does. The tornado stole the fence in her backyard, but otherwise she was much luckier than the rest of the neighborhood.

I was Almost 4 years old when this happened I was in Dolton Illinois at the time and there was this EF-2 Tornado(Manhattan to Frankfort) it had 125 Mph winds I don’t what happened because I was almost 4 but It was a Scary ass day

This footage is truly awesome. I was in my basement when this monster took our house and everything in it. This video is the only way I know exacty what the tornado looked like. On the 11th anniversary, I look at this and marvel at the fact that my family and I survived. Angels were with us for sure.

I now live in Omaha, NE, but when I heard about this destructive storm I was at the airport in Phoenix, AZ heading back home after attending a cousin's wedding.

I was only a literal child when this happened and all that really happened was my great grandparents house getting hit and the tornado taking the deck, garage, and roof I lived only about a few miles away in the Robein / East Peoria Area

I don't remember much about this day because at the time I was only four but living in Peoria at the time this was in the talks for years afterwards when someone mentioned tornado around here it was like yeah I remember the Washington one personally I don't remember much about it considering I was four but I hope that gives my perspective on the story very big rest in peace to all the people who lost their lives to the storm Washington was affected very hard and is still rebuilding from the storm to this day

I remember this day even though I was only 8. The pictures of the event flooded in weeks afterwards. I never saw the actual damage but would drive through a couple months after and just law rows of basement-less houses. Although I wasn't affected, my aunt and uncle's house was completely destroyed in it

My uncle Jim and aunt Betty lived on School street at the bend where the power tower is. Two doors down from them there was a house at 1517 School street that got swept away with this storm. The couple that lived there were having some sort of carpet work done by another guy. When they realized the weather was threatening the wife and carpet guy ran into the basement. The husband didn’t make it down the stairs in time. After the storm passed my cousin Karen came out of my aunt and uncles house to assess any damage. The wife that lived at 1517 was looking frantically for her husband. They found his body in a tree several hundred feet away
