Travel to Yoko Sekita's rich interior world. Interviewed by Naomi Ichikawa, Sekita showcases complex imagined and autobiographical scenes. Images from Japanese culture, Sekita's travels, and children's literature are hidden in the details of her work. The interview is a treasure hunt through these stories, told from the perspective of a former manga artist.
This video aired previously as part of SAQA's 2023 Art in Place conference.

Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt: "a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure."
Founded in 1989 by an initial group of 50 artists, SAQA now has over 4,000 members: artists, teachers, collectors, gallery owners, museum curators, and corporate sponsors. With access to our museum-quality exhibition program, SAQA members challenge the boundaries of art and change perceptions about contemporary fiber art.
As a part of SAQA’s dynamic creative community, members can take their artwork and career to the next level. We offer a wide range of exclusive resources, mentorship programs, and professional opportunities.
In addition, SAQA documents the art quilt movement - our publications include full-color exhibition catalogs, the Art Quilt Quarterly magazine, and books like Art Quilts Unfolding: 50 Years of Innovation, and the Exploring Art Quilts with SAQA series.

Wow!!! So much complex work.... lovely, mostly surprisingly not typically minimalist Japanese. Quite fascinating is her rich fantasy life, she's like a little fairy person with her head full of fairy stories... such fun!

Amazing works of Art. Love the one that included Little Red Riding Hood holding the wolf, Harry Potter, Charley Chaplin, Sherlock, and Watson. Such detailed work, yet fun and humorous.

Such wonderful imagery and beautifully hand stitched pieces! This video really inspired me and sparked my own imagination for future quilts! I could just sit and look at them for hours.
