What I’m hoping is that the fact that the Tacoma won’t “boogie” like the ford or chevy reflects the typical conservative Toyota design philosophy, and this engine will last 300k miles.

TFL actually broke the ADD (automatic differential disconnect). Toyota replaced the entire differential to investigate what happened. The only other problem I’ve seen online is the radiator shutter failing which seems to me to be an unnecessary component. See Car Care Nut review of the Tacoma. It’s a very thorough assessment from a mechanics point of view! This guy knows his 💩!

I know you are doing what you can and it is nice you went over all the body and interior details. All I hear about the engine and trans is "mileage" from pretty much every press reviewer. I want to hear about rock crawling, serious off roading, towing max tow range on hills and all these things done frequently for close to a year. Most testers sound like they gave it the soccer mom test. Everyone seems scared to treat this like a Toyota 4X4 to predict long term reliability. Once again thanks for your efforts.

Sorry for any confusion, in our line of business long term is what you would call a test vehicle that we have purchased to have long term, to really get to know them, and provide an ownership experience for viewers. Most of the vehicles you see on KZbin are from a local dealer or from a manufacturers press fleet. Dealer loans usually take place on the actual lot, or are loaned for a few hours to film. Manufacturer press fleet loans are a week give or take. Anything longer than that is considered a long term tester that is owned by the media outlet or in rare cases is loaned from the press fleet for long term feedback. Thanks for watching.

Idk how you are getting such bad mileage. LMAO. Even before tuning my 23 Tacoma I was getting 18-20 in town depending on how many redlights I hit. I am getting 24 consistent on the interstate now with Overland Torque tune. I am outperforming the 24. I have more HP with the tune than the 24 now to. One thing I can tell you is massive offroad tires, tons of bolt on mods, and shitty low quality gas will kill your mpg. Top tier fuel makes a difference. Not high octane fuel but Top Tier fuel. I guarantee you throw 33-35" all terrain/mud tires on the 24 and start adding light bars and shit the mpg is going to go to crap. Not to mention other channels have shown the new 8 speed trans runs hotter with larger tires.

I rented one for 6 days, engine sounds like a small tractor engine but did have plenty of power for everything I did including hauling a load of firewood. With firewood loaded even with the bed it seemed to bottom out the suspension on every small bump. Gas tank seems small, fill up netted 290-300 mile range @ 21 mpg avg, shocking coming from a F150 with 700 mile range. I don’t like the large blind spot at 1-2:00 in the windshield for a tall guy. Overall I liked it with some negatives that I could get over, I can’t get over the price so will probably never own one.
